Sarah s Welcome You may have heard in recent months about the levels of underinsurance that exist in New Zealand. This is as a result of a new research report that has found there are disturbingly low levels of cover, awareness, and understanding among New Zealanders when it comes to life insurance. As a OnePath customer you have already made the smart move to protect yourself and your family, but insured or not, our article on page 4 will help you to determine whether you have the level of protection you need. Of course, nothing demonstrates the true value of insurance more than hearing from someone who has experienced a traumatic event in their life and how insurance (or in some cases lack of it) has changed their lifestyle, health and financial future. We are so thankful to customers, like Susan (see page 8), who are willing to share their story. When it comes to protecting the things we value most, not all of us can afford to have the level of insurance that we would like, so we have to prioritise what s most important. The same goes for everyday spending. If you ve been feeling the squeeze lately, you might find our budgeting advice on page 12 useful. We make suggestions as to where you can save so you can afford to splurge once in a while. Also check out our tips on page 24 for options to help you manage the affordability of your insurance premiums. We get a lot of feedback from customers who love our regular features on health and wellbeing, so in this edition we have included an article on page 16 about superfoods humble, everyday vegetables with hidden powers that will help you fight off illness this winter and beyond. Lastly, we always encourage you to regularly review your cover with your adviser, to ensure it s keeping pace with your lifestyle. Often, minor adjustments to your existing policy are all that is required to bring it into line with your personal situation, and on some occasions it can make sense to completely replace your policy. If you are thinking about making changes to your policy there are some important things you need to know. I strongly urge you to read our article on page 20 so you can make an informed decision. Have a read. Have a think. And recognise your value. 4 How much is enough? After all sick leave and annual leave have run out, it would take only one month for 55% of Kiwi households to be unable to pay all their expenses and maintain their lifestyle. Are you one of these households? Here we explore underinsurance in New Zealand and help you to determine whether you have the protection you need. You may be surprised to learn that New Zealanders are underinsured by $650 billion. This is according to a recent research project commissioned by the Financial Services Council.* The research has clearly demonstrated the disturbingly low levels of cover, awareness, and understanding among New Zealanders when it comes to life insurance. Level of cover vs needs According to the research, there is no indication that there is a national crisis with take-up rates of life insurance ownership, however levels of life cover are often poorly chosen, with little relationship between ideal cover and actual cover. For example, couples tend to insure both spouses for the same or similar amounts, despite sharply differing actual insurance needs. The biggest issue within New Zealand seems to be the low levels of ownership of personal insurance around permanent disability, like total disablement cover or long-term income protection cover. Most families are highly vulnerable to medium or long-term disability. The research identified some key reasons why New Zealanders are underinsured. Here we address some misconceptions and separate fact from fiction. It s too expensive People often fail to see the value for money of insurance cover because they are paying for an intangible and uncertain future benefit. When you ve got so many things to spend your money on, insurance may seem like an unnecessary luxury. But think about some of the costs associated with sickness and injury like hospital and medical costs. Then think of the lost income that could also result from months, or even years, out of the workforce. It helps put the cost of insurance in perspective. It won t happen to me Lack of insurance often stems from the overwhelming optimism Kiwis have about the likelihood of bad things happening, be they health setbacks or significant financial problems. Everybody knows someone who s experienced a serious illness or accident. You know it happens. And it can happen at any age. Reasons for underinsurance Insurance companies are the bad guys Many people are sceptical that the end benefit will actually be paid, some citing the reputation of insurance companies for hiding behind obscure definitions and exclusions. First and foremost, we are in the business of paying claims. At OnePath we are committed to doing what s right for our customers, which means we look for ways to pay claims not how to get out of paying claims. I ll be covered some other way The possibility of financial assistance from the Government and reliance on the public health system is another reason why people think they don t need insurance. While some level of assistance is usually available, it is often insufficient to cover the associated costs. For example, ACC pays for accidents only, not illness. When it comes to health care, the public health system is a good provider of emergency services, but for elective and non-urgent surgery people can find themselves on a waiting list for several months or even years. Overinsurance On the flip side, the research found that some wealthier and older households hold excessive cover, with sums insured not decreasing with age. With lower levels of financial vulnerability such as no dependent children or income to protect, and higher cash reserves such as a KiwiSaver account or other retirement savings, a reduction in cover can be appropriate in some cases. Just like a game of chess, it's important to have the right strategy in place to protect what you value most. Now is a good time to check in and consider whether your insurance cover is right for your circumstances. *Massey University, Exploring Underinsurance within New Zealand,

