Basic Facts 96% of fish, 100% of surface water and 33% of major aquifers contain one or more pesticides. US Geological Survey 2006, compiled 1992-2001 2001 studies As adults, our children may have an average of 91 chemical contaminants in their bodies, fully one-fifth of which are pesticide-related, and including known carcinogens, neurotoxins, reproductive toxins or endocrine disruptors. And Up to 1 in 4 children in cities have asthma (6% nationally). Cockroaches, dust mites, pesticides are prime causes/triggers. Childhood asthma treatment costs $3.2 billion per year! Centers for Disease Control New York City childhood asthma hospitalization rates are 3-43 4 time the national average NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene 4

IPM Does Work! IPM contract specs and oversight reduces pesticide use and pest complaints by 90%. Greene and Breisch, J. Econ. Entomol., 2002 IPM schools had little pesticide residue vs. conventionally treated schools which had residues on baseboards and walls. Williams et al., J. Econ. Entomol., 2005 IPM training model in ten school districts reduced pesticide applications by 71% and pest complaints by 78%. Gouge et al., American Entomologist, 2006 5

Schools Are Not Alone Hospitals, nursing care facilities Parks, playgrounds Aircraft Animal research facilities Zoos, pet stores and aquariums Museums Computer facilities Child care facilities There are far more sensitive environments than schools. However, children do spend the vast majority of their time in school buildings during their early lives. Pesticides whether they are insecticides or disinfectants can impact the health of child and in some case adults too. 6

In the past each department has focused solely on their own objectives. However, with IPM you can incorporate all your programs into one making the environment safer for staff and lease hospitable to pests. 7

A definition: IPM is a strategy using multiple control tactics to ensure that: pest populations are managed at acceptable levels risks to people, other non-target organisms and the environment are minimized the pest control program is practical and economical 9

Common Pests in Schools Cockroaches: Skin fragments and feces are the most common cause of asthma in urban youth. Ants: Fire ant stings cause several human deaths per year. Rodents: Deadly hantavirus is transmitted by rodent urine and feces. Other pests that often plague schools are head lice, termites, spiders, bees, wasps, and much more. 10

Do you know your pests Fruit fly breeds in rotting fruit, syrups, vegetables Moth fly breeds on fungus in drains, under cracked tiles House fly breeds in manure, garbage These are all flies, but each species can represent a different maintenance issue. Fruit flies generally can be found in kitchen areas and around dumpsters. In some cases they can also be found around soda machines and vending machines. Moth flies are most commonly associated with sewer drains. If you find these guys bussing you in the kitchen or bathroom, chances are you have a cracked sewer pipe. Finally the common house fly can come in with the garbage or if you have a campus close to an agricultural producer, city dump or someplace else that has a high garbage problem, these guys can cause a commotion in the school building. 12

Based on what your sticky traps revel will determine when and where you may need to make a pest control treatment. If your contractor is not offering this service as part of your pest control program they are not doing IPM. 15

Pest prevention Single most important component of pest management program Pest-proofing, repair, maintenance of buildings Good building practices What do you look for? Many school systems have a preventative maintenance program, but does your staff look for holes the size of dime or larger? When a work order comes in to fix a door sweep does your staff know why that s important? 18

All Exterior doors need sweeps, which can reduce pest complaints by 65%. To a mouse, ant or occasional invader, this door is wide open. 19

Sanitation. Clutter makes it impossible to clean and inspect, and provides harborage for many kinds of pests. When your staff calls you to rid them of a pest problem can you do that when the area looks like this? It takes everyone cooperating to eliminate pest problems. 20

Broken drain covers allow pests like roaches and Norway rats to gain access to the building Build them out! Dirty drains provide food and breeding sites for drain flies, fruit flies, cockroaches. Hard to reach, or hidden drains are often neglected. What do your floor drains look like in your district. How often are they cleaned? Did you know there are microbial scum digesting products that can be applied to the drain to eliminate the organic matter that bugs need to thrive. 21

Education Staff Teachers Administrators Parents Students Educating the school community about your IPM program is the best way to reduce pest complaints and the unnecessary use of pesticides. Educating everyone about IPM can help you maintain your buildings better, allows everyone to feel part of the program, and explains to them that they can contribute to the problem without realizing it. 24

How to Maintain Your Program Have the school board adopt an IPM policy statement Appoint an IPM Coordinator to ensure program efficiency Have a committee to make it easier on everyone Are school employees licensed to make applications Or can anyone do this? Review your bid specifications Does your bids request routine treatments to kitchens? Do you receive monthly reports on sticky traps?
