1 College Based Scholarships and Grants The following listing is comprised of scholarships and awards from local and state-wide educational institutions that are made known to our office. This is not a complete list of all available scholarships. Be sure to contact the colleges that you plan to attend to receive information about available scholarships and grants. For a customized scholarship search visit NOTE: Allow ample time to write personal statements and secure letters of recommendation. In some cases, deadlines reflect timetables for earlier years and may vary for this year. Deadlines often require application to be received by the indicated date. Open: CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Mt. Pleasant, MI) Students qualify automatically for renewable awards in the following categories: Board of Trustee for 3.5 GPA worth 12 hours tuition; Valedictorians and Salutatorians equal to 16 hours, and Multi-Cultural Advancement for full-tuition. Apply by CMU due date. See cmich.edu. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY - Michigan Merit Plus Seniors who qualify for the Michigan Merit Award and earn a min. 3.0 GPA after seven semesters are eligible to receive $500-$1,250 non-renewable award. FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY Residential Life - All students with 3.0 GPA and 20 ACT or better who live in a residential hall will receive $2,000 scholarship renewable for another three years. Honors Program - Min. $2,000 added to other scholarships for students 3.4 GPA & 24 ACT. GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY Freshman with at least a 3.5 GPA and 26 ACT will receive automatically $1,000 upon enrollment. HOPE COLLEGE (Merit-Based Awards) Students are considered for following awards upon receipt of application. In most cases must be enrolled no later than Feb. 15. Check Hope for actual due dates. Trustee - $17,000 yearly on basis of GPA & test scores. Thirty granted per year. National Merit - $17,000 yearly for National Merit finalists Presidential - $6,000-$15,000 yearly with min. 3.6 GPA & 28 ACT Distinguished Scholar - $5,000-$6,000 based upon course selection, GPA and test scores Valedictorian - $5,000 yearly for those not receiving other Hope merit-based scholarships Alumni Honors - $3,000-$4,500 yearly with 3.75 or 3.5 and 25 ACT or 1150 SAT Distinguished Artist - $2,500 yearly based upon artistic talent and academic record for visual arts, dance, music, creative writing & theatre. 2 KETTERING UNIVERSITY (Flint, MI) Top students in engineering, computers, business, math & science are invited to scholars weekend for four-year awards up to $60,000. Especially geared to providing leadership talent for industry. Cooperative education system which alternates 12 weeks of campus experience and 12 weeks on-the-job. KETTERING UNIVERSITY (Flint, MI) All accepted applicants meeting the following criteria will receive renewable merit based scholarships. $10,000 for GPA of 3.0+/ACT 31 or 3.8+/27 ACT; $7,500 for GPA of 3.0+/27 ACT or 4.0/23 ACT; $5,000 for GPA 3.0+/24 ACT. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Check out all the scholarships available at MICHIGAN TECH UNIVERSITY (HOUGHTON, MI) - Business and Economics $500-1,000 for selected freshmen with 25 ACT, 3.0 GPA and in top 20% of class. NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY (Midland, MI) Scholarships offered to new students admitted to Northwood. Presidential $9,000 based on 28 ACT/3.8 GPA; Freedom $7,500 based on 25 ACT/3.0 GPA; Free-Enterprise $5, ACT/2.7 GPA. Not dependent upon financial need. Northwood.edu. September: EMORY UNIVERITY (EMORY SCHOLARS PROGRAM): An Emory University merit-based scholarship program for students who have outstanding records of academic achievement, extraordinary personal qualities, and have made significant contributions to their class, their school, and their community. Nomination for this award must be made through the student s counselor. Awards span four years and range from two-thirds tuition to full tuition, room, board, and fees. Nomination forms are available in the Counseling Office. Nomination form and student s completed application for admission must arrive in the Emory Office of Admissions by November 1. October: CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY - Centralis Award Competition Students with at least 3.5 GPA are eligible to compete for valuable scholarships. Up to 40 Centralis awards are granted each year ranging in value of $4,790 to $11,590 renewable. All who complete minimally receive the Board of Trustees award of $1,500 yearly. Registration is required for the competition. FASHION INSTITUTE OF DESIGN & MERCHANDISING (FIDM) Six one-year scholarships awarded to seniors who demonstrate an exceptional talent and interest in the below mentioned fields. FIDM offers A.A. Degree programs and a B.S. Degree that lead
3 to careers in the global industries of Fashion, Visual Arts, Graphics, Interior Design, Digital Media, and Entertainment. Campuses are located in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orange County, and San Diego. For more information visit or call Deadline is the end of April. MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY (Houghton, MI) Full ride plus $600, for outstanding senior with demonstrated scholarship, leadership, and creative abilities. Renewable for four years based on 3.25 GPA each year. NORTHERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Marquette, MI) Academic Achievement and Leadership Scholarships are based on min. 3.5 GPA and 24 ACT to qualify for competition held in November. $1,000-$6,000. November: CALVIN COLLEGE - Howard Hughes Medical Institute Scholarship Six $2,500 scholarships for seniors who intend to pursue a career in research and/or postsecondary education in biology or related disciplines of chemistry, biochemistry, physics or math at Calvin. Min. 3.5 GPA and 28 ACT. Deadline to apply is the end of January. CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY - Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship Covers four years of tuition, room and board, and books (over $37,000). Applicants need a minimum 3.0 GPA and 18 ACT composite. Deadline to apply is the end of February. