THE PHYSICIAN S OATH I pledge the following as an expression of the spirit in which I will strive to practice medicine: To promote health and to relieve suffering in both the living and the dying. To approach all my patients with integrity, candor, empathy, and respect. To honor the confidences entrusted to me. To be a student and a teacher always and to remain conscious of my limitations. To place the welfare of the patients above personal gain and to protect patients from improper care. To respond always in an emergency. To improve health care for the underserved and to work to change those conditions in society that threaten the health of the community. To withdraw from active practice when I am no longer capable of fulfilling these pledges. To keep the promise of Hippocrates: "Above all, do no harm." I make these pledges solemnly, freely, and upon my honor.

THE HO DIN AWARD On May 5, 1943, the trustees of the Southwestern Medical Foundation authorized the establishment of an award to symbolize the fundamental concept on which the medical college was based. The award is the Ho Din, which signifies human understanding and medical wisdom, and constitutes the highest honor that the Foundation can bestow. Philip D. Tolley Phil graduated summa cum laude from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science in 2014. Phil was awarded numerous honors at OSU, including the Drucilla Shepard Smith Scholastic Award for his perfect academic performance, membership in Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the College of Public Health and Human Sciences Dean s Scholar Award. During college, Phil worked as a student athletic trainer for the OSU football and women s basketball and crew teams, participated in neuromuscular research, led a physical activity program for children with special needs, volunteered regularly in the local community with Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross, held a leadership role in his local congregation, and sang in the Pacific University concert choir. Since matriculation, Phil has maintained an outstanding academic record while distinguishing himself through leadership, teaching, research, and service. Phil developed a passion for an expertise in education serving as a teaching assistant for the summer health professions anatomy course, a peer tutor for the medical school course, and subsequent student director of the advanced anatomy course. Throughout medical school, he was engaged in research in the Department of Plastic Surgery which focused on facial nerve axonal load and age, the efficacy of a new gracilis dissection technique, and facial reanimation surgery in facial paralysis. His work led to three publications, five abstracts, and two presentations. Phil was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society in his junior year and subsequently served as president of AOA. In this role, he organized the selection of new members, led community and campus service activities, and spearheaded the creation of two new service committees directed towards aiding fellow classmates with board preparation. He also served as a co-president of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Interest Group and the Life Support Interest Group. Phil is an academically gifted student distinguished through his extraordinary clinical skills and acumen, initiative, teamwork, and compassion. Repeatedly, his evaluating clerkship faculty note that he was the best student or among the best with whom they had worked, and his pediatrics attending commented, Phil is a phenomenal student! He set himself apart by ALWAYS taking the extra mile without being asked. He really thought about his patients, was interested in learning, and was selfmotivated. Combined with his compassionate bedside manner, reflective nature, and critical thinking ability, I have no doubt he will be a physician who is sought out in whatever field he chooses. A classmate states, Phil always seemed to go above and beyond to care for his patients and showed extreme compassion. His care for his patients inspired me to want to be better. Phil is one of the students with a perfect 4.0 average. He holds the distinction of being inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha in his junior year and has truly demonstrated that he is worthy to serve the suffering. After graduation, Phil, his wife Elisse, and their two year old son will move to Seattle to begin his residency in plastic surgery at the University of Washington. UT Southwestern will be proud to count him among its alumni.

This experience provides students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to effectively contribute to reducing and eliminating health disparities among the underserved. The CART program prepares future physicians to be aware of social, psychological, economic, and cultural determinants of health by participating in comprehensive service-learning experiences. ACADEMIC HERALDRY AND REGALIA Although the people, the places, and the styles have changed, you are about to participate in a reenactment of a ceremony that has existed for nearly nine centuries: the recognition of academic achievement. The tradition of recognizing academic accomplishment with ceremony, bright color, and distinctive dress is an exercise that has existed through the ages. Although the commencement ceremony and academic costume of most colleges and universities in the United States today is guided by a twentieth century standard, their roots are found in the development of the universities during the Middle Ages. The medieval universities of Western Europe, such as Paris, Bologna, Cambridge, and Oxford, have provided us with an institutional format -- the university structure; a measure of progress -- degrees; and a ceremony of achievement -- commencement. The academic hood is derived from the cloak, which in medieval times was worn over the gown. Attached to the cloak at the back of the neck was a cowl hood, which hung down or could be pulled over the head for warmth. After time, this hood became a separate article, worn over the shoulders and hanging down the wearer's back. With the coming into fashion of caps and hats during the fifteenth century, the hoods soon became more ornamental than functional. Whereas it is generally understood that in Europe gowns were necessary for warmth and hoods covered the academic clerics tonsured heads, today the American tradition has evolved toward individual expression of the institution. Although the style of the hood is not unique to each institution, the combinations of colors and chevrons have been standardized in the United States for nearly 100 years. The satin colors of the hood lining represent the institution conferring the degree. The academic colors for all components of The University of Texas System are orange and white. The color of the academic hood s velvet trim is distinctive of the degree earned, as is the tassel on the cap. Historical associations of color continue to signify the various faculties and generally carry the traditions established by their early English counterparts. The green of medicinal herbs immediately identifies a medical degree. Philosophy is signified by dark blue, the traditional color of truth and wisdom. The wealth of information earned through research in science is represented by golden yellow. The arts, letters, and humanity are represented by the purity of white.
