1 Glass transitions in two-dimensional suspensions of olloidal ellipsoids Zhongyu Zheng, Feng Wang and Yilong Han Department of Physis, Hong Kong University of Siene and Tehnology, Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong, China (Dated: February 6, 013) arxiv: v1 [ond-mat.soft] 9 May 011 We observed a two-step glass transition in monolayers of olloidal ellipsoids by video mirosopy. The glass transition in the rotational degree of freedom was at a lower density than that in the translational degree of freedom. Between the two transitions, ellipsoids formed an orientational glass. Approahing the respetive glass transitions, the rotational and translational fastest-moving partiles in the superooled liquid moved ooperatively and formed lusters with power-law size distributions. The mean luster sizes diverge in power law as approahing the glass transitions. The lusters of translational and rotational fastest-moving ellipsoids formed mainly within pseudonemati domains, and around the domain boundaries, respetively. Colloids are outstanding model systems for glass transition studies beause the trajetories of individual partiles are measurable by video mirosopy [1]. In the past two deades, signifiant experimental effort has been applied to studying olloidal glasses onsisting of isotropi partiles [1 5], but little to anisotropi partiles [6]. The glass transition of anisotropi partiles has been studied in three dimensions (3D) mainly through simulation [7, 8]. Moleular mode-oupling theory (MMCT) predits that partile anisotropy should lead to new phenomena in glass transitions [9, 10], and some of these have been observed in reent 3D simulations of hard ellipsoids [11, 1]. MMCT [10, 13] suggests that hard ellipsoids with an aspet ratio p >.5 in 3D an form an orientational glass in whih rotational degrees of freedom beome glass while the enter-of-mass motion remains ergodi [9]. Suh a liquid glass [14], in analogy to a liquid rystal, has not yet been explored in 3D or even D experiments. Anisotropi partiles should also enable exploration of the dynami heterogeneity in the rotational degrees of freedom. Moreover the glass transitions of monodispersed partiles have not yet been studied in D. It is well known that monodispersed spheres an be quenhed to a glass in 3D, but hardly in D even at the fastest aessible quenhing rate. Hene bidispersed or highly polydispersed spheres have been used in experiments [5, 15, 16], simulations [17] and theory [18] for D glasses. In ontrast, we found that monodispersed ellipsoids of intermediate aspet ratio are exellent glass formers in D beause their shape an effetively frustrate rystallization and nemati order. Here we investigate the glass transition in monolayers of olloidal ellipsoids using video mirosopy. We measured the translational and rotational relaxation times, the non-gaussian parameter of the distribution of displaements, and the lusters of ooperative fastestmoving partiles. These results onsistently showed that the glass transitions of rotational and translational motions our in two different area frations, defining an intermediate orientational glass phase. The ellipsoids were synthesized by strething polymethyl metharylate (PMMA) spheres [19, 0]. They had a small polydispersity of 5.6% with the semi-long axis a = 3.33 µm and the semi-short axes b = = 0.56 µm. 3mM sodium dodeyl sulfate (SDS) was added to stabilize ellipsoids and the > 3 mm ioni strength in the aqueous suspension made ellipsoids moderately hard partiles. A monolayer of ellipsoids was strongly onfined between two glass walls [0]. Light interferene measurements showed that the wall separation varied by only 30 nm per 1 mm [0], so the walls ould be onsidered as parallel within the field of view. The area fration φ πabρ, where ρ is the number density averaged over all video frames. Twelve densities were measured in the range 0 φ 1. During the three to six hours measurments at eah φ, no drift flow or density hange was observed. The thermal motion of the ellipsoids was reorded using a harge-oupled devie amera resolving pixels at 1 frame per seond (fps) for the highest five onentrations and at 3 fps for lower onentrations. The enter-of-mass positions and orientations of individual ellipsoids were traked using our image proessingalgorithm[1]. Theangularresolutionwas1 and the spatial resolutions were 0.1 µm and 4 µm along the long and the short axes respetively. More experimental details are in the Supplemental Material (SM). At high densities the ellipsoids spontaneously formed small pseudo-nemati domains with branh-like strutures eah involving about 10 partiles, see Fig. S1 of the SM. The translational relaxation was haraterized by the self-intermediate sattering funtion F s (q,t) N j=1 eiq (xj(t) xj(0)) /N where x j (t) is the position of ellipsoid j at time t, N is the total number of partiles, q is the sattering vetor and denotes a time average. In Fig. 1, we hose q m =.3 µm 1 measured from the first peak position in the struture fator at high density. The rotational relaxation an be haraterized by the n th order of the orientational orrelation funtion L n (t) N j=1 osn(θ j(t) θ j (0)) /N where n is a positive integer and θ j is the orientation of ellipsoid j. L n (t) deays faster for larger n, and different hoies of n an yield the same glass transition point. n = 4 in Fig. 1 was hosen so that L n (t) an be better displayed within our measured time sales. At high φ,

