Introduction Ensuring business continuity simply and securely. Data is the lifeblood of business today. If and when an IT system fails, organizations need to restore data and applications rapidly, without significant service interruptions and without loss of information. On average, however, it takes organizations eighteen and a half hours to recover data after an outage 1. Considering the average cost of downtime is approximately US$5,600 per minute, the stakes are extremely high 2. And if data recovery fails (which is typically the case for one in five data recovery jobs 3 ), the organization can lose critical information. But what if you could ensure that at most only a few minutes of data would be lost during failures? What if at any moment your administrators could perform a nearly instant recovery and restoration of applications? And what if all incremental backups were validated, so your administrators no longer had to worry about failed backups? Dell data protection software solutions help turn these what-if scenarios into reality. With Dell solutions, you can back up data and applications continuously, so there are never more than a few minutes of data at risk. Data can be restored near-instantaneously. And automated processes for validating and verifying the integrity of data help to ensure the success of each and every recovery. Dell offers a broad portfolio of solutions to protect data and deliver rapid recoverability across physical, virtual and cloud environments. With Dell data protection software solutions, you can improve protection and recoverability without adding excessive costs or complexity. 1 Forrester Research, Wake-Up Call: You Aren t Ready For A Disaster, February 9, 2011. 2 Ponemon Institute, Calculating the Cost of Data Center Outages, February 2011, http://www.ponemon.org/local/upload/file/2011%20cost_of_data_ Center_Outages.pdf 3 ESG Research Report, Trends in Data Protection Modernization, August 2012. Challenges V
Data growth: Requiring efficient solutions to protect rising data volumes Organizations today are experiencing tremendous data growth, with data volumes increasing anywhere from 40 to 60 percent a year 4. Many organizations are looking to leverage that data to address key business goals. By applying business intelligence and analytics to data, organizations can help improve the customer experience, increase operational efficiency and reduce risks. Backing up and successfully recovering such large amounts of data presents significant challenges for IT groups. Not only do they need to provide sufficient storage capacity to accommodate growth, they also need to accelerate the frequency of backups, minimize the potential performance impact experienced by users and avoid having data offline when users need it. More than 50 percent of all installed workloads today are running as virtual machines, according to one estimate. Increasingly, those environments also include mission-critical applications. Organizations are virtualizing databases, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and key line-of-business applications in addition to messaging, collaboration and other business applications. Organizations need solutions that can accommodate the unique backup requirements of a virtualized environment, support multiple hypervisors and efficiently manage the backup of virtualized environments alongside physical environments. These solutions must be robust enough to adequately protect critical enterprise data while meeting recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs). Cloud computing: Integrating backup with the cloud IT groups must also find solutions that can accommodate the cloud computing environments that they are increasingly deploying to maximize IT agility and flexibility. According to one estimate, 84 percent of companies are running at least some infrastructure or applications in the cloud 7. Some organizations hope to use public cloud based storage as a tier in their backup strategy or as an alternative to physical off-site disaster recovery sites. Yet they will have to address a number of challenges, such as ensuring data security and privacy. They might also face data retrieval challenges if a service provider becomes insolvent in the future. Meanwhile, organizations searching for efficient and effective ways to back up applications running in private clouds face many of the same backup challenges found in virtualized environments. Virtualization: Navigating the unique backup challenges of virtualized environments The virtualization of IT infrastructures presents additional data protection challenges. More than 50 percent of all installed workloads today are running as virtual machines (VMs), according to one estimate 5. Many of those environments run multiple hypervisors. Approximately 25 percent of organizations have three or more hypervisors installed, whereas 5 percent have only one 6. 4 IDC, Worldwide Data Protection and Recovery Software 2011 2015 Forecast, July 2011, http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerid=229395#. Overcoming a 50-percent failure rate and gaining a 140-percent return on investment Challenge Headquartered near Richmond, Virginia, Village Bank needed to protect a large volume of data, including all of the data from company emails, mortgage applications, client accounts and more. Yet the IT group was faced with backup failure rates of up to 50 percent. Solution The bank implemented AppAssure for these and other backup and recovery challenges. Results Accelerated backup and recovery processes from hours or days to just minutes Increased backup granularity Reduced storage capacity needs by more than 27 percent Saved nearly US$90,000 and achieved a 140 percent return on investment Accelerating backup and recovery Challenge salutec, a German IT services provider that specializes in provisioning security and virtualization systems, needed a data protection solution for its VMware-based environment. The company wanted a solution that could help speed backup and restore processes. It also sought more flexible recovery options so administrators could restore individual files and emails as well as Microsoft Exchange Server mailboxes and entire VMs for salutec customers. [The company] reduced backup times from 12 hours to 7 as well as recovered mailboxes in 30 minutes instead of one day. Solution The company implemented: vranger Pro for its straightforward approach to VM backup, replication and recovery Recovery Manager for Exchange for its ability to restore individual, message-level items vreplicator to minimize data loss in the event of a crash vfoglight to monitor VM performance XIII
Results Reduced backup times from 12 hours to seven Recovered mailboxes in 30 minutes instead of one day Achieved 100 percent ROI by resolving issues quickly and easily Reducing backup and recovery times with NetVault Backup Challenge The RUAG Group is an international aerospace and defense technology company with production sites in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Hungary and the United States. As it merged IT departments and united previously incompatible backup processes across 21 sites, the company needed to accelerate backup and achieve faster, more flexible recoveries. Solution RUAG migrated to NetVault Backup in two months across all sites with no adverse impact on daily business or service-level agreements. Results Reduced backup workloads by 93 percent Cut recovery times cut in half Saved 30 percent of storage capacity, even as the company s server count grew from 350 to 500 servers Minimized training and expertise requirements by replacing multiple, disparate backup processes with a single solution Accelerating recovery and maintaining SOX compliance Challenge The Continental Group, Inc. the largest property management company in Florida needed a new backup and recovery solution to support a recently rebuilt distributed infrastructure. The company s previous tape backup system often required costly third-party services to convert unreadable tapes to DVDs for data recovery. The new solution had to be more cost-effective and also more reliable to help ensure ongoing compliance with government regulations. Solution After considering a number of possible solutions, the company chose SonicWALL Continuous Data Protection (CDP) appliances. The appliances are deployed in the primary data center, at corporate headquarters and at three regional offices. Results Consolidated backups that span a wide range of key business data and applications Protected branch office data by backing it up to the central data center Accelerated recovery for a 30 GB volume from one day to 15 minutes Gained granular recovery that lets administrators recover single files when necessary Maintains compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), which mandates recovery on demand XIV
