General Safety Rules WARNING! Read all instructions Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury. The term power tool in all of the warnings listed below refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS Work area safety a. b. c. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. Electrical safety a. b. c. d. e. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with grounded power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. Personal safety a. b. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. Page 4
c. d. e. f. g. Wear leather work gloves only. Cloth or knit gloves can get caught by rotating cable and tangled. Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before plugging in. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught in moving parts. 4. Power tool use and care a. b. c. d. e. f. g. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tools operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of power tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation. Page 5
5. Service a. Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. Specific Safety Rules Maintain labels and nameplates on the tool. These carry important safety information. If unreadable or missing, contact Harbor Freight Tools for a replacement. Avoid unintentional starting. Prepare to begin work before turning on the tool. Do not leave the tool unattended when it is plugged into an electrical outlet. Turn off the tool, and unplug it from its electrical outlet before leaving. This product is not a toy. Keep it out of reach of children. Avoid electrical shock. Do not operate if Drain Cleaner, operator, or power cord is in standing water. Do not operate the Drain Cleaner with any of the guards removed. Do not overstress the cable. Keep gloved hand on the cable for better control when machine is running. If the cable encounters an obstruction, it could stress the cable and cause equipment to twist, kink, or break, resulting in serious personal injury and/or property damage. Position Drain Cleaner within two feet of drain opening. Greater distances may cause cable to twist or kink. The motor rotation should only be reversed when getting around tight bends in the pipe or when pulling the cable off an obstruction. Forcing the Cable down while rotation is reversed can result in Cable damage. Drum must be fully stopped, before changing direction. Keep hands clear of rotating Drum and Feed Pipe. Use leather work gloves only. Cloth or knit gloves can get tangled in rotating cable. People with pacemakers should consult their physician(s) before use. Electromagnetic fields in close proximity to heart pacemaker could cause pacemaker interference or pacemaker failure. In addition, people with pacemakers should: Avoid operating alone. Do not use with power switch locked on. Properly maintain and inspect to avoid electrical shock. Page 6
Any power cord must be properly grounded. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) should also be implemented it prevents sustained electrical shock Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities, contains chemicals known [to the State of California] to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are: Lead from lead-based paints Crystalline silica from bricks and cement or other masonry products Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated lumber Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles. (California Health & Safety Code , et seq.) The warnings, precautions, and instructions discussed in this instruction manual cannot cover all possible conditions and situations that may occur. It must be understood by the operator that common sense and caution are factors which cannot be built into this product, but must be supplied by the operator. Save these instructions. Grounding WARNING Improperly connecting the grounding wire can result in electric shock. Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. Do not modify the power cord plug provided with the tool. Never remove the grounding prong from the plug. Do not use the tool if the power cord or plug is damaged. If damaged, have it repaired by a service facility before use. If the plug will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. Grounded Tools: Tools with Three Prong Plugs Tools marked with Grounding Required have a three wire cord and three prong grounding plug. The plug must be connected to a properly grounded outlet. If the tool should electrically malfunction or break down, grounding provides a low resistance path to carry electricity away from the user, reducing the risk of electric shock. (See 3-Prong Plug and Outlet.) Page 7
