The biggest increase has been in brow lifts, with 19 per cent more men booking in for the age-defying surgery in 2012 compared with 2011. Facelifts and eyelid surgery have also seen a jump, with a rise of 14 per cent and 11 per cent respectively, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. More older men are having liposuction too, with a 21 per cent rise in over-50s enquiring about it. It should not come as a surprise. Men in the spotlight who have cosmetic surgery are becoming increasingly vocal about it. In the past year alone, singer Peter Andre has admitted having a nose job and Botox, while music mogul Simon Cowell has been linked to everything from placenta facials to vitamin injections. Brad Pitt, 50, is rumoured to be a fan of dermal fillers and we cannot forget footballer Wayne Rooney s hair transplant. With the ever-increasing pressure to look great, CHRISTINA EARLE speaks to four men who proudly show off their post-surgery bodies. DAVE, car salesman

CAR salesman Dave Willcocks has spent 15,000 on plastic surgery. The 58-year-old, from Torquay, Devon, has had a brow lift, upper eyelid surgery, a facelift and liposuction on his chin and on stomach. He says: I ve had such a lot of banter from my mates about having cosmetic surgery. They really take the mickey but no one can deny it s taken ten years off the way I look. I just got fed up with my face and body I had these heavy bags under my eyes, jowls and a big tummy. Age wasn t on my side, despite exercising at the gym regularly and having a good diet. My reflection made me feel miserable so I decided to look into going under the knife. In the end, I dug into my savings and booked in for surgery at London s Institute of Cosmetic Surgery. I had it all done at the same time but it wasn t a walk in the park the surgery took eight hours and I woke up in a lot of pain. It took at least two weeks for the swelling to go down and I had to take a lot of time off work. Even after six months I still had some swelling down the side of my face and in my neck. The pain didn t last long, but there was a lot of discomfort. My wife Josie supported me all the way, saying it was for the best if it made me feel better. When the inflammation went down, I was really pleased with the results. I no longer give myself a fright when I catch my reflection in the mirror and the surgery boosted my self-esteem. My parents thought it was an odd thing to do though, and some of my mates took a lot of convincing. I had the work done six years ago and I think I look pretty good now. I still look natural just young for my age." COLIN, mechanic TRANSPORT mechanic Colin Ollerenshaw had a tummy tuck and upper body lift last year. The 54-year-old, from Acocks Green, West Mids, underwent the procedure to remove huge folds of skin left behind after his 13st weight loss. Colin, who is married to Beverley, 49, says: I d had a gastric bypass in August 2009 to lose weight, which was brilliant. I halved my body weight from 25st and got down to a healthy 12st 7lbs perfect for my 5ft 7in frame. I looked half the man I was in clothes, but without my clothes on I looked horrible. So I decided to bite the bullet and book in for a tummy tuck and upper body lift with Dr Azad at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Fortunately, the cost of the surgery was covered in my NHS gastric surgery aftercare package. I had four operations in total three to remove the skin on my body and one for the tummy tuck, meaning I was on the operating table for 14 hours. Even though I was sore when I came round each time, it was worth it. In total, a whopping 13lbs of skin was taken off and I feel much more confident as a result. I have some scarring from the surgery but it s a small price to pay. All of my friends and family think I look fab. But in myself, I feel better than ever. I really can t wait to hop in the swimming pool and show off my barely-there belly when I m on holiday." CHRIS, plumber PLUMBER Chris Knowles, 38, from Holmfirth, West Yorks, is married to teaching assistant Jennifer, 30. He had liposuction after diet and exercise didn t shift his midriff fat. He says: Weight has never been an issue for me. My job as a plumber keeps me on my feet all day and I train six days a week in the gym and eat healthily But no matter how much exercise I did or how little I ate, I couldn t shift the fat on my stomach. I wouldn t wear T-shirts because I felt embarrassed. My tummy didn t reflect the amount of work I put into my abs they were hidden under unsightly flab. I thought cosmetic surgery was worth exploring. I had to do something about my stomach as it was affecting my day-today life.

Jennifer supported me all the way. But I didn t tell my friends I thought it d be a talking point at the pub and didn t want to be the focal point of their jokes. Even so, I knew it was the right thing to do. After analysing my diet and exercise plan, the surgeon agreed to perform the lipo and we set a date. Three months after the consultation, I was put to sleep while surgeons at Transform Pines Hospital in Manchester sucked out the fat from my belly. It took about an hour and I woke up with bandages wrapped round my middle. It was quite painful and I couldn t pick up my six-year-old daughter Freya for a week or go to work. But the thought of seeing my abs for the first time spurred me on. Even though it cost a few thousand pounds, I m much happier with my body. I don t mind wearing T-shirts or taking Freya swimming. It s not just rich women and celebs who have plastic surgery. I did and I feel much more confident for it. The best part is no one really bats an eyelid." TREVOR, engineer TREVOR ATKINSON, 58, has had surgery to shrink his eyelids. The aircraft engineer, from Hove, East Sussex, felt they made him look old before his time. He says: I hated the hooded" look above my eyes, and I was starting to get quite obsessed by it. I was convinced that people were staring at my eyelids when they were talking to me. I tried Botox on the lines on my face and that made little difference. That s when I decided to look into eye-lift surgery on the internet. I eventually chose The Harley Medical Group and booked in for a consultation. The surgeon explained what would be done during the operation and we agreed a date. I was anxiously excited on the morning of the op and couldn t wait to see the results. The two-hour operation was done at Highgate Hospital in London. I was wheeled into surgery and given an anaesthetic. My eyes were bruised when I came round, but they didn t hurt and within two weeks the swelling and bruising had disappeared. After six days I had the stitches taken out, and I was thrilled with the difference. I certainly look younger as a result of my surgery and friends keep saying to me that I look well, rather than noticing that my face has radically changed. I love it, because it looks so natural too and people who don t know me have no idea I ve had plastic surgery. There s a lot of stigma surrounding men having cosmetic procedures but there shouldn t be. In the 21st century men are expected to look presentable. And if that means having plastic surgery, then why not? It shouldn t be about being macho or not. I would certainly consider more surgery if I need it." Related Images
