Blue Distinction Blue Distinction is an innovative quality designation that helps consumers and their physicians find medical facilities that have a demonstrated expertise in specialty care. Blue Distinction recognizes facilities that meet objective, evidence-based thresholds for clinical quality, developed in collaboration with expert physicians and medical organizations. These designated facilities are subject to periodic re-evaluation, reassessing their structure, processes and aggregate patient outcomes. Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care Blue Distinction s goal is to give consumers in need of specialty care credible information to make more effective healthcare decisions, thus delivering better value to Blue Cross and Blue Shield members 1. The Blue Distinction program examines evidence-based quality measures, processes and aggregate outcomes for clinical care. At the core of Blue Distinction are the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care (Blue Distinction Centers), initially launched in 2006. Areas covered by this program include bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery and transplant. There can be great variation in how patients are evaluated and treated. Blue Distinction Centers help you identify facilities that meet quality-focused criteria and are staffed appropriately and fully integrated to support the goals of increased patient health and safety. 1 Some Blue companies may already participate in local spine surgery programs. The Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery do not disrupt or replace these existing programs. Blue members may not necessarily be required to use institutions that are part of this program.
Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery The selection criteria used in designating Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery were developed in collaboration with expert physicians and medical organizations Medical facilities submit clinical data to establish they meet our selection criteria, which include: an established spine surgery program, performing required annual volumes for certain procedures (e.g., at least 100 procedures annually for discectomy, fusion and/or decompression) an experienced spine surgery team, including spine surgeons with board certification and case volumes that meet the selection criteria for spine surgery procedures an established acute care inpatient facility, including intensive care, emergency care and a full range of patient support services full accreditation by a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)-deemed national accreditation organization a comprehensive quality management program processes for patient selection and appropriateness of surgery processes that support transitions of care clinical outcomes that meet objective thresholds, such as complication rates and length of stay, for specific procedures To see a list of the specific selection criteria for the Blue Distinction Centers for Spine Surgery, please visit www.bcbs.com/bluedistinction.