Open symbols: different hoies of n in L n(t) for the orientational motion. both F s (q m,t) and L 4 (t) develop two-step relaxations, the harateristis upon approahing the glass transition. The short-time β-relaxation orresponds to motion within ages of neighboring partiles, and the long-time α-relaxation reflets strutural rearrangement involving a series of age breakings. Aording to mode-oupling theory (MCT), the α-relaxation follows e (t/τ)β. Figure 1() shows that β dereases with density, indiating dynami slowing down upon superooling [11, ]. MCT predits that the relaxation time τ(φ) diverges algebraially approahing the ritial point φ : τ(φ) (φ φ) γ where γ = 1/+1/ [3]. Here a and b are the exponents in the ritial-deay law F s (q,t) = fq +h qt a and thevonshweidlerlawf s (q,t) = fq h qt b at the initial stage of the β-relaxation and the rossover time to the α-relaxation respetively. The fitted a or b is almost a onstant at different φ, indiating that F s (q,t) an ollapse onto a master urve in the appropriate time regime. This demonstrates that F s (q,t) an be separated into a q-dependent and a t-dependent part [3]. Interestingly, L n (t) an similarly ollapse. The fitted a T = 0.3 ± and b T = 0.63 ± for F s (q m,t) and a θ = 0.3± and b θ = 0.65± for L 4 (t) yield γ T =.45±5andγ θ =.33±5forthe translational and orientational orrelations respetively. These values are lose to the γ T =.3 measured for 3D ellipsoids [1]. In Fig. 1(d), τ 1/γ is linear in φ for different hoies of q and n. Interestingly, all the salings show that the glass transitions are at φ θ = 0.7 ± 1 for rotational motion and φ T = 0.79 ± 1 for translational motion. This indiates three distint phases: liquid (φ < 0.7), an intermediate orientational glass whih is liquid-like in its translational degrees of freedom but glassy in its rotational degrees of freedom (0.7 < φ < 0.79), and the glass state for both degrees of freedom (φ > 0.79). Besides the extrapolations in Fig. 1(d), the existene of the orientational glass phase was verified from the non- Gaussian parameters α (t) = x 4 /(3 x ) 1 of partile displaements x during time t [1]. In superooled liquids, the distribution of x is Gaussian at short and long times beause the motions are diffusive, but it beomes non-gaussian with long tails at the intermediate times due to ooperative out-of-age displaements [1, 4, 4]. This behavior is refleted in the peak of α (t), see Fig.. As φ inreases, the peak rises and shifts towards a longer time, indiating growing dynami heterogeneity on approahing the glass transitions. In ontrast, the glass phase laks ooperative out-of-age motions, so α (t) exhibits no distint peak and delines with time [1]. Suh a sharp hange has been regarded as a harateristi of a glass transition [1]. Figure learly shows the glass transitions at φ θ = 0.7± for rotational motion and at φ T = 0.79±for translationalmotion. In Fig., α (t) is always greater than the orresponding α (t), indiating that the translational relaxations and ooperative out-of-age motions are mainly along the long axes of the ellipsoids. The two glass transitions an be further onfirmed from the spatial distribution of the fastest-moving partiles whih haraterizes the strutural relaxation and dynami heterogeneity [1]. In Fig. 3, the fastest-moving 8% of the partiles is labeled in olors beause the non- Gaussian long tail of the distribution of x(t ) overs about 8% of the population. Here t orresponds to the maximum of α [1]. Different hoies of t and the perentage yield the similar results. Neighboring fastestmoving ellipsoids form lusters and are labeled using the same olor. Here two ellipsoids are defined as neighbors if they overlap after being expanded by 1.5 times and their losest distane does not interset a third parti-

In the supersaturated liquid, most fast partiles were strongly spatially orrelated and formed large extended lusters, see Figs. 3 and Fig. S3 in the SM. This demonstrates the α-relaxation ours by ooperative partile motion in both the translational and rotational degrees of freedom: when one partile moves, another partile moves losely following the first. The olloidal glasses, in ontrast, show no disernible α-relaxation, and the fastest partiles in β-relaxation are randomly dispersed without forming large lusters [1], as observed in the 3D glass transition of olloidal spheres [1]. Figure 3 learly depits three regimes: both the translational and rotational fast partiles are distributed heterogeneously with large lusters at φ < 0.7; the rotational fast partiles are dispersed homogenously while the translational fast partiles form large lusters at 0.7 < φ < 0.79; and both