How do you know if you have the protection you need? These days it s important to consider a combination of life and living insurances to ensure you are protected against any of life s challenges that may come your way. The aim is to find a good balance between cost and cover, so it s affordable and meets your specific needs your adviser can help you to achieve the right balance. You may also find the table below useful to self-check you insurances. It will help to remind you of why you have one or a number of the below covers in place as well as identify any gaps that my exist in your current policy. Ask yourseself Things to think abouout The facts If I was to die, would my family have enough money to support themselves for a period of time? If an illness or injury meant I was unable to work for a few months, do I have enough savings to pay for my day-to-day expenses power, food, mortgage repayments etc.? If I was diagnosed with a serious illness, would I have enough money to support my family while I receive treatment and recover? Life Cover provides a lump sum in the event of death or terminal illness. It could be used to repay debt, replace lost income or to become mortgage free. Income Cover provides a monthly payment so you can continue to meet your financial commitments. Trauma Cover provides a lump-sum payment if you experience a serious medical condition. You can use this to replace a lost income, or pay for medical treatment or any additional help you may need it s up to you. One in eight males and one in 12 females over the age of 30 will die before they reach age Over the past five years, one in seven households has experienced a serious illness resulting in an inability to work for three months or more. 2 Two out of five males and one out of four females over the age of 30 will suffer a critical illness before they reach Most people don t think twice when it comes to insuring their car, house and contents, but they often neglect to insure their most valuable possession of all their ability to earn. If an illness or injury meant I could never work again, would my family suffer financial hardship? If I get sick am I prepared to join the public hospital waiting list or could I afford to pay for private treatment? Business owners What would happen to my business if illness or injury meant I was unable to work? What if it was one of my business partners? Complete Disablement Cover provides a lump-sum payment in the event you become completely disabled. It will give you the financial freedom to make your own decisions, whether it s seeking alternative treatment, replacing a lost income or paying for medical costs. Major Medical Cover provides for the reimbursement of major medical expenses and allows you to gain immediate access to the best care available. Business Extra and Business Assurance provide a contingency plan for your business keeping it healthy should you or one of your key people become sick, disabled or die. Only 20% of households would cope for more than 12 months with paying their household expenses and maintaining their lifestyle if a serious illness meant the primary earner was unable to work. 4 Many private hospital treatments can cost upwards of $20,000 (e.g. radiation therapy, one course treatment $15,000 - $27,000, total hip replacement $18,000 - $22,000). 5 Ill health and lack of health insurance is one of the four main causes of people going bankrupt. 6 Read our real life story on page 8, which demonstrates why it s important to have the right level of insurance protection for your needs. Are you thinking that it s time for an insurance review? 6 Susan s Story Susan * learnt about the importance of having insurance in the hardest way possible when her husband unexpectedly passed away in In her mid-30s and with three young children, Susan received a small life insurance payment and faced an uncertain future. Our insurance policies hadn t been updated for over 10 years so they didn t adequately cover us for our situation at that time, Susan explains. A good friend, who was also an insurance adviser, sat down with Susan to review her insurance policies and convinced her that she needed to protect her income, particularly now she was a solo mum and the breadwinner for the family. I had already learnt that it was important to have insurance to provide for my children if I died, but I had never been sick or suffered an injury, so my instant reaction was no way, I m not wasting that much money. My adviser was adamant and pointed out that I still needed to be able to provide for my children if I became unwell or suffered an accident. He showed me what I might receive from ACC and/or a sickness benefit, and I realised it was not enough, so I reluctantly agreed. One year later Susan was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. When Susan approached OnePath to make her claim she admitted to feeling anxious because of the general lack of understanding about her illness. However, when her claim was accepted, she was hugely relieved and