Laser Eye Surgery Your Vision Normal Sight: Myopia (short-sightedness) Hyperopia (long-sightedness) Astigmatism Presbyopia When light entering the eye is focused at a single point on the retina. The cornea and lens inside the eye bend or refract the light rays so that they focus at the correct point. With myopia, the light is focused in front of the retina and distant objects appear blurred. With hyperopia, the light is focused behind the retina. The image on the retina is blurred. Astigmatism is where the cornea is shaped like a rugby ball (oval) rather than a football (round). Light rays thus focus at different points causing blur. After the age of 40, the lens in the eye becomes more rigid and cannot change focus as easily as it once did, making it more difficult to read at close range. How will laser eye surgery change my life? Sport: convenience, improved performance, greater flexibility Contact lens difficulties: not being able to wear for the whole day, travelling. Everyday life: convenience, practicality, comfort, confidence Social: nights out without worrying about contact lenses and losing or breaking glasses Special Occasions: weddings, graduations, holidays Cost: significant long-term saving 8
Laser Eye Surgery What is laser eye surgery? At Optilase, we offer a comprehensive range of advanced treatments and customised procedures including LASIK, LASEK and IntraLase laser eye surgery as well as Standard and Advanced CustomVue WaveFront laser eye technology. The cornea at the front of the eye holds the greatest focusing ability of the eye. Laser eye surgery uses a cool beam Excimer laser to gently reshape the cornea, improving its focusing ability and removing the need for corrective eyewear. The entire procedure is completed within a matter of minutes. Procedures LASIK Treatment - What is LASIK? LASIK (Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) or IK for short is the most frequently performed laser procedure in the world. The key benefits of the LASIK procedure are a rapid recovery time, usually within 48 hours and little or no post operative discomfort. How does it work? Anaesthetic drops are applied, which have the effect of numbing your eye. A small flap is created on the surface of the cornea using blade free IntraLase technology or a precision surgical instrument called a microkeratome. The laser is then applied to the underlying surface to reshape your cornea and correct for your prescription. Your Surgeon then places the flap back down and your eye begins to heal. LASIK IntraLase Method The IntraLase method is the most advanced and accurate manner in which to create the flap during your LASIK procedure. This method uses Femtosecond (quadrillionth of a second) pulses of laser to form a layer of separation within the cornea to create the flap. The IntraLase method delivers outstanding results it has been shown to improve outcomes for more patients. Patients may experience faster recovery, fewer LASIK flap related complications and fewer induced higher order aberrations. Higher order aberrations may contribute to visual disturbances such as glare and halos. 9
Laser Eye Surgery Procedures LASEK Treatment - What is LASEK? LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy) or EK for short, is a well established method of preparing the surface of the eye for laser eye surgery in patients for whom LASIK is not recommended. The decision as to which procedure is best for you will be made in consultation with your Laser Optometrist and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon. How does it work? Anaesthetic drops are applied, which have the effect of numbing your eye. The surface layer of cells (Epithelium) of your eye is softened using an Ethanol solution and gently moved aside. The laser is then applied to the underlying surface to reshape your cornea and correct your prescription. A contact lens is put in place over your cornea for a period of five days to provide comfort and protection to the surface as it heals. Standard vs. Advanced CustomVue WaveFront Standard Treatment This uses the results of the prescription obtained during your assessment with your Optilase Laser Optometrist and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon to reshape your cornea. This method has been used since the 1980 s and results are equivalent to your vision with glasses or contact lenses in over 90% of cases. What is Advanced CustomVue WaveFront? Just like a fingerprint, your vision is unique to you. Advanced CustomVue WaveFront corrects your vision according to the individual imperfections in your eye. This means that each laser treatment is specific to the individual. The eye is scanned by the WaveScan to generate an accurate map of how light passes through your eye. This results in measurements 25 times more accurate than obtained during a routine sight test and provides measurements of both your prescription and the natural imperfections (higher order aberrations) unique to each eye. Such aberrations may also have a significant impact on vision and have been linked to glare and halos, which cause your vision to appear poorer at night than during the day. Before WaveFront, surgeons would perform LASEK and LASIK using standard measurements to correct vision. Now, the WaveFront technology can correct the specific imperfections in each eye with the potential to correct the vision to a level better than that possible with glasses or contact lenses. 10

Implant Options Implant Options This procedure, deemed by the World Health Organisation to be the most successful surgery ever performed, has undergone revolutionary advances since the modern technique was established in 1967. It is now estimated that 14 to 16 million operations are performed worldwide every year. This heritage combined with innovative new technology allows individuals, who are unsuitable for laser vision correction, the opportunity to say Goodbye glasses. An Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL) is a corrective lens that is implanted into the eye. Originally these lenses were developed to replace the natural lens of the eye which had become clouded due to a cataract. As technology has developed, both in terms of the surgical method and the lenses themselves, Intra-Ocular lenses have increasingly and highly successfully been used for elective refractive surgery to reduce dependency on glasses or contact lenses. At Optilase, we are proud to offer a comprehensive range of refractive services. We aim to ensure you make an informed decision regarding this life changing procedure and that you have access to the ongoing care and support you need. In partnership with Auralia Clinic, we are committed to offering you the highest standards of customer service and patient care. Auralia Clinic has an unrivalled reputation founded on experience and expertise devoted to the art of surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures and treatments. How will IOL s change my life? Age: difficulty reading newspapers, books. Sport: convenience, improved performance, greater flexibility Contact lens difficulties: not being able to wear for the whole day, evenings out Everyday life: convenience, practicality, comfort, confidence Social: nights out without worrying about contact lenses and losing or breaking glasses Special Occasions: weddings, graduations, holidays Cost: significant long-term saving Unsuitable for Laser Eye Surgery 14
