Smith is set to take on the Tigers of Edward Waters College inside Chris Gilman Stadium for the 6th Annual Ralph J. Bunche Classic in Kinglands, GA. The Golden Bulls are attempting to bounce back from a loss at home versus the defending CIAA Eastern Division champs, Elizabeth City State University. Meanwhile, Edward Waters allowed Brevard College to score early and often in their season opener in Jacksonville, FL as Brevard won at Earl Kitching Stadium, The Tigers defense allowed an astonishing 398 rushing yards, 17 rushing first downs, and gave up touchdowns in six red zone situations. With most teams struggling early in the CIAA, JCSU needs this victory to snap their winless start and to keep their chances alive for CIAA Championship contention. THE SERIES: Johnson C. Smith comes into this match-up with a three game winning streak in the series. These two teams last met on September 13, 2008 inside the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, NC. The Golden Bulls picked up their first win of the season over Edward Waters in overtime. This is Steven Aycock s first time facing the Tigers as head coach at JCSU. Aycock was apart of the coaching staff at J.C. Smith that beat EWC 24-0 during the 2007 season in Charlotte, NC. The Golden Bulls were also victorious against Edward Waters in the 2006 HBCU Classic held in Greenville, SC CIAA STANDINGS Eastern Division Conf. Ovr. After scouring the nation and interviewing several applicants, the administration decided to hire one of their own and someone who has been with the program since its rebirth in That person was Kevin J. During his senior campaign at Denbigh, he held the District High School record for interceptions in a single contest with four. After graduating high school, Clark continued his educational and athletic career at Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia. Clark was a four-year letterman for the Spartans as a free safety and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education with a minor in Elementary Education. Following his years at NSU, Coach Clark embarked on a career in the United States Army where he served with the First Armored Division I-135 Armor Tank Battalion based in Nuremberg, Germany during Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in During the Gulf War, he received the Liberation of Kuwait Medal for Combat. 9 2009 JCSU Football Weekly Recaps GOLDEN BULLS HANDED A BIG LOSS BY ESCU VIKINGS AT HOME GOLDEN BULLS LOSE SHOOTOUT TO WV TECH IN SEASON OPENER September 5, 2009 (Week 2) Charlotte, NC The Johnson C. Smith University football team suffered their first loss at home to Elizabeth City State University Saturday evening inside the Irwin Belk Complex. JCSU drops to 0-2 overall, while the Vikings improve to 1-1; the results do not count towards either team conference record. On the first play from scrimmage, junior quarterback Ryan Carter completed a 14 yard pass to junior receiver Jeremy Franklin. Unfortunately, Franklin fumbled the ball and ECSU recovered at the JCSU 48 yard line. The game was mostly downhill from there for the Golden Bulls. The Vikings scored 21 uncontested points in the first quarter. JCSU scored their first and only touchdown in the second quarter off a two yard burst into the end zone by sophomore running back Archie Barrow. The touchdown completed a six play, 45 yard drive. ECSU responded in the quarter with a 53 yard punt return for a touchdown by Reggie Smith. J.C. Smith trailed 28-7 at halftime. Elizabeth City tacked on another touchdown in the third with a 27 yard pass connection from Creven Powell to Smith. The Golden Bulls scored their last points at the beginning of the fourth with a 38 yard field goal from junior place kicker Julius Wright. ECSU scored 16 points in the fourth to account for the final. Carter completed 19 passes out of 30 attempts for 159 yards with two interceptions. Franklin had nine catches for 94 yards and junior safety Lawyer Montgomery had nine tackles (7 solo, 2 assisted). Powell had 259 yards on 14-of-23 passing for three touchdowns. Cedric Blacknall rushed for 74 yards on 12 carries. Smith hauled in 82 yards and two touchdown receptions, while Dexter Manley had one catch for 57 yards and a TD. The Golden Bulls were 4-of-14 on third down conversions and produced 264 yards of total offense. Week 2 CIAA Conference Scoreboard BOWIE STATE 23 SHEPHERD 21 FAYETTEVILLE ST. 20 CATAWBA 21 ELIZ. Smith University football team fell to West Virginia Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon on a wet Martin Field. The Golden Bears, who compete in the NAIA Mid-South Conference, improve to 1-0 in their season debut; while JCSU starts off 0-1. Both teams got right to work in the first half. WV Tech struck first on their opening drive. Michael Scott completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Rashard Gould for the game s initial points. The point after attempt gave the Golden Bears a 7-0 lead and capped off a five play, 73-yard drive that lasted just 38 seconds. JCSU wasted no time responding. After a 34-yard kick return by senior receiver Kenny Strickland, the Golden Bulls only needed one play to score. Freshman tailback Dedrick Anderson sprinted 50 yards up the right side into the end zone. Junior place kicker Julius Wright tied the game with the PAT. The Golden Bears went three and out on their next two offensive series. JCSU put together a 10 play, 55-yard drive with their next possession that resulted in a 24-yard field goal. The score gave J.C. Smith a 10-7 lead with 2:11 remaining in the first quarter. WV Tech really struggled on their next drive. Freshman defensive end Travis Williams sacked the quarterback for a loss of four on first down, followed by an incomplete pass, and then an interception by junior safety Lawyer Montgomery on third down. The first quarter came to a close with the Golden Bulls ahead However, the Golden Bears recaptured the lead and went up halfway through the second quarter. Scott scrambled for a seven yard touchdown to complete an 11-play, 70-yard drive. On their next possession, Scott connected with JuJuan Smith for a 46-yard touchdown pass. Junior quarterback Ryan Carter helped the Golden Bulls bounced back with a three yard touchdown run to narrow WV Tech s advantage Scott retaliated in nine plays for WV Tech with a touchdown strike to Gary Joshway to take a lead. The score would remain the same heading into the locker room at halftime. JCSU got back on top with two touchdowns in the third. Anderson broke another 50+ yard run (52) to set Carter up for a nine yard touchdown dash with 13:48 remaining. The Golden Bulls second TD of the quarter came when Carter found sophomore receiver Rico Poole in the left corner of the end zone to take a lead with four minutes left in the third. Just before the third period drew to a close and with a steady rainfall, Carter fumbled on a scramble. WV Tech linebacker John Hellsoe recovered the ball and took it in for a touchdown to regain the lead. The Golden Bears converted on a two-point conversion to go ahead JCSU started the fourth quarter with the ball. However, the offense sputtered and turned the ball over on downs. Scott and Smith connected twice for 59 yards, a touchdown, and a advantage over JCSU. Both schools scored an additional touchdown to account for the final. This was definitely an offensive explosion by both schools. The Golden Bulls produced 479 yards of total offense (337 rushing, 142 passing). Anderson rushed for a game-high 167 yards on 20 carries with one touchdown. Carter scored three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing), threw for 100 yards and rushed for 90. Poole was the leading receiver for the Golden Bulls with five catches for 43 yards and two TDs. Montgomery was everywhere on the field defensively for JCSU. He had a team-high 11 tackles, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. Unfortunately, the defense allowed 447 total yards and WV Tech s Michael Scott passed for 357 yards and five touchdowns.