able to focus on her recovery without having to worry about her finances. And with the support of her OnePath Claims Consultant, Susan has made huge progress towards getting back to work as soon as possible. I have always been apprehensive about insurance companies and particularly with my illness I had thought it would be a struggle. In fact, it s been the exact opposite and I ve felt supported the whole way through. Susan is currently working three days a week and hoping to get back to four days a week if everything continues to go well. She says that if she hadn t had the security of her regular insurance payments she would have lost her house, and her children would have suffered through a drastic change in their lifestyle. After everything she s been through Susan now believes that insurance is an absolute must particularly if you are the sole breadwinner. After the loss of her husband and her illness she regularly reviews all of her insurances to make sure they re right for her circumstances, because as Susan well knows you never know what s around the corner. 8 *This customer s name has been changed to protect her privacy. 9

The budget balancing act To splurge or to save? It s a question you ve probably asked yourself a thousand times. How do you decide when it s time to spoil yourself, and when it s time to take the thrifty option? Life s splurges may get all the prominent pages in your photo album (or on Facebook), but it s the savings that pay for them. So how do you get the right balance? While everyone s approach to saving and spending is different, there are some general rules that could help you get the best of both. 3. Mix it up on holidays Holidays are a favourite splurge for many Kiwis, and a high New Zealand dollar has made travel to countries like Europe and North America more affordable than it was five years ago. But even with a strong dollar, there s always the cost of flights, accommodation, hire cars, sightseeing, eating out, shopping the list (and the credit card bill) goes on. Here s where a bit of prioritisation and compromise can help rescue the budget. Can you stay somewhere a bit less fancy for the bulk of your trip, and splurge for a couple of nights at the end? Or can you rent a serviced apartment where you can prepare the odd meal yourself, instead of eating out all of the time? 1. Make everyday affordable The majority of your disposable income goes towards paying for your day-to-day spending needs, so this is where it pays to keep your splurging to a minimum. For example, you could try on a regular basis to: eat out less often catch more public transport buy more generic brands at the supermarket drink less alcohol. Accommodation often takes the biggest bite out of your budget, so be careful what you re checking yourself in to! 2. Rethink that new car That new car smell is a big lure for many people. But how much is having a brand new car actually worth to you? If you redraw from your home loan to buy a brand new car worth $40,000, and you re paying 6% p.a. on your mortgage, that s an extra $2,400 you re paying in interest over a year. However, if you bought a similar car that s a year or two old, you might pay only $30,000 saving you $10,000 on the car, and $600 in home loan interest over the year. 4. Renovate wisely Renovating your home can make it more enjoyable to live in with the added benefit of increasing its value. But don t use the lure of a bigger price tag as an excuse to blow the budget on everything. Do some research on what the buyers in your area are looking for most in a home, and try to focus your splurging in those areas. For example, you ll probably get more of your money back on a well-appointed kitchen than a perfect pergola. A simple test is to ask yourself if potential buyers are likely to pay extra for that splurge of yours. If the answer is no, you re probably better off with the cheaper option

What s most important to you? Life is all about great experiences and occasional indulgences. And the best way to make sure you have more of them is to decide what s most important to you, and focus your spending there. Of course, don t forget to budget for the most important thing of all protecting your health, family and lifestyle. Check out our tips on page 24 for potential options to manage the cost of your insurance premiums. Talk to your financial adviser for help in achieving your financial goals. 10 Everyday heroes Want more super foods in your diet? Here are some everyday heroes that will help you to ward off the winter nasties. We all know that what we eat and how we eat has a major influence on our health, wellbeing and the quality of our life. But there s healthy eating and then there s really healthy eating. Increasingly there is world-wide interest in foods containing unique and special properties foods so high in goodness that they can actually help your body fight off some serious diseases. If you re thinking that these super foods sound expensive and hard to find, think again. Many super foods are regular supermarket items that are highly affordable. Here are five everyday heroes that are in season and ripe for the picking this winter

