4 JERSEY STRONG In its only dual action so far this month, Lehigh won 15 of 20 bouts in a pair of road wins over Rider and Princeton, December 5 in New Jersey. The Mountain Hawks began their day with a win over Rider in Lawrenceville, before heading to Princeton where they handed the then-25th-ranked Tigers a 34-3 loss. Lehigh posted seven bonus point wins on the day, while its five losses came by a combined eight points. The first four wrestlers in Lehigh s lineup - Darian Cruz, Mason Beckman, Randy Cruz and Laike Gardner all went 2-0 on the day as did Nathaniel Brown. Randy Cruz led the way with a major decision win at Rider and then pinned Princeton s Jordan Laster in a rematch of the EIWA finals. Lehigh s heavyweights also went 2-0 on the day with Max Wessell picking up a major decision win at Rider and Doug Vollaro earning a victory at Princeton in his season debut. DOUG DEBUTS Working his way back from a knee injury suffered in the EIWA third place match, junior heavyweight Doug Vollaro was slated to make his season debut at the Nittany Lion Open, but was pushed into action a day earlier against Princeton, when Max Wessell suffered a cut that required stitches earlier in the day against Rider. Vollaro capped a 34-3 Lehigh win over the Tigers with a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Ray O Donnell. The next day Vollaro won three matches at the Nittany Lion Open before defaulting out of the tournament. Vollaro qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season but was unable to compete due to his injury. He and Max Wessell give the Mountain Hawks a formidable pair of heavyweights who have both previously qualified for the NCAA Championships. Despite just three career bonus wins, Vollaro owns a career record. WELCOME BACK Lehigh welcomes All-American Darian Cruz back into the lineup after Cruz deferred his eligibility last season. Cruz finished seventh at 125 as a true freshman in 2014, becoming Lehigh s first true freshman All-American since Cruz went 22-3 in his deferred year with four open tournament titles. In the last two seasons, Mason Beckman and Nathaniel Brown earned All-America honors in the season immediately following their deferred year. Randy Cruz sandwiched EIWA titles around his deferred year as well. Also returning to varsity competition following a deferred year is junior Ben Haas, who represented Lehigh at 165 in the 2013 and 2014 EIWA tournaments and began the season at 174 and is now challenging at 197. TO THE MAX Senior heavyweight Max Wessell is out to a 7-1 start subbing for Doug Vollaro, who just returned to competition at Princeton while recovering from injury. Injuries have slowed Wessell, now a sixth-year senior, throughout his career, but the 2014 NCAA qualifier posted his second career top 10 win with a 10-9 decision over then-no. 6 Michael Kroells of Minnesota at the Northeast Duals. Wessell has won his last three bouts overall and owns two wins over ranked wrestlers plus a pin over Edinboro s Billy Miller at the 5:35 mark that capped a 36-6 Lehigh victory. No. 13 LEHIGH AT No. 8 OKLAHOMA PAGE FOUR MASON MAKES HIS MARK Mason Beckman enters his senior senior as a two-time All-American looking to improve on back-to-back sixth place finishes at 133 at the NCAA Championships. Beckman led the Mountain Hawks with 30 victories last season and followed a suprising first round NCAA loss with five straight wins to reach the podium. The Transfer, Pa. native owns a career record and picked up his first two victories of the season with wins at Rider and Princeton. He is now a three-time participant in the NWCA All-Star Classic, and a two-time member of the NWCA All-Academic Team. BROWN DOING WELL FOR LEHIGH Nathaniel Brown moved up to 184 following his sophomore season and the move paid off for the Lewisburg native, who reached the NCAA finals and earned his first All-America medal last season. Brown finished his junior season at 29-6 with the six losses coming against just two opponents. He also posted the first six wins by fall of his Lehigh career. Brown is now a three-time NCAA qualifier and is ranked in the top six in the polls following a 6-1 start to his senior campaign. He owns a career record. Three of Brown s victories so far this season have come via technical fall, and he picked up his first pin of the year at Rider. MITCH BOUNCES BACK TO REACH PODIUM Despite moving up to a new weight class and missing Lehigh s first eight duals while recovering from offseason surgery, Mitch Minotti s sophomore season ended with his second All-America honor after finishing eighth at 157. Minotti reached the NCAA semifinals at 149 as a freshman, finishing in sixth place. After winning 25 matches and a Midlands title as a freshman, Minotti went 19-8 as a sophomore and is also a two-time member of the NWCA All-Academic Team. Minotti is off to a 5-2 start this season with both losses coming in overtime. CONGRATS TO THE GRADS Lehigh s lineup features a trio of fifth year seniors who earned their undergraduate degrees in May and are now enrolled in graduate school. All-Americans Mason Beckman and Nathaniel Brown capped successful seasons on the mat by earning degrees in supply chain management and behavioral neuroscience, respectively. John Bolich went 15-3 overall and 6-0 in duals and earned his degree in industrial and systems engineering. Beckman and Bolich are both enrolled in graduate programs, majoring in technical entrepreneurship, while Brown s graduate major is health care systems engineering. 