Facilities 12 Welcome to your Library Welcome to the Barrington Library. This guide provides an introduction to our support to you during your studies and an outline of our services and resources. We provide: A wide range of print and electronic learning materials covering all the subjects taught at DA-CMT Training to enable you to effectively locate, evaluate and use information Support from our Specialist staff Specialist services including a unique collection of documents and technical reports and edefence News 24/7 access to help and resources via our Digital Library The Library is next to the Café and Chat building. (On official site maps the Library may be marked as Building 67). Your Library User ID When you join the Library we will provide you with a Library card. The barcode number is your Library User ID that will enable you to: Access special features in the Library Catalogue Borrow, reserve and renew books Use the Ask a Librarian service Accessing your Library Account How to view what you currently have on loan Select the Main Library Catalogue link from the Library Essentials list on the Digital Library. Log into the Library Catalogue using your user ID (this is the barcode on your library card) as both your username and password. Your account with a list of your loans will then be displayed. Borrowing items There is no limit to the number of books you can borrow. Loan periods are: Loan Type Full-Time Students Part-Time Students General Loan 6 weeks 6 weeks Short loan 1 week 4 weeks In Demand Overnight Overnight Inter-Library Loans 3 weeks 3 weeks The Digital Library The Barrington Digital Library is our website providing access to electronic journals, papers and e-books, as well as details of our physical collection. It also provides access to your Library account and training materials to support you throughout your course. Course pages There is a Course Page for all of the courses available at DA-CMT, accessible from the Students area on the Digital Library. This page gives you access to the recommended databases, e-journals, e-books, and websites for the course you will be studying. 1 2 3 4 5 Key Essential Library links e.g. Library catalogues, A-Z ejournals, Keeping up to Date, etc Students area and Course Pages Studying off site advice PhD research support Quick Library Catalogue search Making enquiries The Ask a Librarian service is available wherever you see this logo. Click on the blue button and complete the form with your Library User ID (library card number) or your student number, and your enquiry. A-Z resources list If you know the database or website you want to access, the A-Z Resources tab on the Digital Library provides an alphabetical list of all our resources. Each resource entry includes a description, direct link, and information about any password requirements. 1 2 3 4 5 3

Finding Information Finding Information Finding what you need How to find a book You can search the Library Catalogue for print books and some of our e-books by a basic keyword search, or by author, title, or subject by using the drop down menu next to the search box. Each item in the catalogue provides details of availability (number of copies, call number, and location). Click on the title of the book you want. Note the call number as that will tell you where the book is shelved. Each bay of Library shelves has a list detailing call numbers and subjects. If the book is available electronically the catalogue record will contain an online access link to the e-book. Reserving items You can reserve any of the items available for loan within the Library Catalogue. The item you require may be on loan to another user, or you may be working off site and require the items to be put aside for you to collect. Please see Page 7 for guidance on how to place and cancel reservations. How to find a journal Use the e-journal A-Z title list on the Digital Library. Type in the name of the journal you want to find and click Go. Click on the title of the journal you want to access. The Library has a few subscriptions to journals in paper format only. If the journal you are looking for is not on the A-Z list try searching the Library Catalogue click on Advanced Search and make sure you tick in the box next to Journals before you enter your search. How to find a report or thesis The Reports Section Catalogue (available only on campus) holds previous theses and technical reports as well as papers by Cranfield academic staff. For security reasons the Reports Section has a separate library catalogue and is only available to search whilst you are on site, accessible from the Digital Library. 4

You can search the Reports Section catalogue in the same way as the Library catalogue. To view an item from the Reports section, note the R number of the item and the Reports Section staff will retrieve it for you. To find a thesis enter the acronym for your course e.g. GWSC for Guided Weapons, then click Go. personal security clearance you may currently hold. Reports staff will be able to provide more information on this aspect. Barrington Library services The following Digital Library resources provide additional information to supplement searching the Library Catalogues and Course/Subject pages: AERADE http://aerade.cranfield.ac.uk/ Access to key worldwide aerospace and defence information sources. New resources are frequently added to the 30,000+ essential quality internet resources including websites, specialist databases, full text technical reports, engineering design data, conferences and news. CERES https://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/ A digital repository of research output from Cranfield University including journal pre-prints and peer-reviewed journal reprints, full-text digital theses and dissertations, book chapters, working papers and technical reports. Please note: you may not be able to see certain papers due to your security clearance this will be based on your course and not on any edefence News A daily email service providing full-text links (where available) to major newspaper defence-related articles six days per week (Monday to Saturday). Essentials Essentials Help and training The Information Literacy Tutorial The tutorial is designed to help you find, evaluate and use information effectively. It covers assessing the information you need to find and developing basic search techniques, to managing your search results and understanding copyright and plagiarism. Each section has summaries, hints and tips, and interactive games to test your knowledge. You can work through the tutorial from start to finish, or click straight through to a particular topic. Access the tutorial at: http://barrington.cranfield.ac.uk/ilit 1-2-1 assistance from your information specialist You can book an appointment with your library information specialist at any time. Use the Make an Appointment feature on your Course Page. PhD students can use the Research Assistance feature in the PhD Research Support Service area. Group training Every student will receive full induction training and thesis support from us but if you feel you and your fellow students would like a little extra help we can arrange a group training session. Please speak to your Information Specialist if you have a requirement for this. Online help The Help section of the Digital Library has answers to our Frequently Asked Questions as well as user guides for specific databases: http://barrington.cranfield.ac.uk/help You can also contact us via the Ask a Librarian service. 6