Making every day super With these super foods so readily accessible, there s no reason why you can t make them part of your everyday life. Spinach Popeye was definitely onto something. Spinach is full of potassium, vitamins C, E and A, as well as antioxidants such as beta-carotene. Lightly steamed or sautéed spinach can make an easy and healthy side dish. Or you can use raw baby spinach leaves instead of lettuce to add more substance to your salads. Kumera A New Zealand favourite, kumera is much better for you than your average potato because it is high in carotenoids (powerful anti-oxidants), vitamin C, potassium and fibre. Kumera can also help stabilise your blood sugar levels, making it a great ingredient for diabetics. Consider using kumera as a substitute or top-up for potatoes in your mash, soups and Sunday roasts. You ll get all of the starchy comfort of regular potatoes, plus a host of extra nutritional benefits. A spoonful of sugar (or whatever tickles your taste buds). It never hurts to add a small amount of your own personal super foods to your diet that is food that makes you happy. Whether it is cheese, chocolate or wine, food should make you feel good. And nothing beats comfort food in the cold of winter. Broccoli Widely available and a humble garden vegetable, broccoli is in fact packed with vital nutritional building blocks. The levels of selenium and particular amino acids in broccoli have led to it being labelled as a particular power food in preventing a number of cancers, including lung, colon, rectum and stomach cancer. To get the best nutritional value out of broccoli, don t boil or overcook it. Lightly steamed or stir-fried are the ways to keep the good bits in. Leeks Leeks are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin E and some B vitamins including folate. They also contain the minerals copper, iron and potassium and several phytochemicals including saponins and flavonoids. Saponins health benefits are contributed to supporting the immune system and they may help lower cholesterol. Flavonoids are a type of antioxidant; they are beneficial to many body systems including the immune system and liver function. Carrots If your grandma used to tell you carrots would help you see better, she was right. Carrots are high in betacarotene, the precursor to vitamin A (great for eyesight and growth). The flavonoid compounds in carrots can also help protect you from skin, lung and oral cavity cancers. There are very few salads or main meals that can t benefit from a bit of sliced or shredded carrot in there somewhere. But again, don t overcook it raw or lightly cooked are the best ways to preserve a carrot s goodness. 18 Leeks are an easy-to-grow, versatile winter vegetable. Great for stir-fries and soups. 12 Review. Refine. Replace? Is replacement right for you? If you are advised or encouraged to replace your policy, either with a new OnePath policy or with another insurer, you need to be sure that this is the right decision for you both now and in the future. Below is a brief overview of some of the key things you need to be aware of and take into consideration when thinking about replacing your insurance policy. What you need to know before making changes to your insurance policy. Life doesn t stand still and neither should your insurance. As your circumstances change over time, so do your insurance needs. Likewise, insurance policies are constantly evolving, with companies introducing new terms, definitions, coverage, and pricing. We encourage you to undertake regular reviews with your adviser to ensure that your insurance cover keeps in line with your changing needs and that you are aware of any enhancements to your policy. Often, minor adjustments to your existing policy are all that is required to bring it into line with your personal situation, and on some occasions, it may make sense to completely replace your policy. Your health Since you first took out your insurance policy, have there been any changes to your health? If so, when you take out a new policy, any medical condition you have developed since you took out the original policy could be considered a pre-existing condition now. This means that any pre-existing condition could be excluded from your new cover or you could end up paying a higher premium to cover it Cover Will your new policy give you the same (or more) cover as your current policy? It s important that you consider what your existing policy covers you for and, with the assistance of your adviser, compare this with the policy you are thinking about switching to. Cost Your new policy may be cheaper now, but how does it compare with your current policy over time? While it would seem a simple exercise to compare the pure cost of one policy versus another, there are a few things to consider before you make the decision to switch, such as whether the premiums are fixed (i.e. they don t change over time) or variable (i.e. they increase with age). So, don t just make a decision on cost today, make sure you consider the cost over time Definitions Have you read and understood the fine print? Definitions (e.g. medical conditions, employment, occupation, income etc.) are an important aspect of any insurance policy and need to be carefully considered. There are often subtle differences between policies sometimes they can work in your favour and sometimes they can work against you. Financial strength Do you trust the insurer to be there for you if you ever need to make a claim? An insurer s financial strength rating is a measurement that summarises the risk of an insurer defaulting on its obligation to pay claims. It s important to know about the financial strength rating of all insurance providers so that you can make an informed decision. We offer OnePath customers the ability to increase their Life, Trauma or Complete Disablement Cover by up to $250,000, without any medical evidence, when they experience certain life events. This means you can easily keep your cover up to date with your lifestyle regardless of any changes to your health since you first took out your policy.

