ASSOCIATION OF BUSINESSMEN IN EDUCATION 1. Who are we? Businessmen in Education Empresarios por la Educación ExE--is a non-profit civil association integrated by businessmen, companies and opinion leaders,committed to the improvement of public education in Peru, as the means to achieve economic, social and political equity in the country, and guide it towards sustainable development. ExE is an inclusive institution, in which any businessman or company can find the possibility and the opportunity to carry out activities that involve social responsibility. ExE started in February 2007,based on the educational initiatives that CONFIEP (Confederación Nacional de Instituciones Empresariales Privadas) had been implementing in the past years, with the firm conviction that education is essential to attain the country s development and the wellbeing of its people. Thus, our association embodies the commitment of the most important companies, businessmen and opinion leaders towards this purpose. At present, 40 members and 24 companies have already joined ExE. MISSION Articulate and empower the active participation of the business sectorin education, through dialogue and the development of strategies in a joint effort with the government, international organizations and society at large, focusing on improving the quality and equity of public education among the poorest urban and rural areas. VISION ExE is a well established and credited institution that focuses on education and articulates the contribution of the business sector knowledge, management experience, initiative, leadership, and financial resources with the Government and society, aiming at tangible results on the improvement of quality and equity in education among the poorest rural and urban areas of Peru. OBJECTIVES Promote and articulate the contribution of the business sector (knowledge, management experience, initiative, leadership, and financial resources) to achieve far-reaching impact on the quality and equity of education. Promote synergy among companies, civil organizations, educators and the Ministry of Education, without replacing the government s task in this field, but rather cooperating with it. Coordinate and develop activities and projects, without interfering with the free initiative of those who work in the area of education.

2. OUR PROGRAMS The programs managed by Businessmen in Education are financed through donations from private companies; which, in turn, receive a donation certificate with tax incentives. 2.1 SCHOOL MANAGEMENT Leer para Crecer - Reading to Grow Improve teacher performance in reading and writing techniques in public schools, so that students learn to read comprehensively and with fluency, and to write their own texts. 2.2 INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES ICT(ICT Literacy) Digital Inclusion (ICT Literacy) Inclusión n Digital ICT develops teacher abilities in the efficient use of technology and its application in class. ICT serves as a tool to improve teaching methods and the
learning capacity of students. Greater access to technology contributes to the upgrading of the quality of education. The program is conducted in strategic alliance with Microsoft Peru as a part of its overall program "Alianza por la Educación", and contributes significantly with strategies and programs to integrate technology to the classroom. This program is currently being implemented, and its aim is to train 77,000 teachers. Strengthening teacher skills in Moquegua Strengthens the skills of 2,902 teachers (100% of teachers in Moquegua) to improve their teaching abilities, through training in technology, communication and logical-mathematical reasoning.
2.3 ARTICULATION AND SUPPORT OF INITIATIVES Medical and Educational Community Center in Pisco and Chincha Implementation of the Medical and Educational Community Center in Pisco and Chinchato improve the quality of life of the local population, pointing towards a sustainable and integral development. Innovative Projects on Reading and Creative Expression Prizes granted to initiatives that focus on teaching strategies of integral communication (reading and writing). Currently, the project benefits 27,000 students, involves 1,056 schools and has granted 276 prizes. Annual Fair-Exhibition of Educational Projects Spread and share successful initiatives from the private and public sectors. Articulating Efforts: Mapping Gathering information on educational initiatives and projects developed by the private sector. Promote permanent updating and training Aligned to the objectives of the National Educational Emergency Program Aligned to the curricula of the Ministry of Education READING TOGROW This program s main challenge is that of encouraging private businesses to contribute towards education, society s main instrument to achieve social development. This program comes to life as an answer to the urgent need of improving skills of public school teachers, mainly in reading and writing. Its end product is that children learn to read comprehensively, with fluency, and that they are able to create their own written texts. Since its beginning, seven years ago, this program has been implemented in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. To date, it is being applied in: Ica (Los Molinos and La Tinguiña) by the companies Enersur, Electrodunas and Don Ricardo; in Chincha, by the Company Textil del Valle; in Chumbivilcas (Cusco) by the Company Hudbay; in Cusco, Arequipa, Apurímac y Ayacucho by the Mining Company Ares and the Mining Company Suyamarca; in Chilca with the Company Kallpa; in Arequipa with the Mining Society Cerro Verde; in Cajamarca with the Mining Company Lumina; in Ayacucho with the Mining Company Sullamarca; in Amazonas with Odebrecht, in the district of Ventanilla (Callao), with the company PRODAC; in Apurimac with the Mining Company Ares and the Mining Company Suyamarca, and in Piurawith the Asociación Civil Fondo Social Terminal Portuario de Paita. To date, we have trained a total of 687 teachers and 18,701 students in 122 schools in this program. This alliance is an example of a joint venture between private enterprises- ExE, international cooperation through USAID and the Universidad PeruanaCayetano Heredia (UPCH) to support Peru s development policies.

