2 A Time of Celebration By: Deb Bechtel This spring, Family Promise held two events to celebrate our two years of existence in Lycoming County, a celebration dinner and an Open House. On April 21, we enjoyed a celebration dinner at the Genetti Hotel and on May 10, our 2 nd anniversary open house was held at St John s Lutheran Church in Jersey Shore. During our Celebration dinner, the guest speakers included two of our former guests. Both women recounted the support they received while involved with the program, which continued after they left. Another aspect of Family Promise that was greatly appreciated was that the family was able to stay together as a family during the time they were without a permanent home. As we were celebrating our anniversary, we had the opportunity to acknowledge our church volunteers who make such a difference in our organization. The Williamsport High School s Strolling strings provided us with excellent entertainment as we dined. The Open House provided an opportunity for the public to learn more about Family Promise, and for our volunteers to review our past year. The open house was a nice gathering of FPLC and The Company Store Partnership This year, The Company Store designated Family Promise their exclusive BOGO partner for From January through March, The Company Store matched each website or catalogue purchase of a comforter with a donation of one to a child being served by Family Promise and their affiliates. Family Promise of Lycoming County (FPLC) was the proud recipient of 500 comforters of the 16,735 new comforters shipped to over 90 Family Promise Affiliates. FPLC is planning a grand give-a-way for Sept 29th, 2012 across the street from our day center at 804 Sherman St. Comforters will be given out through a voucher system. Agencies all over Lycoming County will be offered a set number of vouchers to distribute to those in most need. Voucher recipients will come on the day of the event to pick up their comforters, share some hot chocolate and coffee and fellowship. In addition to the comforters, a limited number of new and hand made gloves, hats, scarves, coats and snow boots will be distributed to those in need. If you would like to contribute any of these items, please contact Melissa Magargle at (570) people from our existing churches, potential churches, former guests, and local agencies that we partner with. Dennis Buttorff, the mayor of Jersey Shore addressed those in attendance, praising the program for the services we provide to families in need. Both events demonstrate some reasons I became involved with Family Promise. All of us at family promise are dedicated to helping families grow and regain their self sufficiency. In a way, the temporary housing is the least of what we do. Family promise surrounds families with support and kindness. Melissa, our director, helps families identify their strengths and obstacles and develop goals to overcome their obstacles to independence. Our guests are motivated to succeed and work hard to insure an independent, successful future. Many of our guests become volunteers after they leave our program, helping others to succeed, as well. Family Promise uses no government money, has only two paid staff, and over 1,000 volunteers. I am amazed at what we can accomplish when we all work together. If you are not already involved, there is room for you to join our great volunteers. Contact us for information on how you too can be part of the solution to homelessness, one family at a time. Patty Fox, Mary Ann Vance, Kelly Alexander, Melissa Magargle, Ed Mertes, Mayor Dennis Buttorff, Richard Green and Rev Kerry Aucker pose with the cake. From the Executive Director FPLC has been working diligently to help children and their families that have found themselves in a homeless situation. We work to help each guest meet their individual goals and break the barriers that have contributed to their situation. We do what we do with the generosity of out congregations, volunteers and community agencies and businesses. We do not get government grants. We are extremely proud to be able to give back to the community that has been so supportive of Family Promise and has helped us achieve our goals for each and every guest in our program. We look forward to distributing 500 comforters and winter essentials to those in need. All contributions to our efforts are welcome and again, Thank You to all Lycoming County residents and businesses for your support. Page 2

3 Charitable Giving 101 By Jeanette Kitchen Use a charitable trust When developing your estate plan, you can do well by doing good. Leaving money to charity rewards you in many ways. It gives you a sense of personal satisfaction, and it can save you money in estate taxes. A few words about transfer taxes The federal government taxes transfers of wealth you make to others, both during your life and at your death. In 2012, generally, the federal gift and estate tax is imposed on transfers in excess of $5,120,000 and at a top rate of 35 percent. There is also a separate generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax that is imposed on transfers made to grandchildren and lower generations. For 2012, there is a $5,120,000 exemption and the top rate is 35 percent. Note: In 2013, the gift and estate tax exemption will revert to $1 million and the GST tax exemption will revert to $1 million adjusted for inflation, unless Congress acts to change that. Another way for you to make charitable gifts is to create a charitable trust. There are many types of charitable trusts, the most common of which include the charitable lead trust and the charitable remainder trust. A charitable lead trust pays income to your chosen charity for a certain period of years after your death. Once that period is up, the trust principal passes to your family members or other heirs. The trust is known as a charitable lead trust because the charity gets the first, or lead, interest. A charitable remainder trust is the mirror image of the charitable lead trust. Trust income is payable to your family members or other heirs for a period of years after your death or for the lifetime of one or more beneficiaries. Then, the principal goes to your favorite charity. The trust is known as a charitable remainder trust because the charity gets the remainder interest. Depending on which type of trust you use, the dollar value of the lead (income) interest or the remainder interest produces the estate tax charitable deduction. You may also be subject to state transfer taxes. Why use a charitable lead trust? Careful planning is needed to minimize transfer taxes, and charitable giving can play an important role in your estate plan. By leaving money to charity the full amount of your charitable gift may be deducted from the value of your gift or taxable estate. Make an outright bequest in your will The easiest and most direct way to make a charitable gift is by an outright bequest of cash in your will. Making an outright bequest requires only a short paragraph in your will that names the charitable beneficiary and states the amount of your gift. The outright bequest is especially appropriate when the amount of your gift is relatively small, or when you want the funds to go to the charity without strings attached. Make a charity the beneficiary of an IRA or retirement plan The charitable lead trust is an excellent estate planning vehicle if you are optimistic about the future performance of the investments in the trust. If created properly, a charitable lead trust allows you to keep an asset in the family while being an effective tax-minimization device. For example, you create a $1 million charitable lead trust. The trust provides for fixed annual payments of $80,000 (or 8 percent of the initial $1 million value of the trust) to ABC Charity for 25 years. At the end of the 25-year period, the entire trust principal goes outright to your beneficiaries. To figure the amount of the charitable deduction, you have to value the 25-year income interest going to ABC Charity. To do this, you use IRS tables. Based on these tables, the value of the income interest can be high--for example, $900,000. This means that your estate gets a $900,000 charitable deduction when you die, and only $100,000 of the $1 million gift is subject to estate tax. Why use a charitable remainder trust? If you have funds in an IRA or employer-sponsored retirement plan, you can name your favorite charity as a beneficiary. Naming a charity as beneficiary can provide double tax savings. First, the charitable gift will be deductible for estate tax purposes. Second, the charity will not have to pay any income tax on the funds it receives. This double benefit can save combined taxes that otherwise could eat up a substantial portion of your retirement account. A charitable remainder trust takes advantage of the fact that lifetime charitable giving generally results in tax savings when compared to testamentary charitable giving. A donation to a charitable remainder trust has the same estate tax effect as a bequest because, at your death, the donated asset has been removed from your estate. Be aware, however, that a portion of the donation is brought back into your estate through the charitable income tax