5 RANDY IS DANDY Randy Cruz deferred his eligibility in while moving up from 133 to 141, a move that paid off when he won his second career EIWA championship last March. In 2013, Cruz became Lehigh s first true freshman EIWA champion since Cruz has now won titles in his first two years of eligibility and last season fell one win short of earning All-America honors. Cruz owns a career record that includes 16 wins by fall. He did not compete in the Bucknell dual, but went 5-0 to win the 141-pound title at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open. He was the only Mountain Hawk to post two bonus wins in Lehigh s duals at Rider and Princeton. With Cruz s triumph at 141 last year, Lehigh wrestlers have won at least one individual EIWA title in 16 consecutive tournaments. A FRESH START Two Lehigh freshmen posted victories in their varsity dual debuts against Bucknell. Cortlandt Schuyler put Lehigh on the board with a first period pin of Tyler Smith. Preisch won a solid 5-1 decision over Robert Schlitt at 165. Schuyler and Preisch both deferred their eligibility last season. Schuyler went competing unattached at 141 while Preisch was an impressive 16-5 at 165. The Bucknell dual marked the first time since that Lehigh opened its season without a true freshman in the lineup. BEEN THROUGH IT BEFORE For the last several years, Lehigh has been classified as a young team, but those young Mountain Hawks have developed into a deep and experienced team. Lehigh s roster features four returning All-Americans (Darian Cruz, Mason Beckman, Mitch Minotti and Nathaniel Brown), three EIWA champions (Beckman, Brown and Randy Cruz), and a total of 11 wrestlers who have qualified for the NCAA Championships at least once. In addition to the returning All-Americans and EIWA champions, Lehigh s returning NCAA qualifiers include seniors John Bolich and Max Wessell, juniors Laike Gardner, Elliot Riddick and Doug Vollaro and sophomore Scott Parker. FAMILY TIES Lehigh s roster features several wrestlers with noteworthy family connections. The Mountain Hawks have one set of brothers in Randy and Darian Cruz. Freshman Cortlandt Schuyler s father Pete 83 won two EIWA titles for Lehigh and earned All-America honors with a third place finish at 134 in Max Wessell s brother Axel was recruited to wrestle for the brown and white, but has been unable to compete due to injuries. FROM GOLDEN HAWKS TO MOUNTAIN HAWKS Three Lehigh wrestlers didn t have to venture far from home to wrestle collegiately for the Brown and White. Fourth-year juniors Randy Cruz and Elliot Riddick and third-year sophomore Darian Cruz all wrestled for nearby Bethlehem Catholic High School, the same program that produced Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. In 2013, Randy Cruz became Lehigh s first true freshman EIWA Champion since Jim Reilly in 1980 and is now a two-time EIWA champion, while in 2014 Darian Cruz became Lehigh s first true freshman All-American since Add in juniors Mitch Minotti (Easton) and Matt Bonshak (Whitehall) and freshman Charlie Sell (Bangor) and the Mountain Hawks roster features six grapplers from the wrestling-rich Lehigh Valley. No. 13 LEHIGH AT No. 8 OKLAHOMA PAGE FIVE SOMERS STEPS UP Despite being the third man up at 133 for the Mountain Hawks, sophomore Dean Somers delivered Lehigh s first dual win of the season at the weight with an impressive 12-0 major decision of Edinboro s Tony Recco. Sophomore Jonathan Mele initially stepped in for All-American Mason Beckman but was injured in a loss against Pitt opening the door for Somers to make just his second career dual meet appearance, and the first as his natural weight class. Somers now owns a 7-6 career record. BEGINNING WITH PINNING In his first varsity action, freshman Cortlandt Schuyler pinned Bucknell NCAA qualifier Tyler Smith in just 1:06 to pull the Mountain Hawks even with the Bison after three bouts. In doing so, Schuyler became the first Lehigh wrestler to win by fall in his varsity debut since Eric Hess pinned Binghamton Vince Grella in 2:18 in the season-opener. Two-years prior, Austin Meys debuted with a second period pin of Drexel s Justin Wieller. Schuyler followed up his Bucknell performance with a 6-2 showing at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open that including two more wins