We are proud to start 2013 with Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and César nominations to Kon-Tiki, Headhunters and Oslo, August 31st. Northern thrills In 2013, 24 new Norwegian features will be premiered. Norwegian children s films are well-known for taking their young audiences seriously, and they are awarded at festivals worldwide. It is therefore a pleasure to see that seven of the new films are made for our youngest audiences. Casper and Emma Best Friends, Ploddy the Police Car on the Case and Hocus Pocus, Alfie Atkins will delight the youngest, and our heroes from Pinchliffe Grand Prix will have the honour of concluding the Norwegian film year with Solan & Ludvig Christmas in Pinchliffe. 2013 will also give cinematic life to two classics of Norwegian literature. After 115 years and many attempts comes the first Norwegian-language adaptation of Knut Hamsun s novel, Victoria, scripted and directed by Torun Lian. Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will start the shooting for Beatles, from Lars Saabye Christensen s 1984 novel. Hisham Zaman, who directed the award-winning short, Bawke, is ready with his feature debut from Kurdistan-Berlin-Oslo, Before Snowfall. After the Oslo trilogy, Erik Poppe has moved outside Norway to film A Thousand Times Good Night, a drama starring Juliette Binoche. In recent years thrillers have been a strong attraction in Norwegian cinema. Now Insomnia-director Erik Skjoldbjærg will shortly release Pioneer, a thriller from the beginning of the Norwegian oil rush, with Headhunters star Aksel Hennie among the divers 500 metres under sea level. In mid winter the German illusionist Dirk Ohm arrives in the small town Grong, a place ridden by the disappearance of a young local woman Maria. In 2007 his short film Spandex Man opened the Tromsø International Film Festival. His last short film was The Croquet Match (2008). The world described in this tale is not at all like our world. The dungeons are gloomier, the rich and their sons meaner, the parents much more self-centered, the crazy inventors inventions crazier. And the beast that lives in the sewer system, brooding on revenge, could easily be a giant anaconda. In this world, the friendship between two lonely children is perhaps even more important than it is in our world. Doctor Proctor s Fart Powder is the story about two lonely (and a bit weird) children that finds friendship by helping Doctor Proctor to get his recognition. In addition to this, Akselsen is writing and directing three other projects, currently in development. The Exorcist in the 21st Century takes the viewer into the unknown and sinister world of exorcism in the Catholic Church. Constanza, a Colombian woman, is desperately looking for Fr. Fortea s help. She claims to have been possessed by demons for nearly 15 years and she goes through a ritual of exorcism before she sees the Spanish exorcist as a last hope for spiritual liberation. Fata Morgana is a film about dreams, friendship and survival, with the walls around Europe as its backdrop. Filmmaker Zaradasht Ahmed came to Norway as a refugee in 1995. On a trip to Morocco in 2007, in the port of Tangier, he meets the harraga, young men, who have developed extreme methods to fulfil their dream: reaching the coast of Spain. Through Fata Morgana, we meet these fortune hunters and gain a rare insight into their lives. Zaradasht is fascinated by them. He ventures into their world, taking us into a landscape only those who have burned all bridges know. The director, Zaradasht Ahmed (1968), turns into a character in the film. His background and, not least, his inquisitiveness and fascination guide us as we enter this world of his. Zaradasht fled from the First Gulf War; he had just graduated from the Kirkuk Institute of Technology in Northern Iraq. He wandered through the minefields in the Kurdish part of Iraq, and eventually reached Syria and later Lebanon. After five years on the run, he arrived in Norway in 1995 as a quota refugee. He still lives here, he has passed 40, and feels he has to move on. Life in Norway is safe and comfortable, but something is lacking. Fata Morgana lies to the south, beyond Gibraltar. Here he meets someone who reminds him of the dream he had as a young man. 54 55

The Trilogy portrays human existence with Roy Andersson s characteristically offbeat humour and philosophical wit. Like an anthropologist describing a strange, yet beautiful society, Roy Andersson magnifies the idiosyncrasies of mankind so that one may see one s self the way one really is. Inspired by historical events and the classic works of art and literature, The Living Trilogy creates a vast mosaic of moving paintings in Andersson s very strong and completely unique visual style. In a country where killers are celebrated as heroes, the filmmakers challenge unrepentant death squad leaders to dramatize their role in genocide. The hallucinatory result is a cinematic fever dream, an unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass-murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. Elsa, a middle-aged milliner and part-time clairvoyant runs a smartest little hat shop in the heart of Helsinki. She has total control of her life until the man she once loved and lost suddenly reappears from the past and from the dead. Jan is in town to perform at the Festival with his Czech dance orchestra. For more than two decades Elsa has believed the man to be dead. Initially, Elsa wants to stay away from Jan and especially from the festival. But Jan is persistent, persuasive and charming. The intoxicating blend of hot August nights, music, dance and the ice-cold political paranoia if the Age of the Iron Curtain form the circumstances in which Elsa has to make her final choice. Youthful, unsuspecting Iris is recruited from a juvenile home, to serve the men of high society. When the utopian image of 70 s Sweden is challenged, government power men step in to restore it. The enormous power of the Ganges erodes national borders, villages and the lives of men. Two young boys, Rubel and Sofikul were neighbours before the river Ganges swept their homes away. Now both of their families have made their new home on Char, a small island in the Ganges and smuggling rice is their only hope of survival. A film about a woman who doesn t exist. Moroccan Hind was raped and consequently denied an official identity she has no other choice but to work as a prostitute and traditional wedding dancer, but despite the odds of her situation, she refuses to give up her dream of dignity, motherhood and love. This is a story of modern day outlaws, children of prostitutes, abandoned child brides and those who have had to escape to the fringes of patriarchal Moroccan society. Through the eyes of one young woman we see a life of constant struggle, but also a life free of the society s norms and boundaries. 66 67

