Introduction Welcome and thank you for your interest in enrolling as a non-degree student at the Boston University School of Public Health for the spring 2014 semester. Please read this entire packet carefully. Registration forms will be accepted from 9:00 AM Tuesday, December 3, 2013 to 5:00 PM Friday, January 3, 2014. What is a non-degree student? A non-degree student is an individual who is not enrolled in a degree-granting program at Boston University. Non-degree students take courses that may apply to a School of Public Health degree in the future. They officially register, pay the same tuition, receive grades based on the same academic criteria, are subject to BUSPH student, academic, and disciplinary policies, and generate official academic records just like degree candidates. Non-degree students may complete up to two courses total at SPH. The minimum educational preparation required for participation in the non-degree program is an earned bachelor s degree, conferred prior to the first day of the spring semester, January 13, 2014. Prospective non-degree students who are not permanent residents or United States citizens must also be eligible to study in a part-time, non-degree status and must confirm their eligibility with the International Students and Scholars Office (http://www.bu.edu/isso/). Students may be asked to open a record with this office. Students who are returning in non-degree status from a previous semester and have already completed two courses may petition Chris Paal, Registrar and Jonathan Cote, Director of Admissions to exceed the two-course limit. The e-mail must be sent to Chris at cpaal@bu.edu and include specific information as to the student s highest earned degree, his or her plan to enroll in an SPH degree program and the timeline for seeking admission. Students who are part of specific BU or Medical Campus programs must include an e-mail of support from their Program Director. For more information about non-degree student registration, visit our web page at http://www.bu.edu/sph/students/resources/registrars-office/non-degree-students/. 3

Non-Degree Student Registration Overview DETERMINE IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO BE A NON-DEGREE STUDENT: Non-degree students must have earned a bachelor s degree and may not have already taken two courses as a non-degree student at SPH (including prior semesters). Prospective non-degree students who are not permanent residents or United States citizens must also be eligible to study in a part-time, non-degree status. While in most circumstances appropriate SPH classes will count towards degree requirements if the student is subsequently admitted to a degree program at the SPH, it is important to remember that there are minimum grade requirements for some courses and a five-year limit to counting courses. Non-degree students are not eligible for federal financial aid to help cover their tuition or living expenses. Alumni of SPH may consider either an alumni audit or non-degree registration. See page 7 for details of the SPH Alumni Education Program. PLAN: As graduate professionals, non-degree students should carefully consider their registration and payment options prior to submitting a registration form. All SPH students, including non-degree students, are expected to meet all published course pre-requisites and be able to attend all classes. Prior to submitting a registration form, potential non-degree students should review the class schedule at the end of this packet and pay careful attention to class enrollment pre-requisites and scheduled class meeting times. Students who are working are advised to get employer approval before registering. Students who expect to use tuition remission or reimbursement benefits to pay for tuition are strongly encouraged to confirm the availability of the benefits prior to registering. Spring semester bills are due and payable no later than January 31 regardless of the source of payment. SUBMIT A REGISTRATION FORM: Non-degree students must submit an online Non-Degree Student Registration Form to be considered for registration into an SPH course. The Non-Degree Student Registration Form will be at http://www.bu.edu/sph/students/resources/forms/. Forms will be accepted from 9:00 AM on Tuesday December 3, 2013 to 5:00 PM on Friday January 3, 2014. While they will be online, forms submitted prior to December 3 will be discarded. Late forms cannot be accepted. Students who submit a registration form for a course that does not have space available will be automatically placed on the course waitlist. Should a seat become available, the student will be notified via e-mail. Students who have been waitlisted for a course should not attend that course unless they have been instructed to do so by the SPH Registrar s Office. Students on a waitlist are not registered and do not have to pay for a class until they are officially registered. Non-degree students will receive a confirmation email when they are registered. The email will include next steps, such as opening a BU email account, obtaining a BU ID card, and purchasing course materials. Submitting a registration form does not constitute registration. 4

