3 Welcome to the Resource Guide T he Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center proudly presents its third Resource Guide* for family caregivers residing in Los Angeles County. We hope you find this Resource Guide useful and refer to it often. The mission of the Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center is to help families and communities master the challenges of caring for persons with brain impairing conditions, such Alzheimer s disease and other dementias, stroke, Parkinson s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Huntington s disease, brain tumor and traumatic brain injury. We have been working with caregivers and professionals in the community for over 22 years. Many things have changed in that time. While we have more services in Los Angeles County to meet the needs of caregivers, knowing where to look for them is still a challenge. Our Resource Guide is designed to give caregivers, their families, and interested others with a valuable resource that will provide information and support. It is a reference tool that you can visit again and again as your needs change. It includes information for those who are new at caregiving as well as cargivers who are facing end-of-life issues. In addition to our Resource Guide, the Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center offers a wealth of support and services that are listed in this guide. So please keep this guide and be sure to call us for another one to share with family and friends. You are not alone. The Los Angeles Caregiver Resource Center is here to guide you. *Listings in this guide in no way represent endorsement of the agencies by LACRC, Department of Mental Health or the University of Southern California. Listing information for services may have changed since the time of printing. We are not responsible for these changes, but we would appreciate any updated information for our next reprinting. 4 A 5 Self-Care Tips for Caregivers* By Donna Benton, Ph.D re you helping a family member or friend who has physical and/or mental limitations? Maybe you help prepare meals, do grocery- shopping, manage medications or help someone get to doctor s visits. If you do any of these activities, then you are a caregiver. Informal caregivers (unpaid family or friends of seriously ill loved ones) provide more care in the home than the federal government provides in all settings combined. If you feel alone, then you may be surprised to learn that 44.4 million Americans aged 18 or older are providing unpaid care to an adult (National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP 2004). For caregivers, providing help is just what family/friends do for each other. However, it is normal to occasionally feel stretched thin by the demands of giving care, balancing work and social obligations, and taking care of yourself. Here are 5 tips to help you re-energize: 1.) Get Support Support and coping comes in many forms: prayer, talking to family, friends or professionals. Try a support group. 2.) Set limits Answer yes to the question, Is there anything you need? Yes, I need a meal, I need someone to stay here so I can go out, I need some time by myself. Say no to requests that are draining rather than nurturing. You can still make choices about your life. 3.) Mind your health Worried about who will care for your loved one if you can t? Worrying doesn t help. Taking better care of your health does help. Check up on those little concerns about your health. Exercise. It gives you a break, combats depression and helps you maintain health. 4.) Look for Humor Start a humor file and keep it around. Save cartoons, funny sayings and books. If you find yourself laughing at something, try to find a way to preserve that moment. Find people to laugh with or situations to laugh at daily. It refreshes the soul and renews your spirit. 5.) Take breaks Also known as respite. Take mini-vacations in your bath-tub, in your garden, on your sofa, in your mind (meditation), or in your neighborhood (go fun shopping, movie or walk). Take a long-vacation for a few days. Without breaks, you begin to question yourself, feel inadequate and experience burn out. With breaks, you can feel renewed, refreshed, and relaxed. *Adapted from A Guide to Taking Care of Yourself Family Caregiver Alliance, National Center on Aging, 4