The grounding prong in the plug is connected through the green wire inside the cord to the grounding system in the tool. The green wire in the cord must be the only wire connected to the tool s grounding system and must never be attached to an electrically live terminal. (See 3-Prong Plug and Outlet.) The tool must be plugged into an appropriate outlet, properly installed and grounded in accordance with all codes and ordinances. The plug and outlet should look like those in the following illustration. (See 3-Prong Plug and Outlet.) 3-Prong Plug and Outlet Outlets for 2-Prong Plug Double Insulated Tools: Tools with Two Prong Plugs Tools marked Double Insulated do not require grounding. They have a special double insulation system which satisfies OSHA requirements and complies with the applicable standards of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., the Canadian Standard Association, and the National Electrical Code. (See Outlets for 2-Prong Plug.) Double insulated tools may be used in either of the 120 volt outlets shown in the preceding illustration. (See Outlets for 2-Prong Plug.) Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is built directly into the Power Cord (15), due to the risk of electrical shock when operating the Drain Cleaner, and its proximity to water and ground. The GFCI provides additional protection from the risk of electrical shock. Note: Due to constant improvements, GFCI may appear different. Warning. Read all precautions and instructions provided with the GFCI device. Page
Make sure that the Motor Direction Switch is in the Off position before plugging in the Drain Cleaner. Plug the GFCI Power Plug into a grounded, 120 VAC electrical outlet. Press the TEST button, then press the RESET button. The GFCI indicator should show in the window. If the indicator is not red, try plugging the Power Cord into a different electrical outlet and repeat the steps. If the same results occur, have the Power Cord inspected by a licensed electrician. 12 Operating Instructions Read the entire Important Safety Information section at the beginning of this manual including all text under subheadings therein before set up or use of this product. The following sections describe the operational components and controls of the Drain Cleaner, as well as its operation and application. Operational Components and Controls Warning: Do not allow your hands, clothing or any other object to become caught between the belt and the drum. Serious personal injury could result. The main operational components of the Drain Cleaner tool are the Motor (7), with its Motor Direction Switch (5), Foot Switch (11) and the Feed Unit (44) with its direction controller. The Motor (7) is connected to the Drum (55) by the Drive Belt (2). When the Motor is turned on, it turns the Drum, causing the Cable (56) to rotate. Rotation of the Cable helps it to move through bends or turns in the drain line, and also to drill through soft clogs, or entangle harder clogs for removal. (See photo below, left.) The Motor Direction Switch (5) has three settings; FORWARD, REVERSE and OFF. FORWARD will rotate Cable clockwise (viewed from machine rear), causing it to bore into or entangle obstructions. REVERSE will rotate the Cable counterclockwise (viewed from machine rear), causing it to unwind from obstructions. (See photo below, right.) Motor (7), Drum (55) and Drive Belt (2) Motor Direction Switch (5) The Motor is controlled by the Foot Switch. Whenever the Motor Direction Switch is in the FORWARD or REVERSE position, stepping on the Foot Switch will cause the motor to run and the Drum to turn. Page 12
NOTE: The Foot Switch is in a rubber boot to make it water-resistant. (See photo below, left.) Foot Switch (11): Press On, release Off Tension Knob (44-13) Direction Lever (44-16): Pull Up for forward direction; Center is neutral; Push down for reverse direction. The rotating Drum causes the Cable (56) to rotate along it s axis like a drill. The Direction Lever (44-16) on the Cable Feed Unit (44) controls the motion of the Cable forward into the drain or back into the Drum. The feed tension is controlled by the Tension Knob (44-13). See photo above, right. The star knob must be loosened before changing the position of the Direction Lever, and then retightened after the adjustment. Drain Cleaning CAUTION: Do not use this drain cleaner on drain lines smaller than two inches or on lines that may be fragile. Damage may occur to equipment or pipes. 4. Place the Drain Cleaner within two feet of the drain pipe inlet. With the Direction Lever (44-16) in the neutral position and with the Tension Knob (44-13) backed off and not pressing against the cable, pull the Cable (56) from the Drum (55) and begin feeding it into the drain pipe inlet as far as it will go manually. (This makes it easier to pull the cable out). Verify that the Motor Direction Switch (5) is in the Off position, then plug the GFCI Equipped Power Cord (12) into an electrical outlet. Press the Reset button on the GFCI. If possible, keep a small steady stream of water running into the drain to help lubricate the cutter and wash debris down the drain. WARNING! Do not allow water to accumulate in the work area. Water accumulation increases the risk of electric shock or slipping, in addition to causing property damage. Drop cloths, GFCI-protected wet vacuum cleaners, basins, or other methods (none included) may be used to help contain and dispose of water. A certain amount of water will almost always be present when cleaning a drain Page 13
