I encourage every student and parent to embrace the opportunity to make this a great school year! Teachers and administrators have been busy over the summer preparing for the school year. Teachers and administrators have participated in professional development to improve the instructional opportunities for students. This year teachers and principals will be working on refining assessments, continuing work on aligning instruction to standards, and improving communication of what students are learning to students and parents. Our #1 goal is to improve student learning. So, regardless of where your student begins the year, we want to help them in advancing their critical thinking, knowledge, skills, and ability to problem solve. If at any time you have a question about what is occurring in your student s class, please contact your student s teacher. We all need to work together to benefit our students. Custodians and maintenance staff have been busy cleaning and preparing the buildings and grounds for the return of students. This summer, work was done to each gym floor and on our AC units throughout the district. In addition, some drainage work was done on school property. All of this work was paid for by the 1% tax that the district receives. As many of you know, Warrensburg-Latham CUSD #11 abates 75% of the 1% sales tax back to taxpayers. If you see a member of our custodial or maintenance staff, take a moment to thank them for keeping our facilities in such great shape. This school year WLHS will implement a 1:1 initiative for all high school students. During the school year, freshman students and teachers participated in a pilot. Teachers have been learning about, and will continue to learn, best practices in implementing technology into the classroom. Schools are preparing students for a workforce in which they will have different jobs by age 40. Many of these jobs do not even exist yet. Our students are heading into a workforce where the skills of listening, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration with co-workers located around the world will be essential to compete in an ever increasingly global economy. In addition, the amount of technical information in the world continues to grow at a rapid 1

2 pace. Integration of technology into schools is an essential and inevitable part of today s society. Students must learn and master how to access information, synthesize it, and evaluate it. I hope each of you is able to attend our Open House on Monday, August 17 th from 6:00-7:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity for you and your student to meet teachers, bring in school supplies, and for middle school & high school students to walk their schedule. Dr. Kristen Kendrick-Weikle, Superintendent The following public notification is being released for compliance with the regulations of the Federal AHERA guidelines for the management of asbestos containing materials. The Inspection Report and Management Plan is on file for review at the Warrensburg-Latham CUSD #11 Superintendent s Office. PUBLIC NOTIFICATION This notice is to inform building occupants of the potential hazard and locations of asbestos containing materials. It has been determined by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the United States Environmental Protection Agency that asbestos is a potential health hazard, and precautions should be taken to avoid disturbing any asbestos containing materials. Materials containing or suspect of containing asbestos have been found in the following school buildings: Warrensburg-Latham High School Elementary and Middle School Any evidence of disturbance or change in condition will be documented in the Management Plan as required by law. Cleaning and maintenance personnel who recognize the danger of asbestos are taking special precautions during their work to properly guard against disturbance of the asbestos containing materials. All asbestos containing material is inspected and evaluated periodically and additional measures will be taken when needed to protect the health of building occupants. 6 MODEL NOTIFICATION OF RIGHTS UNDER FERPA FOR ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age (eligible students) certain rights with respect to the student s education records. These rights are: 1. The right to inspect and review the student s education records within 45 days of the day the School receives a request for access. Parents or eligible students should submit to the School principal (or appropriate school official) a written request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect. The School official will make arrangements for access and notify the parent or eligible student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. 2. The right to request the amendment of the student s education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate. Parents or eligible students may ask the School to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate. They should write the School principal (or appropriate school official), clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate. If the School decides not to amend the record as requested by the parent or eligible student, the School will notify the parent or eligible student of the decision and advise them of their right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the parent or eligible student when notified of the right to a hearing. 3. