What is a CFD? CFDs are Contracts For Difference. CFDs allow individuals and institutions to participate in the price movement and performance of an index, currency or stock without having to physically own the underlying instrument The profit or loss on the CFD is the difference between the trading price now and the actual price when the contract is closed Contract has no expiry date It is a margined investment product that uses leverage Offers significant advantages over and above physical share trading

A CFD Example You see that Nortel receives some bad news, or feel that Nortel is going down, or may hold NT in an investment account You can profit from this situation using a CFD Nortel is trading at 4.50/4.51 You can sell 10,000 shares of Nortel a $45,000 position You would need 5% Margin or only $2,250 to sell $45,000 worth of NT (most brokers require 130%, or $58,500 to make this trade) In the next few days, Nortel goes down by $1 to $3.50 You will make $1 * 10,000 shares or $10,000 Your Return on Capital is 444%! ($10,000/$2,250) (not using CFDs, your return would have been 17%...$10,000/$58,500)
