Year 2010 Postgraduate Programmes Universidad de Zaragoza 1 - MASTER S DEGREES The official courses leading to the award of a Master s degree are intended to provide advanced specialized or multidisciplinary training, aimed at academic or professional specialization, or an introduction to research work leading to a doctorate programme and obtaining a PhD. The Master s courses are adapted to the European Higher Education Area and are given as ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits. Their duration ranges from 60 to 120 credits, and they end with the preparation of the final master project. The satisfactory completion of these courses entitles students to obtain the official qualification of the Master s degree. - 2 -

Access to the Master s degree Access to a Master s degree course can be requested by: Holders of an official degree from either a Spanish university or an equivalent higher education institution from the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that allows the holder to undertake a Master s degree course in the awarding country. All documents issued in foreign languages not habitually used in Spain must be translated into Castilian Spanish in accordance with current legislation. The translation into Spanish can be done: 1. By the Oficina de Interpretación de Lenguas (Language Interpretation Office) of the Spanish Ministry of the Exterior, C/. Oquendo 11 (Madrid). Tel. (+34) 917111908. 2. By UNESCO, the Office of the Centro Iberoamericano de Cooperación (Ibero-American Co-operation Office) or any other organization recognized in Spain. 3. By any Embassy or Consulate of the Spanish State abroad. 4. By the Embassy or Consulate in Spain of the country of which the applicant is a subject, or if applicable, where the document was issued. 5. By a sworn translator, duly authorized and registered in Spain. Access to a Master s degree with a recognized foreign higher education qualification Holders of a foreign higher education qualification, provided that it has already been legally recognized as equivalent to a qualification which allows direct admission, and in accordance with the procedure stated in current regulations. Access for holders of non-recognized higher education qualifications issued in a country outside the EHEA Holders of a foreign degree from educational systems outside the European Higher Education Area which does not need to be officially recognized, provided that they can show, following the procedures laid down by the Official Postgraduate Study Committee, that said degree provides an equivalent level of training to a Spanish degree and that this degree allows access to postgraduate education in the awarding country. The documents provided by these students must be translated in Spanish (if not written in one of the languages habitually used in Spain) and legally approved according to the procedure explained below. This can also be done online. IMPORTANT: Online applications will not be valid unless students send the printed and signed application form, and the documentation listed in the section admission documentation, by post to the university in the period stated. 2 - DOCTORATE Doctorate programme adapted to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA): The doctorate programme is intended to give students advanced training in research techniques. It can include courses, seminars and other activities directed at research training, and will include creating and presenting a doctoral thesis consisting of an original research project. The satisfactory completion of these courses entitles students to obtain the official qualification of DOCTOR from the University of Zaragoza. Structure of the doctorate programme in the European higher education area (EHEA) DOCTORATE PROGRAMMES MASTER S DEGREE (60 to 120 ECTS credits, 1 or 2 years) or another of the same level issued by an EHEA institution OFFICIAL QUALIFICATION ISSUED IN NON-EHEA COUNTRIES accredited as providing an equivalent level of training to a Master s degree and giving access to a doctorate programme -HOLDING 60 CREDITS OR MORE IN ONE OR MORE MASTER S DEGREE COURSES. -HOLDING A FIRST DEGREE OF 300 CREDITS OR MORE Training period Admission TRAINING ACTIVITIES RESEARCH THESIS DEFENCE - THESIS Research period DOCTORATE QUALIFICATION Access to the EHEA doctorate: To enter the Doctorate Programme in the research period, you will need an official Master s Degree or a qualification of the same level issued by a higher education institution in the European Higher Education Area. Candidates holding a degree from an educational system outside the European Higher Education Area may also be accepted onto the course, without prior accreditation of this degree, provided that said degree provides an equivalent level of training to a Spanish Master s degree and allows the holder to undertake Doctoral studies in the awarding country. In no case does such admission imply recognition of the student s previous qualification. Access is also open to: Holders of 60 or more credits included in one or more University Master s degrees. Holders of a first degree of at least 300 credits. The documents provided by these students must be translated into Spanish (if not written in one of the languages habitually used in Spain) and legally approved according to the procedure explained below.