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent. One exception, which permits disclosure without consent, is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the School as an administrator, supervisor, instructor, or support staff member (including health or medical staff and law enforcement unit personnel); a person serving on the School Board; a person or company with whom the School has contracted to perform a special task (such as an attorney, auditor, medical consultant, or therapist); or a parent or student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A School official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an education record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility. (Optional) Upon request, the School discloses education records without consent to officials of another school district in which a student seeks or intends to enroll. (NOTE: FERPA requires a school district to make a reasonable attempt to notify the parent or student of the records request unless it states in its annual notification that it intends to forward records on request.) 4. The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the School District to comply with the requirements of FERPA. 10 BOARD POLICY CONCERNING WAIVER OF SCHOOL FEES The following is the Warrensburg-Latham Board of Education policy concerning the waiver of school fees. If you have questions about this policy, please direct them to the building principals. The Superintendent will recommend to the Board of Education a schedule of fees, if any, to be charged students for the use of textbooks, consumable materials, extracurricular activities, and other school student fees. Students must also pay for the loss of or damage to school books or other school-owned materials. Fees for textbooks, other instructional materials, and driver education are waived for students who meet the eligibility criteria for a fee waiver as described in this policy. In order that no student is denied educational services or academic credit due to the inability of parents/guardians to pay student fees, the Superintendent will recommend to the Board which additional fees, if any, the District will waive for students who meet the eligibility criteria for fee waiver. Students receiving a fee waiver are not exempt from charges for lost and damaged books, locks, materials, supplies, and equipment. Eligibility Criteria A student shall be eligible for a fee waiver when the student currently lives in a household that meets the same income guidelines, with the same limits based on household size, that are used for the federal free meals program. The Superintendent or designee will give additional consideration where one or more of the following factors are present: Illness in the family; Unusual expenses such as fire, flood, storm damage, etc.; Unemployment; Emergency situations; When one or more of the parents/guardians are involved in a work stoppage. Verification The Superintendent or designee must follow the verification requirements of 7 C.F.R a when using the free lunch or breakfast eligibility guidelines pursuant to The National School Lunch Act as the basis for waiver of the student's fee(s). Determination and Appeal Within 30 calendar days after the receipt of a waiver request, the Superintendent or designee shall mail a notice to the parent/guardian whenever a waiver request is denied. The denial notice shall include: (1) the reason for the denial, (2) the process and timelines for making an appeal, and (3) a statement that the parent/guardian may reapply for a waiver any time during the school year if circumstances change. If the denial is appealed, the District shall follow the procedures for the resolution of appeals as provided in the Illinois State Board of Education rule on waiver of fees. 10

As in the past, each WLHS student will be selecting one book from the summer reading list to read and enjoy over the summer break. This year s list aims to provide even more choices that take into account the interests, reading levels, and preferences of all students. This year s list includes 41 titles from 9 different genres for your reading enjoyment. A list of summer reading titles and their descriptions can be found on the district website as well as at Barclay Library. If you need help choosing a book or would like to read a book that is not on the current list, please contact Mrs. Allen at allenm@wl.k12.il.us for assistance. 16 Warrensburg-Latham Community Unit School District Number 11 WARRENSBURG, IL ONLINE REGISTRATION STEPS AND INSTRUCTIONS Registration for current Warrensburg-Latham C.U.S.D. #11 students will be available beginning May 18, 2015 for completion ONLINE via the district s website, 1. To register your student(s) online, go to the school district website at and click on the link for Skyward Family Access. Log in with your family username and password. If you do not know your password, you may re-set it by clicking the Forgot your login/password link on the Family Access login page. Should you need further assistance please contact us. If you do not have computer access at home, there are computers at the Barclay Library in Warrensburg that you may use during their usual hours. Online registration for the school year is encouraged, onsite registration will be held on Thursday August 6, 2015 for returning students. Please visit the school district website for additional information regarding time and location for onsite registration. 2. Once in Family Access, you will see a link on the left side of the screen for ONLINE REGISTRATION. Clicking on the Online Registration link will bring up the steps you will need to complete registration for your child(ren). You will need to complete registration for each child separately. 3. If your child will be moving up to either the Middle School or the High School, you will need to use the pull down arrow next to their current school name to change to next year s school. 4. Complete all of the steps listed and be sure to click SAVE on all forms you fill out. If you click BACK on any of the forms, the data you entered will NOT be saved. After you have saved each form, you will need to check the box indicating you have completed a step before you can proceed to the next step, as the boxes do not check automatically. You can exit the online registration process and return later if necessary. 