Buying On Margin The practice of purchasing securities with cash borrowed from a broker is referred to as buying on margin. The percentage margin is defined as the equity value contributed by an investor as a percentage of the current market value of the securities held in the margin account. Margin trading is risky because both gains and losses are amplified. Cash and securities held in the margin account are used as collateral for the margin loan.
