This manual is intended for professional installers not for end users. Please handle this information with care. Overview This manual describes what to do in case a built-in HDD develops a malfunction during the use of the NSR-500 series. A RAID 5 is chosen at the factory for NSR-500:04, NSR-500:08, and NSR-500:12 containing 4 or 6 HDDs each. The RAID 5 allows you to continue to use the system normally without stopping service even when one of the HDDs goes down. By hot-swapping the defective HDD with a new one in service, proper data will be automatically written in the replaced HDD and the system will be restored to the normal status before a failure. Even after purchase, you can customize your system to the desired RAID configuration through the clean installation process. Be careful not to remove normal HDD(s). Once removed, you will never use it for rebuilding or as a Hotspare HDD with the NSR-500 series, even if the removed one is not defective. Precautions Terms Degrade", Rebuild" and Synchronize" of RAID related ones are defined as follows in this manual. Degrade: In the condition where the system operates and a normal recording and playback are possible thanks to the RAID feature although one of the HDDs malfunctions Rebuild: To restore the RAID array after the defective HDD is replaced Synchronize: To calculate parity from data in order to build a RAID array after the clean installation, and write the resultant in the HDD when one of RAID1, RAID1+0, RAID5 or RAID5 + Hotspare is being selected. Even with fault-tolerant RAID1, RAID1+0, RAID5 or RAID5 + Hotspare, the system cannot be restored if two or more HDDs malfunction at the same time. To avoid this, replace the defective HDD immediately after the system falls into the degraded state. For replacement, a brand-new HDD only is available. You do not have to turn off the power before starting the HDD replacement, otherwise noted. A cold swap is also possible in addition to a hot swap. Refer to NSR-500 Installation Guide" when performing a clean installation. NSR-500 Installation Guide (at Other s/white Paper ) ( 1
How To Know the Abnormality of HDD(s) When the ERROR lamp on the monitor screen is lit, and the error message (*1) is displayed in the system logs, be sure to heck that the RAID LED and HDD LED(s) on the front of the unit are lit, because the HDD itself is estimated to be defective. If Mail Notification Setting" is configured in advance, you can receive a each time hardware error occurs. Checking the LED status is also required. *1: The unit displays the error message below. ERROR RAID[***] CRITICAL Description on RAID LED Clicking the ERROR lamp can display the system logs. RAID LED HDD LEDs (HDD1 to HDD6) Color of LED (lighting state) Green (lit) Amber (lit) Red (lit) Description Normal Indicates that the system is being degraded or being rebuilt. Check the HDD LEDs. Indicates that the RAID configurations malfunction and data recovery is impossible. In this case, replace the HDD with its HDD LED ilt in red, and perform a clean installation. (Refer to Section B.) Description on HDD LED Color of LED (lighting state) Green (lit) Amber (lit) Description Normal Indicates that new data is being written in the HDD for rebuilding. Red (lit) Indicates that the HDD goes down. HDD replacement is required. (Refer to Section A or B.) 2
A. Replacing HDD in the use of a RAID Configuration without Hotspare (RAID1, RAID 1+0, or RAID5) Procedures RAID LED HDD LED (Defective 1. Replace the defective HDD (with its HDD LED lit in red) with a new one referring to Appendix2. At the replacement, you do not have to turn off the power of the unit. 2. At the completion of HDD replacement, the system will start to rebuild the RAID configuration by itself. 3. At the completion of the rebuilding, the RAID LED and HDD LED for the target HDD are both lit in green. (For information on required time for rebuilding, refer to Appendix1.) Replacing HDD in the use of a RAID 5 with Hotspare When an HDD malfunctions, the system will automatically start to rebuild the RAID using a Hotspare HDD. Even during the rebuilding, you can replace the defective HDD. Procedures RAID LED HDD LED (Defective HDD LED (Hotspare) 1. Replace the defective HDD (with its HDD LED lit in red) with a new one referring to Appendix2. (The system will automatically start to rebuild the RAID using a Hotspare HDD.) At the replacement, you do not have to turn off the power of the unit. 2. At the completion of the rebuilding, the RAID LED and HDD LED for the Hotspare HDD are both lit in green. (For information on required time for rebuilding, refer to Appendix1.) After HDD replacement 3. Check that all the HDD LEDs turn to green. This shows the completion of the work. 3
B. Clean Installation When the RAID LED is lit in red, a clean installation is required. The clean installation initializes the unit and the recorded data is lost. Procedures RAID LED HDD LED (Failed 1. Replace the defective HDD (with its HDD LED lit in red) with a new one referring to Appendix2. Before replacement, be sure to turn off the power of the unit. Before turning off the power, remember which HDD LED is lit in red. 2. After the HDD replacement, perform a clean installation, referring to NSR Installation Guide". 3. After the completion of the clean installation, make the required settings to go into service. After the completion of the clean installation, the system will automatically start to synchronize the RAID and then the RAID LED and HDD LEDs are lit in green. Even during the sync process, you can make the settings. 4. You can make sure the completion of synchronization by the system log. (*2) (For information on required time for synchronization, refer to Appendix1.) After powered off (Dark) After the clean installation After powered off (Dark) After the clean installation HDD LED (Normal After powered off (Dark) After the clean installation *2 Description on System Logs RAID[RAID:HWSATA:2] SYNCHRONIZING: xx% Indicates the system is in sync process and has xx% progress RAID[RAID:HWSATA:2] ONLINE Indicates the completion of synchronization 4

Appendix 2:Replacing HDD 1. Insert the HDD cover key which comes with the unit in a lock and turn 90 degrees counterclockwise, to unlock the front cover. Remove the front cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Remove the HDD lock for the slot that corresponds to the defective HDD with its HDD LED lit in red by pushing the tabs inward. 3. With a finger, unlatch the tray by pushing its notch portion leftward and draw out the HDD tray toward you. 4. Remove the four screws (+K, UNCx5) to remove the HDD from the tray. 5. Set the HDD into the tray in the direction illustrated and secure it by reversing the procedure in step Install the tray with the HDD with the reversed procedures from step 1 to 3. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 6
Appendix 3:Frequently Asked Questions What will happen by shutting the unit down in the condition where an HDD is malfunctioning? The unit can be restored from the degrade state by the power-on. What will happen by shutting the unit down in the condition a defective HDD is removed? What will happen by replacing a defective HDD in the power-off state? With regard to RAID1, RAID1+0 and RAID5, both Hot Swap and Cold Swap are possible. The system automatically starts to rebuild the RAID immediately after a Hot swap or Cold swap is performed in the degrade state. What will happen by shutting the unit down without restoring it to the state before failure, after a defective HDD is replaced with a new one? If you shut down the unit during the sync process after the clean installation or during the rebuild after the replacement of the defective HDD, each process will resume automatically after the unit is powered on again. I removed a normal HDD by mistake. Can I reuse the removed one? No. Please note that a brand new HDD only is available for replacement. Once removed, you cannot use it for rebuilding or as a Hotspare HDD with the NSR-500 series, even if the removed one is not defective. Is there a way to know which is a Hotspare HDD? No, such a way is not provided. When one of HDDs goes down and is replaced with a new one, that one will become the next Hotspare. 7