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Ypsilanti, MI) Based on competitive exams, everyone who competes receives at least $6,200 with 3.5 GPA/25 ACT. Presidential Scholars receive $34,000. Runners-up receive $10,400-$12,400. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY Alumni Association Scholarship A $1,250 renewable scholarship awarded to a child or grandchild of EMU alumni. Min. 3.2 GPA and enrolled as full time student. Applications available in the Counseling Office or at MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY (East Lansing, MI) Medical Scholars - Ten students admitted by Nov. 1, will receive the opportunity to bypass the Medical College Admission Test and regular admission process when they have received their four-year degree. Candidates for the program must demonstrate, through experiences in community leadership and medical/clinical activities, their interests in becoming physicians. Agriculture & Natural Resources - Students who apply by Nov. 1, and declare a major preference in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources, will be considered for a $5,000 yearly scholarship. Selection based upon academic merit, leadership, and interview. Semifinalists receive $1,000-$2,500. msu.edu. SPECS HOWARD SCHOOL OF BROADCAST ARTS (Southfield, MI) Broadcast Arts One full-tuition and three partial-tuition scholarships are awarded to students pursing an education in broadcast arts.
4 Graphic Design - Two full-tuition scholarships and six partial-tuition scholarships are awarded to students interested in pursuing an education in graphic design. Scholarship testing for broadcast arts and graphic design occurs the beginning of February in Southfield, Michigan. Many are firstcome, first served, so apply early. DEVRY INSTITUTE (Several locations) Dean s Scholarship for ACT scores of 24 or above. Value $1500 per term and renewable. FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY FIRST Robotics Scholarship Three $1,000 awards that can be utilized in any program of study. Applicants must apply to Ferris before April 1, have participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition or First Vex Challenge, and provide documentation confirming participation. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Deadline to apply is the end of April. FSU Alumni and Friends Must be an incoming freshman with a 3.0 or higher GPA and be enrolled full-time at FSU in any degree granting program. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Deadline is May 1. O Brien-Quy Endowment Must have 3.0 or higher GPA, and be enrolled full-time in one of the following programs: College of Arts & Science (Biotechnology or Political Science), College of Business (Accountancy), College of Education (Elementary & Secondary Teacher Education). Financial need must be demonstrated through FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Deadline is May 1. Kelso Battle A $4,000 renewable scholarship. Applicants must have a 3.5 or higher GPA and a minimum ACT score of 26. Must be enrolled in one of the following programs: Industrial Environmental Health Management, Applied Mathematics,
5 Biotechnology, Industrial Chemistry, Pre-Engineering, Computer Information Systems. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Deadline is May 1. Academic Opportunity A $2,000 renewable scholarship if the student maintains a 2.75 college GPA. Applicants must have a 3.0 or high GPA, and preference is given to minority students. GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (Allendale, MI) Mary Jane Dockeray Science Scholarship Two $1,500 scholarships for students pursuing a career in science. Applicants must be from Kent, Ottawa or Muskegon ISD. Consideration is given to academic achievement and potential for success in a science career. Financial need is not a determining factor. Applications and recommendation forms are available in the Counseling Office or at MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Distinguished Minority - 15 full-tuition awards based on strong academic achievement. Applicants for admission must then apply for the award by January 1. Departmental - College of Agriculture & Natural Resources - (2) $5,000 renewable & (4) $2,000 awards. College of Human Ecology - (3) $1,000. Creative Arts (Art, creative writing, theatre) need separate application after Dec. 1 admission. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY - College of Education Alumni Club $1,000 for K-12 education major with at least a 3.5 GPA and work experience with children or youth. Applicants should be involved in honors and extracurricular activities. Must have been admitted to MSU by earlier date. OAKLAND UNIVERSITY Talented Scholar (Rochester, MI) Valedictorians and salutatorians automatically qualify for $3,126 renewable scholarships regardless of GPA. Students with 3.2 GPA are encouraged to apply for other scholarships. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI CLUB OF WEST MICHIGAN One senior from West Michigan area planning to attend Ohio State U. will be selected to receive a scholarship of at least $600. Must be in top 25% of class and have demonstrated involvement in school and community activities. An interview is required. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. Deadline is the end of January. OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY NATIONAL BUCKEYE SCHOLARSHIP Award of $7,200 ($28,800 four-year value) to non-ohio students. Applicants must be admitted to the Columbus campus for autumn quarter and must have ACT compostie scores of 17. This award can be combined with other merit scholarships. Recipient must maintain a 2.5 or higher GPA from the second year forward to renew this award. Apply at UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN (Dearborn, MI) Chancellors Scholarships provide tuition awards to academically superior students with extracurricular and community service involvement and min. 3.6 GPA and 80% ACT/SAT.