by fall. ACADEMIC SUCCESS Lehigh enjoyed another strong season on the mats, but the Mountain Hawks were equally impressive in the classroom. Four Mountain Hawks were named to the NWCA All-Academic Team: All-Americans Mason Beckman and Mitch Minotti, plus Doug Vollaro and graduate student Santiago Martinez. Beckman and Minotti are now two-time All-Academic Team selections. Beckman earned his degree in supply chain management and is now enrolled in a technical entrepreneurship graduate program. Minotti carries a 3.36 GPA in finance, while Vollaro owns a 3.2 in industrial and systems engineering. ALL-STARS SHINE BRIGHT Lehigh had three wrestlers compete at the 50th NWCA All-Star Classic, November 1 on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Seniors Mason Beckman and Nathaniel Brown and junior Mitch Minotti represented the Mountain Hawks in the season-opening exhibition. Beckman made his third consecutive All-Star Classic appearance but came up on the short end of a 4-1 sudden victory decision against Michigan s Rossi Bruno. As part of an experimental rule, all takedowns in the NWCA All-Star Classic were worth three points instead of the traditional two. Minotti also needed overtime but managed to post Lehigh s lone win on the evening as he pinned South Dakota State s Cody Pack from the neutral position at 7:45. Brown also found himself in overtime and fell victim to a counter takedown by Blake Stauffer of Arizona State, who won 4-1 in sudden victory. Lehigh s three All-Star Classic participants matched a school record set previously in 1980 and The Mountain Hawks have had at least one wrestler compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic in four straight years. Lehigh wrestlers now own a career record in the NWCA All-Star Classic.

6 SCOUTING THE SOONERS Oklahoma started the season strong with wins in its first five duals and a fourth place finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, but the eighth-ranked Sooners are looking to bounce back from a 37-3 home loss to rival Oklahoma State in the first of two Bedlam duals this season. The Sooners opened their season at the Northeast Duals with wins over Nassau Community College, Army West Point and Rutgers. Oklahoma also has defeated Northern Colorado and won at Michigan. In last week s loss to Oklahoma State, the visiting Cowboys won the first eight bouts before Brad Johnson helped avoid the shutout with a win at 197. Six Sooners appear in the latest InterMat rankings, led by senior Cody Brewer, the defending National Champion at 133, who is currently ranked third after losses in his last two bouts. Also ranked in the top ten for Oklahoma are heavyweight Ross Larson (No. 6) and 165-pounder Clark Glass (No. 9). Brewer finished second in Las Vegas while Larson took third and Glass fourth. Davion Jeffries (149) and Ryan Millhof (125) also placed, finishing sixth in their respective weight classes. Mark Cody is in his fifth season as Oklahoma s head coach. Lehigh s 11 probable starters for this weekend include nine wrestlers from Pennsylvania and one each from New York and Colorado. Junior heavyweight Doug Vollaro wrestled in high school in Florida, but now claims Springfield, Massachusetts as his hometown. ON DECK... After a short break for the Christmas holiday, Lehigh will kick off 2016 when the Mountain Hawks return to the Southern Scuffle, Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Last year, Lehigh competed at the Scuffle for the first time since December 2006 and finished seventh, with four place-winners, including Mason Beckman, Nathaniel Brown who both placed third in their respective weight classes. While the Mountain Hawks head to Tennessee, Beckman and Brown are expected to forego the Southern Scuffle to compete in the Midlands Championships, Dec in Evanston, Ill. 9 No. 13 LEHIGH AT No. 8 OKLAHOMA PAGE NINE LAWRENCE WHITE HEAD COACH - PAT SANTORO He played an integral role in the renaissance of the Lehigh wrestling program in the late 1990s. In his first year back, he led the Mountain Hawks to a school-record 23 dual wins, a second place EIWA finish, and was named EIWA Coach of the Year. Now entering his eighth season as head coach, Bethlehem native Pat Santoro looks to return the Mountain Hawks to the top of the EIWA, while molding Lehigh into a perennial top ten team and national championship contender. Santoro was hired in April, 2008 as just the eighth head coach in program history. He holds the title as the Lawrence White Head Coach of Wrestling at Lehigh. A two-time EIWA Coach of the Year, Santoro has mentored one NCAA Champion at Lehigh. He has led ten individuals to a total of 12 EIWA titles, while guiding eight men to 15 total All-American medals. Santoro enters the season with a dual meet record of at Lehigh. He earned his 100th victory as Lehigh s head coach when the Mountain Hawks upset eventual NCAA