NATIONAL PROGRAM FOR DIGITAL INCLUSION This program develops teacher skills for an Inclusión n Digital effective and adequate use of Information and Communication Technology ICT- and its implementation in the classroom in order to improve student learning. It also allows teachers to participate in future training programs. Moreover, this program is intended to leave behind well trained local teachers so that they can, in turn, transmit their knowledge on ICT and its use in class to other teachers and students in their region. The program is conducted in strategic alliance with Microsoft Peru, as part of its global program "Alianza por la Educación with the aim of reducing the digital divide by incorporating ICT in teaching-learning process and strengthen the quality of education in different regions of Peru. This program is being carried out through other alliances too: Ministry of Education, Intel Peru, IBM Peru and the regional governments where the program is implemented. The Intel education program is a worldwide initiative that contributes with the development of abilities of the 21st century of the students INTEL LEARN PROGRAM This is a program on technological education for children and young adults (8-16 years old) in disadvantaged communities. ExE forms an alliance with Intel to provide this program in Peru. Students develop projects to benefit their community using information and communication technologies. The program allows students to develop values and skills of the 21 st century, as technological literacy, critical thinking, collaboration, teamwork, ethics and values. Globally, Intel has implemented this program in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, Turkey and Russia, among others. Globally, an estimated 93% of students that are enrolled in the program are able to finish it. INTEL TEACH PROGRAM ExE also forms an alliance with Intel to provide the Intel Teach program in Peru. It is a global initiative that prepares teachers to develop meaningful and constructive learning environments. It promotes professional development and integrates information and communication technologies in the classroom as facilitators for learning. In just 6 months, this program has been implemented in the following regions of Peru: Amazonas, Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Ica, Junín, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Loreto, Pasco, Piura, Puno, Tumbes and Ucayali. It has benefited a total of 77,980 students and 5,570 teachers in 1,912 schools.

READIG COMPANION The project aims to help students improve their skills in English, using voice recognition technology based in the web site developed by IBM. As part of this initiative high school English teachers are trained in the use of the software and are given headphones with a microphone so they can use in their schools Reading Companion. STRENGTHENING TEACHER SKILLS IN MOQUEGUA The objective is to strengthen teacher skills in order to improve their performance through training in ICT, communication and logical-mathematical reasoning. It also promotes the creation of virtual online learning groups, allowing teachers to exchange experiences and knowledge, which can be applied in the classroom to improve the learning-teaching process. This program has benefited 100% of the teachers in the Region of Moquegua.
MEDICAL AND EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY CENTERS IN PISCO AND CHINCHA The main purpose is to strengthen health and educational services at the local level, through the building and implementation of the Medical and Educational Community Center in the cities of Pisco and Chincha, especially addressed to the less favored sectors of the population in these areas. The aim is to improve their quality of life with the perspective of attaining an integral and sustainable development. Specific objectives to be met within the area are: Improve health and nutrition of the population. Improve children s development and growth from conception up to 5 years of age. Generate conditions for educational development through workshops, and online training. This project will benefit around 116,000 people from the 8 districts of Pisco province and 181,000 people from the 11 Chincha districts. INNOVATIVE PROJECTS ON READING AND FREE - CREATIVE WRITING This project is being executed jointly with FONDEP National Fund for Development of Education in Peru and Antamina Mining Fund, in which ExE promotes and manages the financial resources of the Contest Reading and Free-Creative Writing: Development of Communication Capacities in the Elementary Schools of the Ancash Region. Currently, a total of 1,057 elementary schools are benefiting from this project. ANNUAL FAIR/EXHIBITION OF EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS The annual fair is an open window that serves to spread and share successful experiences of the private and public sectors in the educational area. Thus far, ExE has organized 2 fairs, both within CONFIEP S Annual Congress, in which businesses and institutions from public sectors have participated. Twenty-two successful experiences were presented in each fair.
CORPORATE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM This program allows a closer relationship between the company that provides help and the people in the community. It also raises awareness on issues of development and education within the workers of the company, given that social committees are established within the companies to promote social aid. Many workshops are organized to ensure that these committees are sustainable, and thus able to develop more projects in the future. How does it work: When working with a company, ExE makes an internal and external analysis of the company, to develop an initial plan. Once this is done, a volunteer guide is developed. A campaign is then organized to form a social committee, which is trained in a workshop before helping the community. There is also an opportunity to organize trips to learn about successful corporate volunteer experiences for members of the social committee. 3. HOW TO PARTICIPATE JOINING BUSINESSMEN IN EDUCATION When joining ExE, Peruvian companies and businessmen receive the orientation and support needed to carry out their initiatives in social responsibility in the field of education. ExE is the only Association with educational purposes that invites companies and business groups from different production sectors. Joining ExE means having permanent interaction with leading businesses involved in education at the national level. -Relations with companies from the same area of influence that can lead to the creation of alliances, adoption of good practices and plans agreed by consensus.
-Take part in events organized by ExE, or in which ExE participates, such as: fairs, congresses -A new space for the exchange of experiences. ExE offers its experience in Volunteer Program for Businesses at the national level; an essential ingredient in the task of social responsibility that strengthens the relationship between the company and the community within its area of influence. Joining ExE means having greater influence to implement initiatives and strategies at the government and institutional level. Facilitates the relationship with Regional Governments, Municipalities, Ministry of Education, DRE s (Dirección Regional de Educación) Regional Department of Education, UGEL (Unidad de Gestión Educativa Local) - Office for Local Educational Administration), etc. By joining ExE, businesses have access to the methodologies and tools that channel businessmen s capacities towards concrete actions. - Access to a portfolio of educational programs with proven efficiency - Profit from ExE s experience in educational programs of its own, and that of other companies at the national level - Support in educational programs - Participation in thematical committees formed by ExE members JOINING A WORKING COMMITTEE Committees are working groups in which businessmen, specialists and renowned intellectuals participate.