What is RLE? Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) Implant Options The basic premise of RLE surgery is the removal and replacement of the natural crystalline lens of the eye with an artificial lens, thus correcting vision and reducing dependency on glasses or contact lenses. How does it work? The first step in the process involves the creation of a small incision into the edge of the cornea. Modern RLE surgery utilises a procedure known as Phacoemulsification to reduce and remove the natural lens. The device to perform this is inserted through the small incision made in step 1. The folded IOL is then inserted into the eye. The IOL is then unfolded and accurately positioned inside the capsule from which the natural lens was removed. The small incision heals rapidly and requires no sutures (stitches) in the majority of cases. RLE Options Monofocal Multifocal Accommodating Monofocal IOL s such as the Softec HD were the first design of IOL s, and are still used in many patients. As the name suggests, they provide a single range of correction allowing for either distance correction or in some cases, monovision, where one eye is set for far and one for near vision. Multifocal IOL s such as the Tecnis are fast becoming the preferred lens choice for most IOL patients as they offer a wider range of visual correction than monofocal options. This is achieved by having multiple zones on each lens which focus vision for either distance or near. Accommodating lenses such as the Tetraflex are lenses which adjust their position in the eye to allow changing of focus between distance and near objects. These provide fantastic distance and intermediate vision for tasks such as driving, sport, computers, etc, and very good reading ability, such as newspapers etc. Advantages: 1. Cost effective 2. Minimal post-operative glare 3. Wide range of correction possibilities Advantages 1. Excellent distance vision 2. Excellent near vision 3. Quick adaptation to lenses Advantages: 1. Excellent distance vision 2. Excellent intermediate vision 3. Little or no glare issues for night time driving Disadvantages 1. Single focus correction in each eye 2. Limited near and intermediate vision 3. Higher dependency on near correction post-operatively than premium lens designs Disadvantages: 1. Limited intermediate vision in some cases 2. Higher possibility of night glare concerns for driving Disadvantages: 1. Near vision adaptation may take longer to achieve 2. May still require reading glasses for fine print, poor light conditions etc 15
Implant Options Phakic Intra-Ocular Lenses (PIOL) What is PIOL? Phakic Intra-Ocular Lens surgery involves the insertion of an artificial implant into your eye, behind the cornea and in front of the natural lens (Anterior Chamber) in order to attempt to correct your farsightedness or nearsightedness, so that your natural vision will be improved, thereby reducing your dependency on glasses or contact lenses. This procedure is primarily used for patients between the ages of 21 and 40. This procedure can be thought of as placing a contact lens in the eye instead of on the eye. How does it work? A small incision is made in the cornea, under local anaesthetic. The lens is inserted. The lens is accurately positioned and attached to the Iris. What are the benefits? Reduced dependency on spectacles or contact lenses Improved visual field compared to glasses Improved comfort and convenience over contact lenses Wide range of correction options available Maintain the natural focussing ability of the eye for near and intermediate vision Longstanding, safe, successful procedure with rapid healing Pricing for Intra-Ocular surgery Occasionally your Surgeon may advise a combination of IOL s to achieve the best possible outcome for your unique visual requirements. This will be discussed in detail during your assessment and pre-operative consultation, where the final costs will be confirmed. Prices start from 1,195 per eye. At Optilase, we make use of state-of-the art Verisyse and Veriflex lenses for our PIOL patients. Called one of the most amazing inventions of 2004 by Time magazine, the Verisyse lens implant has been used in Europe for nearly a decade with more than 150,000 Verisyse lenses having been safely implanted worldwide. 16

Saving sight in partnership with At Optilase, we believe that sight is a basic human right and that everyone including those in the world s poorest countries should have access to the treatment and eye care that they need to enable them to see. Optilase and Sightsavers Partnership Sightsavers works tirelessly to help cure people who have reversible eye conditions as well as prevent people from becoming needlessly blind. On April 1st 2011, Optilase signed a partnership agreement with Sightsavers, whereby Optilase will contribute funds and expertise to Sightsavers for three years specifically to help Sightsavers construct an eye department at Nampula Central Hospital in Nampula, Mozambique and to help train their local eye care experts and volunteers. The aim of Sightsavers programme in Nampula is to strengthen the capacity of the Central Hospital so that it can deliver the full range of eye care services to treat the 1.3 million people currently affected by blindness and visual impairment in Nampula Province and to meet the eye care needs of the people living in the surrounding Province. To do this, Sightsavers needs two things: funding to help build the eye department at the hospital and skills training for the various levels of ophthalmic personnel working within the project. The current eye care centre is severely overcrowded and unable to cope with the large numbers wishing to receive cataract surgery, other eye surgery and refractive services. How you can get involved? We are keen to do our part and we are encouraging people to get behind the Sightsavers initiative. You can do that, by donating in any of our clinics or log onto www.sightsavers.ie. For more information on the Sightsavers partnership, you can email info@optilase.com. 19
