Ethan is widely recognized an authority on the effect of social media on the law. He recently authored Fire over Facebook: A Primer on Protected Social Media Activity in the Workplace and Best Practice Guide for Managing Employee Social Media Use. Ethan also authored the Social Media Guide for Lawyers, a legal guide on how lawyers can practically, ethically, and effectively use social media in their practice, and writes the Social Media Law and Order blog about the effect of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media on the law. Ethan has served as a source for social media and the law on several high profile news organizations, including CNN, NPR, and Thomson Reuters. Ethan is passionate about helping with all aspects of social media, Internet, and intellectual property related legal and business matters. He assists clients, individuals, and businesses navigate the legal risks inherent in using social media and the Internet in their business. He helps clients protect their online activities by preparing legally compliant website terms and conditions, privacy policies, and social media sweepstakes and contest rules. Ethan also helps clients secure their valuable intellectual property by preparing and prosecuting trademark applications, strengthening their copyright protection, developing strategies for protecting trade secrets, and prosecuting and defending his clients' interests in state and federal court. He works closely with his clients to develop effective solutions to social media and Internet related issues and assists businesses of all shapes and sizes in implementing and enforcing legally compliant social media policies and work rules to protect against potentially harmful online activities. Ethan has successfully resolved complex cases and legal issues involving trademark infringement, unfair competition, trade secrets, Internet jurisdiction, website disputes, and disputes over domain names and Internet activity. Ethan has also been recognized as a Rising Star by Florida Super Lawyers Magazine and as a Top Up and Comer by Florida Trend's Legal Elite since 2010. EDUCATION Ethan frequently presents and publishes articles on the effect of social media and the Internet on the law. Ethan developed a law school course on social media and the law and he has lectured at the University of Miami School of Law, Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center, Florida International University School of Law, and numerous legal, professional, and industry symposiums. Ethan received his Juris Doctor cum laude from Nova Southeastern University, Shepard Broad Law Center, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies, with honors from the University of Central Florida. While in law school, he served as the Chief Justice of the Moot Court Society and Associate Editor of the Nova Southeastern Law Review. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES Ethan currently serves as the President of the Dade County Bar Association Young Lawyers Section the largest voluntary bar association in Florida. Ethan leads a talented board of directors in implementing legal and community service programming designed to benefit lawyers of Miami-Dade County and to give back to the community. Ethan was first elected to serve as a member of the board of directors in June 2009 and has since served as the Young Lawyer Section's President-Elect, Secretary, Chair of its Pro Bono and Community Service Committee, Social Committee, and an advisor of its Homeless Outreach and Rainmakers Committees. He is also a founding member of the Dade County Bar Association Intellectual Property Committee and the Law and Technology Committee. Ethan also serves as Vice President of the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center's Alumni Association Board of Directors. Since being appointed to the board of directors in October 2008, Ethan has given back to his law school, fellow alumni, and the law center community while serving as its Secretary, Treasurer, a member of the association's Executive Committee and Chair of its Alumni Engagement Committee. Ethan was also selected as a member of the Meritas Leadership Institute s 2010-2011 class. Meritas is an established global alliance of independent, full-service law firms. The Meritas Leadership Institute is a year-long program that identifies future Meritas leaders, provides a forum for working with leaders of other Meritas firms, and facilitates the development of leadership skills. Ethan and his classmates examined the importance of social media and the law, focusing on how law firms are using tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, and their attitudes toward social media use. He also served as the Chair of the Leadership Institute s Promotions Committee and co-authored a monthly newsletter titled the Social Media Minute. In August 2013, Ethan co-authored Fire over Facebook? A Primer on Protected Social Media Activity in the Workplace and Best Practice Guide for Managing Employee Social Media Use. Fire over Facebook deciphers provides a primer on legal issues involving social media in the workplace. It states in plain English the complex concepts in recent National Labor Relations Board social media memoranda by simplifying several key concepts of labor and employment law as it relates to social media activity, analyzes how those concepts are applied to situations involving employee social media activity, and categorizes lawful and unlawful social media policies. Fire over Facebook also provides best practices for drafting, implementing, and enforcing an National Labor Relations Act-complaint social media policy. Ethan also co-authored the Social Media Guide for Lawyers a legal guide on how lawyers can practically, ethically, and effectively use social media in their practice. The Social Media Guide provides best practices for attorney and law firm social media use, a "how to" guide for popular social media platforms, and sample social media policies for law firms. He also authors the firm's Social Media Law and Order blog on the effect of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media on the law and tweets about social media and the law on Twitter. Additionally, Ethan is a member of the International Trademark Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Florida Bar Business Law Intellectual Property Section, and a past member of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Florida and the American Bar Association Section of Intellectual Property.