5. Please be sure to click on both of the COMPLETE REGISTRATION buttons when you are finished. (You might need to scroll down to see the first one.) You will receive an confirmation upon completion of all registration steps. If you DO NOT receive this , please log back into Family Access and verify that all of the steps were completed and checked and that your address is correct. 6. After July 1, 2015 you will be able to log into Family Access and view the fees that are due for each of your students. These fees can be paid via E-Pay (link to E-pay can be found on the school districts website at or on the Illinois Treasurer s website at or by check made payable to Warrensburg-Latham C.U.S.D. #11. 19 MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS FROM MR. HOFFMAN WELCOME BACK MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS! I hope your summer was GREAT! We will be excited to see everyone back in school and learning once again! The middle school staff have worked hard prior to the student arrival day. The many hours they have put in helps make the start of school as easy as possible for everyone. If any parent has any questions, the staff is willing to help in anyway, so please contact them if something is needed. I am sure that this school year will be a positive and exciting one. Students, please make sure to come ready to work and be attentive while also treating each other in a respectful manner. Parents, once again, let us know if you have questions or concerns. I hope to see everyone at Open House on Monday, August 17. This is a great chance to meet the teachers and walk the student s daily schedule. I am Mr. Ben Barth and will be serving as principal of WLES. I come to you with 17 years of educational experiences. I have taught at multiple levels, coached numerous sports, and been an administrator at all levels of the educational system. Most importantly, I come to you with a passion and love for helping students to believe in themselves and to learn everyday through encouragement and a focus on creating systems and support that target learning. I am committed to being part of a staff who will work daily to excel in gaining knowledge and keeping their focus on student learning. 21 Dear Warrensburg-Latham School District Parents, Alumni and Friends: The purpose of this letter is to tell you about the Warrensburg-Latham Education Foundation (WLEF). The Warrensburg-Latham Education Foundation is a non-profit organization that consists of parents, former educators, and citizens from the Warrensburg-Latham school district. The main goal of the organization is to provide funding to support our schools and further expand educational opportunities for our students. The Foundation meets regularly to review grant requests and assign funds to best meet the districts educational needs. In between those meetings, Foundation members are busy with fund raising activities, generating funds for the next cycle of giving. The Foundation has funded many projects throughout the elementary, middle, and high school, and is having a significant impact on the lives of students and teachers alike. Every year, hundreds of students are positively impacted through the efforts of the Foundation and their donors. The Giving Wall: located in the main hall of the 2010 addition, the WLEF has established a Giving Wall as a permanent tribute to those who support the Warrensburg-Latham Education Foundation. The purchase of a tile in the wall will help insure the continuing success of our students. Each student will be paired with their own device to use during the school term. To sign for the device and begin use the following conditions need to be met. All current fees paid (or acceptable payment plan entered with first payment made.) Parent/Guardian and Student present to sign forms Try to attend the meeting for your alphabetical group based on student last name Sophomore/Junior/Senior students will meet and sign for chromebooks on Monday, August 17 th in the HS Cafetorium in the following shifts: Last Names (A-E) 7:00 pm, (F-K) 7:30 pm, (L-R) 8:00 pm and (S-Z) 8:30 pm. Try to attend the meeting for your group since the chromebooks will be assigned to the individual and sorted alphabetically. Incoming freshman will meet at 7:00 pm on August 18 at the end of the Open House. Students are encouraged to come to the Open House and meet their teachers and drop supplies off to their lockers. You may attend on the 18 th if you miss your meeting on Monday, but we will have a longer presentation for the freshman group. No chromebook will be distributed to a student until forms are completed and fees are current based on payment option. If you can t make a meeting, arrange to meet at the main office at your earliest convenience. 26 WLMS BASEBALL TRYOUTS Baseball tryouts will be held on August 3rd, 4 th, and 5 th from 9-11 a.m. at the Middle School baseball diamond (or inside the MS gym if raining). Before athletes will be allowed to tryout they must have a current physical, signed handbook agreement form, signed concussion form and a signed insurance waiver (these forms can be done electronically during the online registration process). On the days of tryouts, players should be dressed in baseball pants and cleats. Bring a hat, glove, sunglasses, water, etc. (anything needed to get through the tryout process). If we must conduct the tryout in the gym, tennis shoes and shorts along with baseball gear will be fine. **The roster will consist of up to 20 players. Please note this change from previous years.** For those selected, a $50 athletic fee (payable to WLMS) is due prior to the first game. Hat ordering is not limited to just the players. I am willing to order for any and all family members interested. Just get me a size via your son. Cost is typically around $23 per hat. Equipment (helmets, pants, socks etc) can be ordered through the team shop flyer that we will have set up. Please understand that this is not required and also does not guarantee your son a spot on the team should you place an order.