Champion Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the NWCA National Duals in February The win over Ohio State was one of the highlights of a season that saw the Mountain Hawks go 14-6 in duals. Lehigh s lineup featured just two seniors but a strong core of sophomores and juniors continued to impress. Randy Cruz won his second EIWA title to help lead Lehigh to a second place conference finish. Nathaniel Brown reached the NCAA finals at 184 while Mason Beckman and Mitch Minotti earned All-America honors for the second straight year. As a team the Mountain Hawks finished 13th at the NCAA Championships. Santoro led the Lehigh squad through the ups and downs that come with a young roster. The young Mountain Hawks soared at the NCAA Championships with freshmen Darian Cruz and Minotti joining Beckman in earning All-America honors. Cruz and Minotti were Lehigh s first freshmen All-Americans since 2003 with Cruz also becoming Lehigh s first true freshman All-American in 34 years. In , Santoro worked with a young team that battled through injuries and a string of bad luck and helped guide the Mountain Hawks to ten dual meet wins. Three individuals won individual EIWA titles including Randy Cruz, who became Lehigh s first true freshman EIWA champion since Under Santoro s guidance Robert Hamlin became Lehigh s 16th three-time All-American and reached the NCAA finals for the second time in his career. Lehigh continued to make strides in The Mountain Hawks finished eighth at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year and once again had two finalists in Zack Rey and Brandon Hatchett. Lehigh crowned four All-Americans, its most since having five in Robert Hamlin won his second straight EIWA title, while Hatchett won his first. Shane Welsh was the surprise of the tournament, capturing the title at 149 from the No. 6 seed. Lehigh s three championships were its most since For his efforts, Santoro was voted EIWA Coach of the Year for the second time. In Santoro s third season Lehigh returned to the top ten at the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2006 with an eighth place finish. The Mountain Hawks crowned three All-Americans for the first time in five years and placed two wrestlers in the NCAA finals for the first time since Heavyweight Zack Rey became Santoro s first national champion and the 27th in Lehigh history. In , Santoro guided the Mountain Hawks to a dual record and a top-ten national dual meet ranking for most of the season. In March, Santoro guided Rey to an EIWA title and All-America honors with a third place finish at the NCAA Championships, the program s first All-American in four years. Santoro produced an immediate turnaround in his first season back in Bethlehem. The Mountain Hawks 23-1 dual mark surpassed the school record for dual wins in a season. Santoro guided Seth Ciasulli and David Craig to individual EIWA Championships, while the Mountain Hawks qualified seven wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. Before returning to Lehigh, Santoro spent the previous five years as the head coach at the University of Maryland where he helped resurrect the Terrapins program, which in 2008 captured its first ACC title in 35 years; a feat which earned Santoro ACC Coach of the Year honors. Prior to his stint at Maryland Santoro served as an assistant at Lehigh for nine years, including eight seasons on Greg Strobel s staff. During his initial tenure, Santoro was part of some of the most successful teams in school history. In 2003, Santoro was named the national Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, after helping guide Lehigh to its third EIWA title in four years, and a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships. Before coming to Lehigh, Santoro spent the season as an assistant coach at Duquesne and the two seasons prior to that as a graduate assistant at Penn State. Regarded throughout the community as one of the sport s top teachers and recruiters, Santoro has enjoyed success at every level of wrestling, both as a coach and a competitor. After wrestling for Bethlehem Catholic High School and taking a post-graduate year at Blair Academy, Santoro wrestled collegiately at Pittsburgh, where he became the Panthers only four-time All-America while capturing national titles in 1988 and 1989 at 142 pounds. A three-time EWL Champion, he was the recipient of Pittsburgh s Golden Panther Award in 1989, recognizing the outstanding athlete of the year. On the international scene, Santoro was a four time member of the U.S. National Team between 1995 and 1999 and served as an alternate for the 1996 Olympic Team and the 1999 World Team. Santoro earned his bachelor s degree in psychology from Pittsburgh in In addition to his Bethlehem roots and previous coaching stint at Lehigh, Santoro s father, uncle and brother all wrestled for the Brown and White. Santoro and his wife Julie have a daughter, Leah and a son, Mack.
