AMERICAN EXPRESS COMPANY AMERICAN CORPORATE EXPRESS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY COMPANY PHILANTHROPY ANNUAL REPORT

American Express Corporate Social Responsibility makes grants in three major program areas: Leadership, Historic Preservation and Community Service. This includes the American Express Foundation, American Express Charitable Fund and certain corporate gifts. In 2014, contributions totaled $32.4 million.

Employee Programs* 24% Community Service 27% n Leadership n Historic Preservation n Community Sevice n Employee Programs Leadership 28% Historic Preservation 21% * Includes Gift Matching, Scholarships and Serve2Gether Programs In 2014, American Express contributed $32.4 million in over 300 grants to nonprofit organizations around the world in our priority giving areas of Leadership, Historic Preservation, and Community Service. Grants were made to organizations in 21 states and 14 countries. Additionally, we supported over 5,900 organizations through our employee gift matching program. Our online grant application and review process resulted in over 11,000 visits to the site by nonprofit organizations and nearly 600 proposals saving over 15,000 sheets of paper. LEADERSHIP Through this theme, we support projects that embrace the best methods, programs and partners that provide current and future emerging nonprofit leaders with practical opportunities to learn and build leadership skills. In 2014, we trained 403 emerging nonprofit leaders through 13 American Express Leadership Academy programs in New York, Phoenix, Tokyo, London, Gurgaon (India), Atlanta, Mexico City, Toronto and Aspen. The Leadership Academy is designed as a multidisciplinary approach to training the next generation of emerging nonprofit leaders through an intense, leadership development training. Our partners in this effort include the Center for Creative Leadership (New York), Common Purpose (London and Gurgaon), Japan Philanthropic Association and ETIC (Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Community) (Tokyo), Thunderbird School of Global Management (Phoenix) the ASU Lodestar Center (Phoenix), the Aspen Institute (Aspen, CO), Ashoka (New York, Mexico City and Toronto) and Points of Light (Atlanta, GA). In addition, we made over 100 grants to nonprofit organizations to create, develop, expand or maintain their own development programs for high potential, emerging leaders. Over 5,300 leaders were impacted by grants to organizations as diverse as Americans for the Arts, Atlas Corps, Independent Sector, Latino Policy Forum, Leaderspring, Nature Bridge, Public Allies and Special Olympics. To help scale nonprofit leadership development, American Express partnered with the Presidio Institute and Acumen to establish online leadership training platforms to provide leadership training to a worldwide virtual audience. 1

HISTORIC PRESERVATION In this program area, we support projects that preserve or rediscover major historic sites in order to provide sustainable access and enjoyment for current and future audiences. Through our partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation s National Treasures Program we supported over 50 public awareness campaigns and provided funding to restore historic sites such as the Nantucket Lightship/LV-112 in Boston, which was once the most remote manned lighthouse on earth, and to the Haas-Lilienthal House in San Francisco to complete the restoration of this national treasure. American Express provided $1.5 million in grant funding to support preservation efforts at nine historic sites as part of the World Monument Fund 2014 Watch. Projects receiving funding are Pokfulam Village in Hong Kong (SAR), China; the churches of Saint Merri and Notre-Dame-de-Lorette in Paris, France; the Farnese Aviaries in Rome, Italy; Tenyuji Temple, Ogatsu, Japan; Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico; the Güell Pavilions in Barcelona, Spain; the House of Wonders in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania; Battersea Power Station in London, United Kingdom; and Sulgrave Manor in Sulgrave, United Kingdom. Other grants went to organizations as diverse as the Trust for the National Mall in Washington, DC (to relocate and restore the Lockkeeper s House on the National Mall), the Seventh Regiment Armory in New York City (to restore the Tiffany Windows in the Veterans Room) and Rijks Museum in Amsterdam (to restore the Breeda Wall). COMMUNITY SERVICE We encourage good citizenship by supporting organizations that cultivate meaningful opportunities for civic engagement by our employees and members of the community through our Community Service program. In 2014, we awarded over 95 grants to fund community service projects that resulted in thousands of volunteers building or restoring over 555 homes, caring for 460 public parks, mentoring 140,000 young people, creating over 100,000 care kits for hospitalized children, and rescuing 45 million pounds of food to be distributed to the hungry. We also provided grants to a number of relief organizations following natural disasters. Organizations supported included the American Red Cross, Australian Business and Community Network, City Harvest, City Year, Habitat for Humanity, Harlem Children s Zone, International Rescue Committee, Junior Achievement, Project Sunshine, United Way, and Sussex Community Foundation. In addition, we mobilized employees in more than 150,000 hours of company-sponsored volunteer service, engaged 80 percent of our employees in the U.S. and nearly 70 percent of our employees in Canada to make charitable pledges through the company s annual employee giving campaign, and delivered nearly 9,000 hours of pro bono consulting services (valued at $1.3MM) to nonprofits around the globe through our Serve2Gether Consulting program.