With the Motor Direction Switch in the Forward position: Pull the Direction Lever (44-16) up (FORWARD) to feed Cable out of the Drum. Pushing the Direction Lever down (REVERSE) will retract the Cable back into the Drum. When the lever is in the middle (neutral) position, the Cable will spin in place. Move the Motor Direction Switch to the Forward position. Turn the Star Knob (16), (located at the top of the Cable Feed Unit), clockwise until the feed roller touches the Cable, then one quarter additional turn. Do not overtighten or excessive cable wear will occur. Avoid damage to Cable or cutting tool. Do not use the Motor Direction Switch in the Reverse position to pull the Cable out of the drain pipe. Always leave the Motor Direction Switch in the Forward position, whether feeding the Cable into the drain pipe, or pulling it out. Use Reverse position only to release the Cable if it should become caught in the drain pipe line, and only for a few seconds. Wearing a leather glove, place your hand on the Guide Spring, press the Foot Switch (11) to start the forward Cable movement. Feed the Cable into the drain pipe inlet. Run hot water down the drain pipe during and after the removal of the stoppage to wash away debris. When Cable starts to bend, twist or whip When Cable has trouble getting around tight bends in drain pipe When Cable reaches stoppage in drain pipe Operating Tips Too much slack in Cable or cutter tool caught in stoppage. Release Foot Switch, press Direction Lever down to temporarily reverse cable feed direction, and rewind to relieve twist on Cable. Pull direction lever up (FORWARD) to continue. Press Motor Direction Switch (5) to Reverse while applying steady pressure to Cable. Keep in mind that this will reverse auto feed operation as well. Do for only a few seconds to pass bend. More time could cause tangling or kinks in the Drum. If problem persists, Cable is too large for pipe. Switch to a drain cleaner with a smaller cable Do not force Cable through stoppage. Press Direction Lever to neutral position. Allow Cable to progress forward slowly, chewing stoppage. Slow forward movement reduces stress on Cable, while cleaning better. Try back and forth Cable movement, using the Direction Lever (44-16). 10. After the drain pipe has been opened, return the cable to the Drum by moving the Direction Lever (44-16) to the reverse direction. Press the Motor Direction Switch (5) to the Forward position. Press on the Foot Switch (11) to recoil Cable. When the cutter head is near the drain pipe inlet, release Foot Switch to stop Drum rotation. Warning! Never remove the Cable and cutter tool from the drain pipe inlet while Cable is rotating. Cable could lash out, causing serious injury and/or property damage. Page 14
1 1 If necessary, replace the cutter tool with the U Cutter or Side Cutter, and re-enter the drain pipe to clean the pipe walls. When the job is complete, unplug the Power Cord from the electrical outlet and coil it. Spray the Drain Cleaner down with clean water. Store the Drain Cleaner and cutter tools in clean and dry location out of the reach of children. Page 15
Maintenance And Servicing WARNING Risk of serious personal injury from accidental starting or electric shock. Turn the Power Switch of the tool to its OFF position and unplug the tool from the electrical outlet before performing any inspection, maintenance, or cleaning procedures. Damaged equipment can fail, causing serious personal injury. Do not use damaged equipment. If abnormal noise or vibration occurs, have the problem corrected before further use. Automatic Feed Maintenance Keep the auto feed mechanism free of excessive soil and grit. Flush the unit with fresh water, followed by a light oiling of the moving parts after each use. No disassembly is normally required. Failure to feed during operation can usually be traced to the build up of soil and grit. Over time, dirt can harden enough to stop roller rotation. Flushing with water, followed by liberal oiling can usually restore function. If disassembly is required, proceed as follows: Remove the four Hex Bolts (44-21) that hold the Front Cap (44-19) and internal roller to the Case (44-11). Slide the front Cap out of the Case and inspect and clean the roller as described above. Remove the four bolts that hold the End Cap (44-7) and Guide Rollers (3) to the Case (44-11). Slide the End Cap out of the Case and inspect and clean the three guide rollers as described above. While the Case is open, thoroughly clean and oil all parts and then reassemble in reverse order. Cleaning, maintenance, and lubrication BEFORE EACH USE, inspect the general condition of the tool. Check for loose screws, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, damaged electrical wiring, and any other condition that may affect its safe operation. After Use, spray the Cable and attachments down with clean water and wipe external surfaces of the tool with clean, moist cloth. WARNING! If the supply cord or GFCI device of this power tool is damaged, it must be replaced only by a qualified service technician. Page 16