Requirements for Registration Boston University requires all students studying on Massachusetts campuses must provide a BUAlert phone number. Boston University requires all students to Settle their Financial Obligation each semester. Massachusetts law requires that all full-time and many part-time students be Immunized against a number of diseases in order to attend a university in the Commonwealth. The Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Law requires that all out-of-state students sign an acknowledgement that they have been informed of the law. (Compliance required in the Fall semester only). Check the Student Link to ensure you have met these requirements. Students not in compliance will be unable to register for future semesters. Checklist - Preparing for the Spring Semester After receiving their e-mail registration confirmation and before classes begin on January 13, new nondegree students are required to obtain a Boston University identification card, establish a BU e-mail address, and purchase course materials. Non-degree students from previous semesters and non-degree students who are current employees of BU retain their existing BU ID and e-mail address. Students may not access online resources such Blackboard Learn and the Student Link without an established Boston University email account. Picture ID A Medical Campus Picture ID is required to obtain an e-mail account and parking permit and is coded to allow entry into various Medical Campus buildings. It is the first item non-degree students should obtain as they prepare for the spring semester. The Medical Campus ID Office is at 710 Albany Street and is generally open 7:00AM-9:00AM and 12:30PM-3:00PM, Monday through Friday. Please call the ID Office at (617) 638-6879 to confirm office hours. Students and employees from the Charles River Campus may use their photo identification card from that campus, and should have the card updated at the Medical Campus ID Office for Medical Campus Building entry. Boston University E-Mail Account: After obtaining their student ID, new non-degree students should begin the process of obtaining an e- mail address by completing an online application at the Boston University web site, https://weblogin.bu.edu/accounts/create?template_extension=acs;_hostname=acs. 5

Once the online application is completed, students must present their current BU ID at any IT Help Office at the Charles River Campus or the Medical Campus. The Medical Campus location is he Learning Resources Center is located on the 12th floor of the Boston University School of Medicine Alumni Medical Library. The Medical Campus map on page 20 shows the Medical School location New non-degree students may also open their e-mail accounts in person at the Alumni Medical Library. Students are required to have their BU with them. For more information about using BU e-mail on the web, go to http://www.bu.edu/webmail/. Books and Materials The required textbook and reader list for spring semester classes is posted in January to the SPH website, http://www.bu.edu/sph/students/resources/courses/. Readers for SPH courses may be purchased at the Boston University Barnes and Noble Bookstore located at 660 Beacon Street, or on the Barnes and Noble website, http://bu.bncollege.com/. Textbooks may be purchased at the BU Barnes and Noble Bookstore or from the vendor of choice. Students must check the spring semester Course Book and Reader list to determine if a course in which they are registered has a pre-assignment, which is work to be completed before the first class. Classroom Assignments The classroom assignments list is posted to http://www.bu.edu/sph/students/resources/courses/ in early January. Most classrooms are located on the Medical Campus. Please see the map on page 20 for building locations. Blackboard & the Student Link Blackboard Learn and the Student Link are two separate web-based systems used by Boston University. Student Link (www.bu.edu/studentlink) is a secure, official Boston University server site that provides students with online access to their registration activity, grades, and unofficial transcript. The schedule on the Student Link is a student s official course schedule. Blackboard is a course-specific online tool used for dissemination of course information and documents. Review http://learn.bu.edu to determine which courses have a Blackboard site. Instructors who use Blackboard will post course documents and readings to Blackboard. The Blackboard system does not accurately reflect scheduling information or course grades. 6

The SPH Alumni Education Program Alumni of the School of Public Health may seek special permission through the Alumni Office to sit in on School of Public Health classes. Alumni are not registered for the class, so consequently no grade or evidence of attendance is generated. A fee is charged per class. Requests to participate in the Alumni Education Program should be made by January 3, 2014 and payment must be made to the Alumni Office prior to the start of the classes. Interested alumni should contact sphalum@bu.edu for more information. If alumni require a transcript of classes taken in spring 2014 or want classes taken to count towards another degree program, then they should register as Non-Degree students and pay the established per credit rate, $1,374 per credit for spring. Boston University Employee Tuition Remission Benefits BU employees interested in utilizing tuition remission benefits to pay for course tuition must work with their supervisor and Human Resources prior to registration to be sure that they are eligible for tuition remission. Eligible employees must first register, then apply for tuition remission. Employees who plan to end their employment at the end of the spring semester must be very cautious. Human Resources determines the start date and end date of benefits based on employment and are the source of information for these dates. Course Schedule and MPH Core Course Selection Master of Public Health degree students at BU School of Public Health must satisfy a core course requirement in each of six concentration areas: Biostatistics (BS704) Environmental Health (EH717) Epidemiology (EP713) Health Law, Bioethics, & Human Rights (LW719 or LW751) Health Policy & Management (PM702 or IH704) Social & Behavioral Science (SB721 or IH720) The following MPH concentrations offer two core course choices. Non-degree students should select the course that best meets their needs or the course they would select were they an MPH student. Health Law, Bioethics & Human Rights - LW719 or LW751: LW719, Essentials of Public Health Law (3 cr.) is appropriate for MPH students who are seeking a general introduction to the role of law in the design and implementation of public health programs and the protection of the health interests of 7