6 WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Kalamazoo, MI) Medallion - Merit-based competition with numerous opportunities to earn up to $32,000. All who participate receive at least $4,800. Min. 3.8 GPA & 25 ACT/1130 SAT. Competition held two weekends in February. Cultural Diversity - Minority students with 3.5 GPA or above; must be admitted by Dec. 31, to be considered for $32,000 Cultural Diversity award. Seventy-five will receive $8,000. Must complete scholarship application with essay by Feb. 1. January: ALBION COLLEGE (Albion, MI) Distinguished Scholars Program for students with 3.8 GPA & 32 ACT. Twelve awardees receive up to full tuition and room & board. Finalists selected for a competition in February. ALMA COLLEGE - North Ottawa $1,000 for qualified students in West Michigan area with min. 3.0 GPA and 22 ACT. AQUINAS COLLEGE - Spectrum Scholarship Competition Applicants who meet qualifications may compete for awards of up to full ride. All who qualify receive $7,500 renewable. Must have GPA and ACT results that equal 61 or greater (take away decimal on GPA and add to ACT score.) Competition is held in mid-february. CALVIN COLLEGE Entrada Scholars Program A summer academic achievement program designed to give high school junior and senior minority youth real college experience while they earn college credit. Minimum 3.0 GPA and must show great potential. Entrada students live on campus for 4 weeks during the summer and take courses with current students, coached by a mentor who assists them in the transition to college living and learning. Weekend and evening programming is planned. Cost of the program (tuition, room and board, books, and activities) is covered by a full scholarship. Students need to provide their own transportation and pay a $200 enrollment fee if admitted to the program. Log on to to find a nomination form. CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Leadership) CMU Leader Advancement Scholarship for 40 outstanding seniors who have record of leadership and at least 3.0 GPA. $6,000 over 4 years. Recipients prepare for future leadership roles through academics and experience. Separate application available at FERRIS STATE UNIVERSITY (Big Rapids, MI) Students with merit and/or financial need may apply for awards up to $6,000 per year. Academic criteria begin at 3.0 GPA. GRAND RAPIDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE Various awards: Alumni, Board of Trustee, Distinguished Scholar, Community Leadership, and John Bos Athletic for substantial financial support up to $1,500 with 3.5 GPA. MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY (Chicano/Latino/Hispanic) $1,500 to citizens or permanent residents of U.S. and have at least 2.5 in a college prep program. Application for MSU and the Lideres Comunitarios Scholars Program must be received by Jan. 31. MICHIGAN TECH UNIVERSITY - Civil Engineering Up to 25 $5,000 scholarships awarded to students enrolled in the Civil & Environmental Engineering program. Awards are made competitively based on career objectives, financial need, academic achievement, leadership potential, and diversity. Renewable. MOUNT UNION COLLEGE Presidential Scholarship Competition - Six annually renewable full tuition awards. Contact the college for competition dates. ( ) Trustee Scholarships - $11,000 awards to individuals who demonstrated outstanding performance during the above mentioned competition but were not chosen as recipients of the full tuition awards. Minority Achievement Award Up to $11,000 to minority students. This is a two-tiered award competition. Contact the college for competition dates. ( ) MUSKEGON COMMUNITY COLLEGE An Engineering Transfer Program offers scholarships. Students interested in a career related to Health, Physical Education or Recreation may apply for full or partial tuition scholarships. Min. 2.0 overall GPA and 3.0 in related field courses. Scholarships also available for: Art, English, Food & Travel, Industrial Manufacturing, Life Science, Math/Science, Nursing, Social Studies, Theatre, French/German language. Apply at UNIVERSITY of MICHIGAN Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity - Balanced Man Scholarship $500 scholarship for freshmen male with outstanding record of scholarship, leadership, athletics and service. No obligation to join any organization. Application available at WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY - Freshman Talent Several 4-year scholarships based on audition/portfolio and interview for Art, Dance, Debate/Forensics, Music and Theatre performance and production. Value: One-half tuition. WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY Diversity in Aviation Scholarship Students who apply will be considered for full and partial scholarships. Applicants must be admitted to WMU, US citizens, and have a minimum 2.8 GPA. Committee also considers standardized test scores, high school and community activities, employment experience,