Even a small health problem can affect a future claim if you don t tell your insurer about it. Here s an example: Paul took out a medical insurance policy with Company A. Two years later he started to experience pain in his right knee, so he went to see his doctor. The doctor prescribed anti-inflammatory medication and Paul began to feel better. No insurance claim was required. Six months later, Paul decided to switch his insurance policy to Company B. He didn t mention his visit to the doctor about his knee when he took out his new policy because his symptoms had gone. Over the next year, Paul s knee problem got progressively worse and he was told that he needed a knee replacement. When Paul made a claim with Company B for the surgery his claim was declined due to non-disclosure as his knee problem was considered to be a pre-existing condition. The claim would have been payable with Company A because he took out the policy before he started experiencing knee pain. At OnePath, we are constantly reviewing our products to ensure that you have the best cover available. Every time we make enhancements to our product range we pass them on to you. This means that if you ever need to make a claim, you can take comfort in knowing that you will be assessed using the best of either the most recent policy wording or the policy wording provided when you took out your policy with us.* Expert advice When it comes to protecting your life and lifestyle we strongly believe that your decisions should be based on professional advice, because at claim time you want your insurance policy to do what you d expect it to do. Your adviser will help you choose the right course of action for your personal situation. Here are some of the things your adviser will provide you with when reviewing your insurance cover: A copy of their Disclosure Statement a document detailing information about the adviser, which could include how they are paid and what you can do to resolve any issues or disputes that may arise. A review of your circumstances and plans to ensure that you remain on track to achieve your goals. If replacing a policy, an explanation of the differences between the existing and proposed policies, and the reasons why replacement (or not) is your best option. A written recommendation including the reasons behind their recommendation. We re here to help If you do decide to replace your policy, your adviser will assist you in completing a replacement policy advice form. By signing this form you are acknowledging that you are comfortable with the amount of information you have been given (and any advice you may have received), and are happy to make a decision as a result. For more information about reviewing your insurance needs, visit our website or contact us on *The Policy Upgrade Benefit applies to Major Medical Cover regardless of the commencement date of the policy, and to all OnePath Life policies issued on or after 1 May

Keeping your cover within reach FreePost Authority At OnePath we are committed to giving you choice and flexibility so that you can keep your valuable cover throughout life s changes. If the cost of your insurance premiums is on your mind, here are some tips that may be helpful in decreasing the costs for you: * OnePath Life (NZ) Limited Private Bag Victoria Street West Auckland 1142 Smokers pay a higher premium, so if you ve been a non-smoker for 12 months or more you can ask us to lower your premiums. If you have a loading on your policy (this is where you may be paying extra due to health reasons) and believe your health has significantly improved, you can ask us to review your premium. If you have Major Medical Cover you could consider removing any of the two optional policy add-ons (if you have them) and keep the base cover only. Your Major Medical policy may also include an excess, which is the amount you contribute towards any claims. The higher the excess, the lower the premium you pay. Depending on the type of cover you have, you can lower your premiums by reducing the amount of cover, increasing a waiting period or removing additional add-on benefits. You have the option to suspend your cover in the following circumstances:»» If you are suffering financial hardship you can suspend your cover for up to three months.»» If you are on employer-approved leave such as maternity or sabbatical leave you can suspend your cover for up to 12 months.»» If you are travelling overseas you can suspend your cover for up to 12 months. If you have Premium Cover you are entitled to have your premiums paid for six months if you are made redundant or become bankrupt. Take advantage of our Client Membership Benefits service to get some free and independent budgeting or financial advice. * Terms and conditions apply. Please refer to your policy document for the full definitions, terms and conditions. Did you know? If you alter or cancel your insurance now and then reapply at a later stage (with OnePath Life or another insurer), you will be assessed on your current state of health. This may result in higher premiums or exclusions to your policy. It is important that you talk to your adviser if your circumstances have changed or you are considering making changes to your insurance cover. Alternatively, you can call us on