types of fast partiles are dispersed homogenously at φ > The spatial distributions of translational and rotational fast-partile lusters were antiorrelated. Figures 3(a,) show that most translational fast partiles belonged to a few large ribbon-like lusters aligned with their long axes within the pseudo-nemati domains. In FIG. 4: (olor online) The probability distribution funtions for the luster size of translational and rotational fastest-moving partiles. The lines are the best fits of P(N ) N µ. The vertial dotted and dashed lines represent the glass transitions for rotational and translational motions respetively. (d) The weighted mean luster size N (φ φ) η where φ θ = 0.71 and φ T = ontrast, the lusters of rotational fast partiles formed branh-like strutures extending over several small domains around the domain boundaries, see Fig. 3. Fast rotational ellipsoids moved between domains by ooperative rotational motion. This demonstrates that the nemati order within a domain failitates translational relaxation while the orientational disorder near domain boundaries promotes rotational relaxation. Fast translational partiles are responsible for the out-of-age diffusion, while fast rotational partiles are responsible for domain transformations suh as splitting, merging and rotating. All the phases in Figs. 3(a-f) ontain some isolated fast translational and rotational partiles; they are mainly distributed at the domain boundaries with random orientations. The luster sizes of the fast partiles, N, exhibit a power-law distribution P(N ) N µ as shown in Figs. 4(a, b). The fitted exponents µ for translational and rotational motions hange dramatially near their respetive glass transitions see Fig. 4(). The µ θ,t =.0 ± for supersaturated liquids is lose to the µ T =.± estimated for hard spheres [1] and the µ T = 1.9 ± 0.1 for Lennard-Jones partiles in 3D [4], while the µ θ,t = 3. ± 0.1 for glasses is lose to the µ T = 3.1 estimated for hard spheres in 3D [1]. Hene µ.5 might haraterize suh glass transitions in general. Figure 4(d) shows the weighted mean luster size N = N P(N )/ N P(N ) [1, 4] at different densities. Both N θ and NT diverge on approahing
4 4 the orresponding φ : N (φ φ) η with fitted η θ = 1 and η T = 0.75, indiating growing ooperative regions of mobile partiles. Similar saling and η T s have been observed in a Lennard-Jones system [4], but the mehanism is not lear. We did not observed nemati phase or semeti domains found in 3D spheroylinders [5] beause 1) the elliptial shape failitates partiles hanging orientation and forming branh-like strutures at high densities [6]; ) The 5.6% polydispersity promotes glass formation. 3) Long-wavelength flutuations are stronger in D than in 3D, whih an more easily break the long-range order as desribed by Mermin-Wagner theorem. Ellipsoids with p 6appearedtobe goodglassformers, whih aneasily preempt any isotropi-nemati(in) phase transition[7]. In ontrast, the glass transition an be preempted by rystallization for p 1 in D, or by an IN transition for rods with p > 5 in 3D [8]. All of the measurements onsistently showed that the glass transitions for ellipsoids with p = 6 onfined between two walls are at φ θ = 0.7 for rotational motion and at φ T = 0.79 for translational motion. For longer ellipsoids with p = 9 (a = 5.9 µm, b = = 0.65 µm), φ θ = 0.60 ± and φ T = 0.7 ± were observed in the two-wall onfinement. This suggests that the intermediate regime between φ θ and φ T inreases with the aspet ratio, whih ould be the reason why suh an intermediate regime has not been observed in previous 3D simulations of ellipsoids with small aspet ratios [1, 8]. We also observed the two-step glass transitions in monolayers of heavy ellipsoid sediment near one wall, but the transitions inreased by 3% area fration beause of the stronger out-of-plane flutuations. We onlude that olloidal ellipsoids in a D system exhibit two glass transitions with an intermediate orientational glass. This behavior has been predited in 3D by MMCT but not studied in D before. The two glass transitions in the rotational and translational degrees of freedom orrespond to inter-domain freezing and innerdomain freezing respetively. The orientational glass regime appears to inrease with the aspet ratio. Approahing the glass transitions, the strutural relaxation time and the mean luster size for ooperative motion diverge typial features of a glass transition [, 3, 4]. Interestingly, the translational and orientational ooperative motions are antiorrelated in spae, whih has not been predited in theory or simulation. A similar twostep glass transition has been observed in a 3D liquidrystal system and explained as the freezing of the orientations of the pseudo-nemati domains and the freezing of the translational motion within domains [9]. Here we diretly observed the onjetured pseudo-nemati domains in ref. [9]. These results at single-partile resolution shed new light on the formation of moleular glasses, espeially at low dimensionality. WethankNingXu andpengertongforthehelpful disussion.