One day Helena s cousin Joaquin, just out of rehab for drug abuse, comes to stay with them. Deshora evolves into an intimate drama of fate between the three characters, in which the two men involuntarily develop a fascination for each other a taboo in this macho culture. Through the eyes of a woman, Sarasola-Day enters a universe of rituals, bodies and sensuality. 68 The end of the successful trilogy seen by one million Swedes at the movies, based on Jens Lapidus novels. One day, driving aimlessly around the outskirts of town after a trivial domestic quarrel, a man named Tomas accidentally hits and kills a child. Will he be able to move on? Freak Out! tells the untold story of a group of middleclass kids who in 1900 revolted against their time and started the original alternative community Monte Verità. A community based on veganism, feminism, pacifism and free love. Through their eyes we unfold the uncanny similarities between our time and what they revolted against in the early 1900s. Just like 60 000 other young Swedes Ana Dino Dinovic (23) has fled the mass unemployment of her home country for a new life in Oslo. But the new life isn t what Dino expected and now she s caugt in a destructive spiral of day-to-day jobs, lack of money and hard partying. After breaking her arm, she is fired, and gets a job as a housekeeper in a home on the verge of chaos. Steffen (45), once a professional tennis player, now owns a restaurant about to go bankrupt. Since his wife left, Steffen is alone with two children. His seriously overweight son Kristian (16) is no longer speaking to him. The family is falling apart completely. And Dino s arrival changes everything. During a few sultry summer weeks, Steffen and Kristian find themselves competing in a way nobody could have predicted. A loaded triangular drama forms with fatal consequences. Beaten up, bruised, and scared, a young writer hides in a Stockholm apartment, writing the story of its disappeared inhabitants: the flamboyant and charismatic Morgan brothers. It all began a year earlier, when he was rooming with Henry Morgan, a boxer, piano player, composer, bartender, and old-fashioned gentleman with a Gatsby-like capacity for turning life into a feast and absolutely no talent for keeping secrets. The two friends led the high-life in Stockholm until the day Henry s younger brother Leo a star poet, drunk, political provocateur showed up. Leo drags them into a scandal involving illegal weapons and gangsters, and soon the three men find themselves unwittingly and irreversibly trapped in a dangerous plot. 69

Carl Boenish dies doing the very thing he created and loved. His wife repeats his treacherous act and lives, thus telling others it is ok to go on. And go on they do, transcending limitations to taste the dream that one man could only begin to experience. The film is set in the Guarani Indians unexplored forest areas in Bolivia, where we follow the Spanish filmmaker Andres in his search for the circumstances surrounding a Swedish documentary film made in the area a hundred years earlier. The result is a mystical, existential journey into the lives of both the Indians and the filmmaker. Torgny Segerstedt was one of the leading journalists in Sweden in the 20th century. He fought a one man battle against Hitler and the Nazi regime until his death in 1945 and during these tumultuous times his private life was marked by a world in chaos, as he falls in love with his friend s wife while married himself. The Last Sentence weaves together the story of a psychological love story with a portrayal of the political situation Sweden found itself in during the Second World War. A gripping, dramatic and poetic tale about a man who could not be silenced. Polarnight on the brink of the arctic ocean. A German family emigrates to start anew, in the most Northern city in the world, Hammerfest. Instead, a horrible accident questions everything. What role does guilt play in regard to our happiness? Over a period of three years, Afghan civilians have filmed their lives behind the frontier in the war torn Afghan province of Helmand. They invite us into their homes, their hopes, and their heartbreaks, and their stories form a rich tapestry of an Afghanistan that never makes it to the news. It is Nagieb Khaja, a Danish director of Afghan origin, who has provided them with cameras, as international media seldom leaves the relative security of the cities. The film tells the story of a woman who flees her family with her two daughters, embarking on a long and exhausting journey. A courageous, contemporary story about women s struggle for freedom and independence in Pakistan. 70 71

