HANDHELD DEVICES FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS 2016 UJ is committed to bringing 21 st century education to its students by maximising the use of technology for teaching and learning. It is therefore imperative that all first-year students are equipped with a tablet or, in the Faculties of Science, Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), and Art Design and Architecture (FADA), preferably with a laptop. It is a strict requirement that you have a tablet or a laptop at the beginning of the academic year, but if you are uncertain of which device to purchase, consult with your faculty the moment you have registered. There is widespread Wi-Fi on campus, as well as numerous points for charging your tablet or laptop. Minimum specifications: Tablets The specifications (see Annexure A) provide for minimum requirements in respect of functionality, processing power and connectivity. Please note that these are minimum specifications. More advanced laptops or tablets are of course acceptable. You do not need to buy another device if you already have one complying with the minimum specifications. The tablet must have built-in Wi-Fi that will enable you to access all UJ s electronic resources. Existing deals on devices Students can shop around for good deals and Apple gives a discount to registered students when producing a student card. 7. ONLINE SURVEYS FOR IMMEDIATE COMPLETION Those of you who presently have access to technology can start joining UJ s digital world right away by simply completing our two compulsory online surveys. The Student Profile Questionnaire gives us the base-line knowledge about our entrants needed for effective teaching and the Computer Skills Test checks whether you will be adequately equipped for UJ s digital world, or whether you will be required to participate in essential computer training after registration. To take these surveys, simply go to uconnect.uj.ac.za and select the Surveys icon. Of course, if you prefer, you may complete these surveys at registration, but why not deal with some formalities right away? 3