individuals and groups in society. Health Law, Bioethics, and Human Rights concentrators must take LW751, Public Health Law (4 cr.), which is taught only in fall. LW751 is also appropriate for students who wish to explore the American legal system and the major legal issues and problems confronting the US public health professional in greater depth. Students who are not United States citizens or permanent residents at the time of their matriculation into the MPH degree program are exempted from fulfilling the MPH health law core course requirement. Non-degree students must get permission of the instructor to enroll in either health law core course. Health Policy & Management PM702 or IH704: All HPM concentrators must take PM702 (3 cr.), Introduction to Health Policy and Management, to meet the health policy and management core course. International health concentrators, Masters International students, and international, nonresident students may take either IH704, International Public Health and Medical Care: A Systems Approach (4 cr.), or PM702 to meet the health policy & management core course requirement. Nondegree students who plan to apply for the IH concentration should not take PM702; they should wait and take IH704 once they are admitted. Social and Behavioral Sciences - SB721 or IH720: Social and Behavioral Sciences concentrators must successfully complete SB721, Introduction to Social and Behavioral Sciences (3 cr.). International health concentrators, MI students, and international, non-resident students that are not SB concentrators may take IH720, Social and Behavioral Sciences in International Public Health (4 cr.) or SB721 to fulfill the social and behavioral sciences requirement. Non-degree students who plan to apply for the IH concentration should not take SB721; they should wait and take IH720 once they are admitted. 8

General Registration Tips If you have any questions about the suitability of a course, contact the SPH Registrar s Office, 617-638-5057 or 638-4963, or via email Andrea (atingue@bu.edu) or Chris (cpaal@bu.edu). Some courses have pre-requisites and have been designed for students who are actively pursuing a degree. However, the courses might be very suitable for non-degree students who meet the prerequisites. Please see the Suggested Course List on page 11 for registration suggestions. Submit your non-degree registration form as soon as possible! Many of the courses recommended for non-degree students fill quickly. Please be patient as degree candidates do have priority. We will use the e-mail address that you provided in your Non-Degree Student Registration Form to contact you, so please make sure you provide a valid e-mail address and then check it frequently. Complete all sections of the Non-Degree Student Registration Form, available online on December 3, 2013 at http://www.bu.edu/sph/students/resources/forms/. Please do not use any symbols (&, /, etc.) or your form may not submit successfully. Do not contact the department or the instructor regarding closed classes; the registrar's office handles non-degree registration and course waitlists. Be careful as you adjust your schedule there will be financial ramifications! Part-time students are charged on a per-credit basis, so changes to a student s schedule will likely result in a change in tuition charges. Students should make sure to look at their updated student account summary through the Student Link if they make any registration changes. Payment is due in full by the published deadline. The deadline for payment for non-degree students is January 31, 2014. Students who cannot verify the amount due via the Student Link or students who need a printed invoice should contact Student Accounting Services at (617) 353-2264. Tuition is due by the published deadlines, whether the student has received a paper bill or not. All non-u.s. citizens and non-permanent residents, including cross-registering students from the Boston Consortium, must obtain approval from the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) prior to registration. The ISSO is located at 888 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, 617-353- 3565. ISSO permission must be forwarded via e-mail to the SPH Registrar's Office. International students must also meet the health requirements outlined on page 5. Please allow a minimum of three weeks processing time when you send in your registration form. We will contact you when it has been processed. Please do not contact the faculty or department offering courses unless we specifically ask you to obtain academic permission to take a class. 9

Student Communications and Yammer Welcome to the new world of student communications! BUSPH recently launched an online collaboration tool called Yammer. Yammer is a social network service that is similar to Facebook. Unlike Facebook, however, Yammer is designed specifically for organizations like a university and is great for internal collaboration and communications. It is also completely secure and private, since you ll be joining a network that consists solely of your BUSPH peers. Through groups and postings, you can meet, interact, and collaborate with your fellow students about matters both academic and social. Yammer can also serve as another method of reaching out to Student Services, Admissions, Career Services, Curriculum Coordinators and other Administrative groups at BUSPH. In January, you will receive an email to your bu.edu address inviting you to join the BUSPH Student Network. Just follow the instructions in the email to join the network. Once you are in Yammer, we will point you to some helpful video how-to's to get you started. The Yammer student network is only accessible via your BU email account, so please follow the directions in this packet and open up your BU account before classes start. If for some reason you didn t receive your Yammer invitation, send an email to Social Media Manager Meaghan Agnew (meaghans@bu.edu) and she will invite you into the network. She will also be announcing small-group trainings at a later date. We look forward to seeing you in Yammer! 10