5 Success Stories Who can forget this face? Ted & Nikoli seemed to linger with FPLC for a long time. It was not for a lack of trying though and with a lot of effort and the help of some wonderful people, Ted obtained a great job, got his drivers license and purchased a car. Recently they moved into Journey House until they make the further transition to their own permanent residence. They continue to be actively involved with our After Care program and are doing well. Neither of these two are going to be forgotten any time soon. Heather, Tamera and Michael moved into their new place on May 16th, Although a little bitter sweet for Michael to leave his friends behind, he was extremely excited to have his own room. Heather continues to work full time as a CNA while Tamera continues her education on-line. They too continue to work with our After Care program. They are just another Family Promise success story of what a little love and compassion can do for a family. We wish them continued success. Although they were not around long enough to even get a picture, we cannot forget Steffie, James, Jared and Logan. Although they had battled with homelessness for several months, they were able to relax enough with Family Promise to get things in line and moved into their own place in just 7 days. I think this is a record, one we would love to beat. Happy Birthday Sarah Sarah Fils-Aime of South Williamsport decided that she did not want anything for herself for her birthday, so she asked all of her friends to bring a toy for a child at Family Promise. She donated many brand new toys to be given to the children that come to stay with us at Family Promise. She said she knew she was extremely blessed and just wanted to help and give a child something they can have for their own. Thank you to Sarah and her friends and family that donated the toys. 50th Wedding Anniversary - Mary Ellen Rosenbaum presents Director Melissa Magargle with a check from Messiah Lutheran Church from their community yard sale. Overall, they contributed $ to FPLC. Mary Ellen and Donald Rosenbaum celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary surrounded by family and friends. Instead of gifts, the family requested that all gifts be given in honor of the Rosenbaum s Anniversary to FPLC. In all, they donated $1285 to Family Promise. We thank Mary Ellen and Donald not just for this but for the continued dedication to the program and wish them the very best as they celebrate the coming years together. The Community Provides Iron Chef IV This year s Iron Chef Williamsport competition between St. Mark s Lutheran Church and Balls Mills United Methodist Church proved to be another success. The competition raised $3741 to help Family Promise. Former Guest Quote: I believe that Family promise is not only an organization to help and alleviate homelessness, but a place where not only a smile helps the families in the program feel more comfortable, having them know that a group of faith-bound people and church congregations aren t showing any discrimination towards them and just telling that God provides and that he can make and give miracles when least expected. It s not only the roles of every volunteer that matter, its also having an organized and pretty amazing committee that helps provide the miracles God has set for the families. Page 5

This arts and crafts campaign for kids with homes to help kids without was created by Mark Wasserman for Family Promise and recently won an AARP national volunteer service competition. The boxes can be decorated as an individual or group and come with lessons to go along with it based on age groups. Kids get the opportunity to be creative and learn to give back to those less fortunate then themselves by collecting loose change for Family Promise. If your group or organization is interested in participating or learning more about Houses for Change, go to the national website at Small quantities are available by contacting Melissa Magargle at (570) Get a job Is it really as simple as that? You need an ID to get a job, you need a birth certificate to get an ID. If you do not have a birth certificate you need a social security card to get it. If you do not have that, you cannot even walk into the Federal Building without a picture ID. The cycle is vicious and it all cost money. These obstacles can be overcome with the right help. By contributing to the Back to Work fund, you can help someone get a job. All contributions need to be clearly marked as Back to Work. All donations are tax deductable and should be mailed to PO box 1052, Williamsport PA