Your library account How to view what you currently have on loan and renew items Log into the Library Catalogue using your user ID (this is the barcode on your library card) as both your username and password. Your list of current loans will then be displayed. This list will also allow you to select items for renewal. You will be notified via your Cranfield email when items are due for renewal, are overdue, or are required by another user. If the item has been requested by another user you will not be able to renew it and you will be asked to return it to the Library. How to cancel reservations on items Log in to your library account. Click on the Holds Tab (this normally only appears if you have placed a hold) and then click Cancel next to the title you no longer want. How to reserve an item You can reserve any of the items available for loan within the Library Catalogue. The item may be on loan to another user, or you may be working off site and require the items to be put aside for you to collect. Once you have found the item you require in the catalogue, click on Place Hold. The Library will email your Cranfield mail account when the item is available for you to collect, or you may request to have the item posted to you. See Page 8 for more information on posting items. 7

Studying Studying Off Off Site Site Accessing online resources The majority of our electronic resources are available from anywhere (with the exception of the Library Reports Catalogue) but they will require authentication via a username and password to ensure that only our registered customers can use them. When you are off site, use the Offsite access box on the Digital Library homepage and enter your Cranfield credentials. This will replicate you being on campus. A small number of resources may still require authentication on campus simply look for the Shibboleth link and enter your Cranfield credentials to gain access. for the books until they are returned from your library record so if you are posting items back, we strongly advise you to use registered post. To do this, reserve the item you need on the Library Catalogue. When you receive the email alerting you that the item is ready for collection, respond with your current postal address and we will send the item to you. Using other libraries Requesting books or journal articles from other libraries (Inter-Library Loans) We aim to provide suitable resources to support you throughout your course. However if you require something that is not part of the Library collection we can request it from another library through our Inter-Library Loans service. To request an item, click on Inter-Library Loan Request under the Library Essentials section on the Digital Library Homepage and follow the on-screen instructions. Postal service If you are based in the UK or at a BFPO address, we can post books, theses, reports, and conferences from our stock to you. You will be responsible The length of time to acquire an item can vary depending on its nature and location. Copies of journal articles and papers can take a couple of days; books can take between a week to ten days. Please plan your study time to allow for this. Restrictions Material borrowed from other libraries are subject to the regulations of that institution. This may affect the length of time you can keep 8

the item, or where you may use it (occasionally certain items must only be used in the Library). Please respect any limitations there may be on an Inter-Library Loan item. We do not post Inter-Library Loan books outside the UK. Visiting other university libraries If you wish to use another university s library you can take advantage of the SCONUL Access scheme. As a SCONUL Access member you can borrow or use books and journals from the majority of university libraries in the UK and Ireland. The scheme is free to join but you must join through the Barrington Library prior to visiting another university. Please see the help section on the Barrington Digital Library for information on accessing other libraries and joining the SCONUL Access scheme. Kings Norton Library (Cranfield) The Cranfield Campus Library Catalogue link available on the Digital Library provides search access to the Kings Norton Library located at the Cranfield campus in Bedfordshire. To request an item from this Library please complete an Inter-Library Loan request form. JSCSC Library The Joint Services Command Staff College Library at Shrivenham has resources on security, strategy, and military history. Members of the Barrington Library may join the JSCSC Library and use it during normal office hours. You should take your Barrington Library card and your security pass with you if you wish to visit. The Bodleian Library, Oxford Bodleian Library Our customers are also able apply to join the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Instructions on how to do this can be found at: http://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/bodley/services/admissions/procedure After you leave the Alumni Library Online Service When you have completed your course you can join our free library service for Cranfield Shrivenham alumni. This is an online service designed to assist you in your continuing professional development. Security and fire alarms To avoid security issues, all customers are asked not to leave bags and personal belongings unattended in the Library. In the event of the fire alarm sounding all customers must leave the building immediately. A member of library staff will be present to ensure you are evacuated safely and will also inform you when the building is safe to re-enter. Health and safety PAT testing If you bring your own equipment into the Library please ensure that power cables have been PAT tested on-site. See the Cranfield Health and Safety booklet for more information or ask at the Library Service Desk for details. Lost property All lost and found property is dealt with at the Library Service Desk. First aid If you feel unwell at any time or have an accident whilst you are in the Library, please inform a member of Library staff. Trained first aiders are available in the Library. 11

Facilities Facilities Library Computers Networked computers are available in the Library. You will need a logon ID from the Information Technology Services (ITS) in order to access networked services, which include the Library Catalogue and subject databases, software applications and the Internet. Study Rooms There are two group study rooms which can be booked in advance by students via the Library Service Desk. Each study room has two computers as well as power points for laptops. Group Study Room 1 also contains a Smartboard. In addition, Study Room 2 is a Silent Study Room set aside for individual working this does not need to be booked. Printing & Photocopying The Library offers a black and white photocopying and printing facility which is operated via a card system. Photocopy/printing cards are available at the Library Service Desk and hard copy printing instructions are located at each bank of computers. Printer/Copier card prices (current as of January 2012) Units Price 20 0.80 40 1.60 (Each unit is 100 4.00 the equivalent 250 10.00 of an A4 page) Scanning Scanning facilities are available on the First Floor; printed instructions are available next to the appropriate machine. Microfiche A microfiche viewing machine is located on the Ground Floor. For help with use, please ask at the Library Service Desk. 14

DVD and video viewing We have a collection of DVDs and videos on relevant topics. These can be borrowed for one week or they may be watched in the Library. If you wish to view a DVD or video in the Library, headphones can be borrowed from the Library Service Desk. Catering and newspapers Hot and cold drinks, and a range of snacks, are available from vending machines in the main entrance of the Library. There is also a comfortable seating / eating area. We take daily deliveries of the broadsheet newspapers and the Swindon Advertiser. We also get weekly copies of the Oxford Times and the Times Higher Education Supplement. 15