TPB AFK is a documentary about three computer addicts who redefined the world of media distribution with the file-sharing network The Pirate Bay. Just how did hacker Gottfrid Svartholm-Warg, Internet activist Peter Sunde and beer aficionado Fredrik Neij cause the White House to threaten the Swedish government with trade sanctions? TPB AFK tells the inside story of how a cluster of hacktivists built the Internet s largest file-sharing site. Europe 1990, the Berlin wall has just crumbled: Katrine, raised in East Germany, now living in Norway since more than 20 years, is a war child, the result of a love relationship between a Norwegian woman and a German occupation soldier. Katrine enjoys a happy family life in Norway. But when a lawyer asks her to witness in a trial against the Norwegian state, she resists. The Gurkhas began soldiering for the British colony in India 200 years ago, following a war in which the Nepalis almost defeated the mighty British. Impressed with the fighting prowess of the khukuri-wielding Nepalis, Britain began recruiting them. In the following centuries, these soldiers have seen more continuous fighting than any in the world. Despite the fact that the number of Gurkhas being for the British Army has dwindled from the 200,000 who fought during the Second World to a couple hundred, young Nepalis, however, continue to be lured to become Gurkhas. Today s potential recruits are not rustic hill boys but a new generation of urban-based Nepalis with a school or higher education, attracted by wages, but also drawn by the myth and glamour, as well as the adventure and danger, associated with the Gurkhas, in spite of the very real prospect of dying in the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq. 74 75

Norwegian Film Institutions norwegian film institutions Norwegian Film Institute Film & Kino The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) operates under the authority of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. The Institute is the Norwegian government s administrative body for the film sector and its advisor on film policy issues. The Board of the NFI is appointed by the Ministry. The NFI s 2013 budget is NOK 550 million (approx. EUR 68.7 million), of which NOK 446 million (approx. EUR 55.8 million) is earmarked for audiovisual development, production and distribution. The Institute also offers personal grants, training and talent development for the film industry. The NFI represents and promotes Norwegian feature films, shorts, documentaries, games and TV-series at festivals and film cultural events nationally and abroad and provides statistics and facts about Norwegian film and cinema. The NFI is responsible for facilitating and promoting Norway as an attractive shooting location for foreign producers through Film Commission Norway. The NFI represents Norway in the Council of Europe s fund for coproduction of films, Eurimages, as well as in the European Audiovisual Observatory. Norway joined the European Convention on Co-Production on 1 November 2009. The NFI also participates in a number of other international cooperative efforts for the audiovisual sector, including the European Film Academy, European Film Promotion, Filmkontakt Nord and Scandinavian Films. Film professionals and international audiences can find more information on Norwegian films through www.norwegianfilms.no and the Norwegian Film database Film & Kino is a combination of a member organisation for Norwegian municipalities and an industry organisation for the cinema and video industries. The organisation, which was established in 1917, administers the Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation and also runs the Mobile Cinema and S-Kino. Around the world, cinemas are usually owned by private companies. In Norway, however, most cinemas are owned by the municipalities. As a member organisation for the municipalities, Film & Kino is looking after their interests concerning film, the running of cinemas and video activities. Membership is open to all municipalities. The organisation is governed by a national convention with delegates from both the municipalities and the cinema and video industries. Helps ensure public access to new and relevant films Film & Kino s mission is to ensure the public of the entire country access to new and relevant films, either through regular theatrical releases, at festivals or through DVD. The organisation shall further both the big movie theatre experience and a purposeful use of the DVD format, as well as being a guarantor of quality and diversity. Film & Kino administers a number of support initiatives for films. About 30 per cent of the films in regular theatrical release in Norway receive support from these initiatives. In 2011 all Norwegian movie theatres became digital. During the next few years, the following up of the digitalising of Norwegian movie theatres will be one of the most important tasks for the organisation. Film & Kino s fields of operations are: > Following up the digitalisation of Norwegian movie theatres > Support the import and distribution of films > Main executive responsibility for the government s film culture and educational programmes for children and youth > The official financing of Norwegian film festivals > Developing the cinema and video industries > Give advice and develop know-how > Information and contact point for the public Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation Film & Kino administers the Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation, which was established in 1970. Norwegian law instructs this foundation to charge a certain percentage of cinema ticket sales as well as a levy on video sales and rentals. Film & Kino s activities for the cinema and video industries are then financed by this foundation. The Mobile Cinema The Mobile Cinema is Film & Kino s arrangement for the screening of films in locations without a regular movie theatre. The Mobile Cinema brings all necessary equipment and can screen films on all kinds of premises all over the country. In addition, Film & Kino offers programming assistance for small cinemas without resources to maintain such a function. This arrangement is called S-Kino. 84 85
Norwegian Film Institutions ADDRESSES Regional Film Funds and Film Centres By the end of 2011 all districts in Norway are covered by regional, public resource centres for film, apart from Oslo, the capital. These are film centres, film funds and/or film commissions. They all have regional as well as governmental support. The national goals are to stimulate strengthened production infrastructure, professionality and continuity in all parts of the production and increased talent development. There are 8 film centres, 6 regional film funds and 3 regional film commissions, of whom some are co-located regionally. In addition there is a national film commission. Furthermore FilmCamp function as film fund, film commission and production centre serving productions from all over, also internationally. International Sami Film Centre serves the Sami population all over Norway as well as those living in Sweden, Finland and Russia. The Film Centres are based on cultural grounds. Their main mission is to support development and production of short films and documentaries, and to raise competence among professionals and spot, cultivate and support young talents. The Film Funds finance all genres of films. ASSOCIATIONS & INSTITUTIONS Agicoa Norge Dronningens gt 8 A P.O.