8 commitment to diversity, recommendations, and an essay describing why you think it is important to increase diversity awareness in the field of aviation. Alumni/Faculty Endowed Scholarship of $600 to students majoring in physics or pre-engineering with potential to master classical and modern physics. BOOKER INSTITUTE OF COSMETOLOGY (Hudsonville & Muskegon) Students interested in pursuing a study of cosmetology complete a fairly simple application for awards as part of the June or September programs. CALVIN COLLEGE (Grand Rapids, MI) - Merit Presidential ($5,500 x 4); Dean s ($3,500 x 4 with 3.5 GPA and 25 ACT); Faculty Honors ($2,500 x 4); Honors ($1,500 x 4); Mosaic/Diversity enhancement ($3,500 x 4); Multicultural ($1,200 with 3.0 GPA); Stewardship ($600 with 3.2 GPA). CALVIN COLLEGE (Grand Rapids, MI) Chemistry - $4,000 Dow award for students majoring in chemistry or biochemistry. Financial need not required. Qualified minority students are encouraged to apply as are others interested in a chemistry career. Renewable. CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Mt. Pleasant, MI) Chemistry - Dow Chemical scholarships for chemistry majors who have at least a 3.0 GPA are eligible for $4,000 x 4 years, based on full-time study and U.S. citizenship. No financial need is required. CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Mt. Pleasant, MI) Dept. of Speech & Dramatic Arts - $1,000 renewable awards to students with special talents to participate in Debate, Forensics, or Theatre program. Auditions required for Theatre. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY (Ypsilanti, MI) Students admitted to EMU, who have at least a 3.0 GPA and some leadership activities may qualify for $600 Eagle Leadership Award. Those who attend the Leadership Institute will be offered the award. GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (Allendale, MI) Merit-based awards require Feb. 1 admission to the University and award application. Options include: Presidential of $4,000-6,000 (3.8 GPA and 32 ACT); Excellence of $1,000 (3.5 GPA
9 and 26 ACT); Price Minority of $1,000-3,000 (3.1 GPA and 20 ACT); University Distinguished of $500 (3.1 GPA and 20 ACT); Faculty of $2,000-3,999 (3.5 GPA and 29 ACT); Minority Business Education up to full tuition (3.1 GPA and 20 ACT). GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (Allendale, MI) Price Minority of $1,000-$3,000 for 3.1 GPA and 20 ACT. Minority Business Education up to full tuition with min. 3.1 and 20 ACT. HOPE COLLEGE - Minorities Heritage - African American, Mexican American, Native American or Puerto Rican mainlander with 3.2 GPA and 22 ACT/1030 SAT eligible for $3,000-$7,000 per year. Covenant - Up to 8 full-ride scholarships for 4 years based upon academic record and test scores for outstanding minority students who are active in the multi-cultural life of their community. African American, Mexican American, Native American or Puerto Rican mainlander. HOPE COLLEGE & U OF M BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE PROGRAM Four years full-tuition and room & board at Hope AND then four years full-tuition at U of Michigan medical school. Applicant must be African American, Native American, Mexican American or mainland Puerto Rican and must have strong GPA and ACT/SAT. Recipient would also participate in research lab and receive a stipend. LAKE SUPERIOR STATE UNIVERSITY Philip A. Hart Memorial Scholarship A full tuition scholarship renewable for up to 4 year. Min. 3.0 GPA. Demonstrate interest in public service, as reflected through leadership roles and volunteer activities in school and community. Candidates must submit a formal essay detailing values, goals, and public service experience and should answer the question: How do my leadership and public service roles relate to the goals and ideals of Senator Philip A. Hart? Two letters of recommendation required. Deadline: April 1 Leah Marie Bollin Memorial Award Four $1,000 renewable