4 term one 2009 TERM Safe Ministry Training $5 Sunday 1 February, 1pm to 4pm (2:30-4pm for those who have undertaken the old Child Protection training) Led by Jana Koulouris at St James Carlton. Working with children is an enormous privilege that can be a wonderful experience for all involved. But the privilege carries with it significant responsibilities in terms of adequate care and protection. This course deals with those practical issues concerning children s ministry and child protection. (Everyone involved in children s and youth ministry must attend this course every three years.) Where to Lord? Four sessions over either four Sundays or four Mondays: Sunday 15, 22 February, 1 & 8 March 3pm to 4:30pm OR Monday 16, 23 February, 2 & 9 March 7:45pm to 9:15pm Led by Simon Roberts at St James Carlton. $8 (for workbook) Guidance can be one of the most frustrating issues for Christians. We know that Jesus has died, and that heaven lies in the future, but still remain unsure about everything in between. We have many questions about guidance, such as: Am I missing out on God s personal guidance? How does God guide his people today? If God speaks, will I hear his voice? How do I know God s will for my life? These are important questions, and many Christians grapple with them. This course will chart a way through these often confusing issues, and shows how for those who have ears to hear, God is still speaking loud and clear through his Son. 6 From Creation to New Creation (PTC Introduction to the Bible) Over 10 Sunday s from 1 March, 3pm to 4:15pm. Around one million Australian adults and 100,000 young people live with depression each year. On average, one in five people will experience depression in their lifetime one in four females and one in six males. On top of this, many more will be so affected by anxious feelings that it affects their everyday lives. These two sessions will introduce you to this very important topic. You will hear from people who have dealt with these issues first hand and be challenged and equipped to more positively support those suffering depression and anxiety. Don t miss these very important evenings! The Christian and Abortion Monday 7 September, 8pm to 9:30pm at Earlwood Anglican Community Church. This seminar explores the medical and theological intricacies of what abortion is and how Christians can interact with current positions on the debate. The Christian and Suffering Monday 21 September, 8pm to 9:30pm at St James Carlton. Suffering is part of every day life for so many people. It can crush people and drive them to despair. And it can strengthen people and grow their trust in God. Why does God allow suffering? Where does it fit into his plan? What encouragement does the Bible offer to those who are experiencing severe difficulties? This session will explore these issues and more term three 10 11
7 term four 2009 TERM The How and Why of Love (An introduction to evangelical ethics) $27 (for the book) Five sessions over either five Sundays or five Mondays: Sunday 8, 15, 22, 29 November & 6 December, 3pm to 4:30pm OR Monday 9, 16, 23, 30 November & 7 December, 7:45pm to 9:15pm Led by Simon Roberts at St James Carlton. Is abortion ever right? Can divorced Christians remarry? What about euthanasia? In a whole range of issues, Christians search for the biblical answer. But ethics is about far more than controversial issues and hard cases. It s about how we apply the teaching of the Bible to our lives each day as we wait for Christ s return; it s about our actions and our motives; it s about our character. In this stimulating and much-needed book, Michael Hill introduces us to an evangelical approach to ethics. Starting from creation, and taking us through the whole of biblical theology, the author develops a simple and yet comprehensive model of gospelbased ethics. In so doing, he provides us not just with solutions to difficult cases, but with an ethical framework we can bring to every aspect of our lives. In this course you will read Michael s book, discuss the ideas found in it and have the opportunity to think through some hard topics for yourself. Don t miss this opportunity to equip yourself to not only know what the Bible says about some important topics, but be better able to explain your opinion to non-christian family and friends. Creeds, Councils and Controversies (PTC Early Church History) Over four sessions on 6, 13, 20 & 27 January 2010, 7:45pm to 9:15pm. 9 Pick some courses. Mark the dates in your diary. Come along and have a great time learning with others. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
