Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana POLICY TITLE Technical/Program Outcomes Assessment POLICY NUMBER ASOM 4.22 (Formerly APPM 13.4) PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY Academic Affairs CREATION / REVISION / EFFECTIVE DATES Created January 2003/Revised March, 2005; Fall 2008/Effective Spring 2008 PURPOSE The primary purpose of technical/program outcomes assessment is to determine Ivy Tech Community College graduates mastery of the professional knowledge, comprehension, and skills required for the field the students are preparing to enter. Technical/program outcomes assessment also provides statewide curriculum committees with necessary information regarding curriculum currency and effectiveness of student learning. ORGANIZATIONAL SCOPE OR AUDIENCE Faculty, Graduates DEFINITIONS Assessment: The systematic collection, review, and use of information to drive changes undertaken for the purpose of improving overall student learning and faculty development Technical/Program outcomes: Learning outcomes defined by the faculty curriculum committee representing each academic program. The outcomes articulate the professional knowledge and skills required for the field the students have prepared to enter. POLICY Who Is Assessed: All associate-degree seeking graduation candidates participate in technical/program outcomes assessment. Students enrolled in terminal technical certificate programs (e.g., practical nursing) also participate in technical outcomes assessment. Students participating in other certificate programs (e.g., Certificates and Career Development Certificate) may also be assessed for technical outcomes. What Is Assessed: Campuses will implement outcomes assessment for individual programs according to the attached plan. If a choice of instruments is indicated (e.g. State Fire Marshal and/or Page 1 of 2
OSHA exams or portfolio ), the region or campus may choose the assessment instrument or combination of instruments that best reflects student learning outcomes. How Assessment Is To Be Used: Assessment results are reviewed by regional faculty for the improvement of the teaching/learning process. Results are also reviewed annually by the appropriate curriculum committees as a part of the College s continuing efforts to enhance student learning. PROCEDURE How Students Are Assessed: Students are assessed with established industry instruments, College-developed instruments, portfolios, and/or other appropriate means as established by the statewide program curriculum committees. When Students Are Assessed: Assessment of technical/program outcomes is carried out in a manner appropriate for the instrument identified for the specific program in Appendix A - Approved Technical/Program Outcomes Measures. Students are assessed while enrolled in the established capstone courses and/or with such assessments as licensure examinations, after graduation from the College. At program or regional discretion, additional outcomes assessments may be incorporated at other points in the curriculum. When portfolio assessment is indicated or chosen, portfolios are developed within the capstone course in accordance with a student portfolio template designed by the appropriate curriculum committee.