awards to benefit LSSU students who have epilepsy or a similar seizure disorder. Min. 2.0 GPA. Financial need is a consideration. Must complete a questionnaire and provide three letters of recommendation. Deadline: May 1 OLIVET COLLEGE Academically talented students who apply for admission by Feb. 1 are invited to participate in the Competitive Scholarship Program to determine recipients of awards ranging from $3,000 to full tuition. Other awards for leadership and academic record available ranging from $1,000-6,000. OLIVET COLLEGE COMMUNITY RESPONSIBILITY Up to $6,000 for students who have demonstrated a history of leadership and community servicebased activities. REFORMED BIBLE COLLEGE (Grand Rapids, MI) Presidential Scholarship for seniors with min. 3.8 GPA and 26 ACT. Christian Leadership
10 Scholarship for 3.6 GPA. Must have demonstrated leadership in church, school, or communityrelated services. UNIVERSITY of MICHIGAN Delta Upsilon Fraternity Four $500 scholarships to entering freshmen males who have strong personal qualities and academic qualifications. UNIVERSITY of MICHIGAN Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity The Alumni Association of LCA is offering a $500 academic scholarship to an incoming freshman committed to attend U of M in the fall. Applications are available in the Counseling Office. WESTERN MICHIGAN - DIVERSITY IN AVIATION (Minorities/Females) Up to full tuition awards for students pursuing a career in aviation flight science, aviation maintenance technology and aviation administration. Determination based upon academic record, participation in extra-curricular activities, employment experiences, commitment to diversity and strong interest in aviation. Min. 2.8 GPA; U.S. citizen or permanent resident. March: ALBION COLLEGE Dow Chemistry - Chemistry majors may qualify for $16,000 scholarship. Apply for admission and interview. Financial need not a factor. Krammer Physics Scholarship - $1,000 to qualified students majoring in physics or if physics is part of a dual degree. CALVIN COLLEGE - LAKESHORE ALUMNI Two seniors from Ottawa, Allegan or Muskegon Co., who display leadership, volunteer service to the community, and faith commitment are encouraged to apply for $1,000 Lakeshore Alumni award. Preference given to applicants not receiving another Calvin College scholarship. DEVRY INSTITUTE (Various locations) $1,500 Dean s scholarship for ACT scores of 24 or above, renewable. Two students will be awarded the Presidential full-tuition at each location worth $40,000. Based upon scholastic achievement, community service, extracurricular activities, and essay. EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY - Alumni Association Scholarship Children and grandchildren of EMU may apply for a renewable $1,000 award. Min. 3.2 GPA. GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY (Allendale, MI) Two outstanding seniors from each high school in Ottawa County will be nominated. Minimum 3.2 GPA and 22 ACT. Ideal nominees for the $250 (renewable) Trotter Tri-County award are
11 not recipients of other GVSU merit based scholarships. GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY Eberhard Business - $1,000 distinguished scholarships for entering freshmen with 3.5 GPA and 29 ACT. Renewable and in addition to Entering Freshman Award for Excellence. School of Business - Two $500 Alumni Scholarships for students enrolled in Seidman School of Business. Min. 3.0 GPA and consideration given to ACT scores. NORTHERN MICHIGAN - Honors Program Seniors with minimum 3.5 GPA and 27 ACT/1210 SAT may submit an application to enroll in the Honors Program. Enrollment may qualify student for $1,000 yearly award. WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY - Engineering Scholarships Two engineering scholarships for students entering WMU. Clausing Industrial-$1,000 renewable for Michigan students entering Engineering Mgt. Tech., Engineering Graphics & Design or Mfg. Engineering Tech. IME-$1,500 total for students enrolled in Industrial Engineering, Engineering Mgt. Tech., Engineering Graphics or Mfg. Engineering Tech. Application available in 11/12 Office or online April: CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY - Leadership Camp Three-day leadership camp for students who are planning to attend CMU. Students who are involved in school and community activities are encouraged to apply. $50 conference fee. WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY JOHN C.
