FOR INFORMATION ONLY Applicants for the Blue Ridge Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program must obtain an official application packet from Student Services at either Blue Ridge Campus. For more information concerning the Associate Degree Nursing application process call (828) 694-1800. PHASE ONE: Blue Ridge Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program Admission Procedures Packet for Fall 2016 Applicants Step 1: Complete an online BRCC Application for Admission at www.blueridge.edu. If you have applied to Blue Ridge Community College previously or have taken curriculum courses here before, you may fill out a Returning Student/Change of Program form and submit to the Registrar s Office. Select Pre-Associate Degree Nursing as your Program of Study. Step 2: Sign out the Associate Degree Nursing Phase One Application Packet available on or after April 6, 2015. The packet verification form must be turned in to the Registrar s Office to make your application for Fall 2016 official. Step 3: Step 4: AND Take the pre-enrollment placement test. Contact Student Services (828) 694-1800 for a testing appointment. You must have a satisfactory score on the test or complete any required prerequisite courses with a grade of P or better before being considered for admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program. The prerequisite courses for Associate Degree Nursing are DRE 097, DRE 098, DMA 010, DMA 020, DMA 030, DMA 040, DMA 050, DMA 060, DMA 070, and DMA 080. Test scores may require basic math or reading units through the College and Career Readiness Center. Placement testing is waived for applicants with a Bachelor degree or transferable English and Math with a C grade or above or for applicants with acceptable SAT or ACT scores taken within the last three years. Acceptable scores are a SAT score of 500 or above on English, Critical Reading, and Mathematics, or an ACT score of 18 or above on English and 22 or above on Reading, and 22 or above on Mathematics. Request that your high school transcript be sent to the BRCC Registrar. If you entered ninth grade or above these records are required. The high school will mail your official transcript to Blue Ridge Community College. BRCC will review your high school transcript for units in Chemistry and Biology. You must have a C average or better in these courses before being considered for admission to the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Students who have not met these requirements may do so by taking Foundations of Biology (BIO 090) for the Biology requirement, and/or Fundamentals of Chemistry (CHM 092) for the Chemistry requirement. These courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. Applicants who are currently enrolled in high school, taking these courses and anticipating completing the grade and course requirements, may continue with the application process. Students enrolled in high school must request that the high school mail a final transcript to BRCC as soon as possible upon graduation. If you have a High School Equivalency Diploma or GED, please provide these scores to the Registrar. For High School Equivalency Diploma: A standard score of 150 or above on the Science Test will count as one unit of Biology. For GED: A standard score of 450 or above on the Natural Science Test will count as one unit of Biology. There is no equivalent for the Chemistry on the High School Equivalency Diploma or GED exam. 1

AND If you have attended any college, university, or community/technical college, request that ALL official transcript(s) be sent to our Registrar. ALL official transcripts must be received before you can be considered for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing program. Student copies of transcripts are not acceptable. Step 5: Attend one of the Associate Degree Nursing Program Information Sessions to receive important information about the curriculum and career of Associate Degree Nursing education. Building, Rm. 205 Dates: Dates: Tuesday, May 19, 2015 Monday, July 13, 2015 Monday, June 15, 2015 Tuesday, September 15, 2015 Tuesday, August 18, 2015 Tuesday, November 17, 2015 Tuesday, October 20, 2015 Monday, January 11, 2016 (Inclement weather day Tuesday, January 19, 2016) All sessions are held from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. To reserve materials, send an email to ritac@blueridge.edu with your date of choice in the subject line. Applicants must attend one session in order to meet Phase One requirements. Applicants are responsible for completing the attendance form for the session and Admission Procedure Checklist and turning these in to the nursing faculty at the conclusion of the meeting. Checklists will be sent back to applicants from the Registrar s Office marked Complete or Incomplete. If applicants receive the Incomplete notice, a new checklist must be submitted once requirements are met. Step 6: BRCC Pre-Nursing Applicants will be allowed to schedule a TEAS Version V (5) test after they have attended an Associate Degree Nursing Program Information Session. Students may only sit for the TEAS two times per application cycle (June 2015 January 2016). Students who have taken the TEAS more than once will be able to use the highest score of the previous two tests. A minimum composite score of 70 on the TEAS is required to proceed to Phase Two. If the TEAS Version V is taken at other testing locations, it is the applicant s responsibility to ensure that the results are submitted to the registrar s office. Scores expire after three years. For test practice materials go to www.atitesting.com. TEAS practice materials are also available for purchase in the BRCC Bookstore or on reserve in the BRCC Library and Student Success Center. Step 7: Applicants who complete Phase I by February 1, 2016 will receive a letter acknowledging their completion of Phase I and will be eligible to pick up Phase II packets March 7 9, 2016 at Student Services in the Sink Building on the Henderson County Campus. Applicants must provide a photo ID to receive the Phase II packet and also sign that they received the packet and instructions. Phase II must be returned by March 23, 2016 following the procedures listed in the packet. The top points determine the forty-four (44) positions and fifteen (15) alternates for the program beginning August 2016. 2

Blue Ridge Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program Fall 2016 Admission Information Phase II Students who wish to apply to the Associate Degree Nursing Program must have completed a certified nursing assistant course with a state approved curriculum such as high school Allied Health Science Program or a community college course. This course must include theory, lab, and a clinical component. Certification must be attained and the applicant must be listed on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry prior to March 23, 2016. The applicant must also have a current American Heart Association - Healthcare Provider Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. (AHA HCP CPR) DOCUMENTATION: NA training A copy of a college transcript or a notarized course completion certificate will be acceptable. (Must be unrestricted) AHA HCP- CPR Photocopy of your valid card (front and back) TEAS V Photocopy of your TEAS V transcript The Associate Degree Nursing program is a limited enrollment program with forty-four (44) students and fifteen (15) alternates selected based on a point system. Since the numbers of qualified candidates for the program has greatly increased over the last few years and spaces are limited, the point system was implemented as an objective means for evaluating nursing applicants. Ranking/Selection Criteria Ranking review is required in order to be considered for admission. Only courses completed by the deadline date of March 23, 2016 will be used for ranking. Biology courses over 5 years old will not be considered for transfer credit or points in the ranking. Courses with a grade of C will meet graduation requirements but have no point value in the ranking review. Ranking points awarded for specific courses are listed below. For courses taken at other colleges or universities, points will only be awarded for those courses which you have been awarded transfer credit. There are two categories of courses curriculum related courses and the science core. The science core is assigned a higher point value than the curriculum related courses. Biology Subtotal High School students who meet all admission requirements but are still enrolled in high school level Chemistry, Biology, and/or the Health Sciences Program could receive a provisional acceptance contingent on passing Biology and Chemistry with at least a C grade and being listed on the N.C. Nurse Aide I Registry by mid-summer. Guidelines: Points will be given for first attempt only and for courses in which the applicants score an A or B. Applicants with transfer credits must have written documentation of transfer credits from other colleges/universities prior to the date for Phase II point calculations (March 23, 2016). It is the applicant s responsibility to provide the official transcripts to the Registrar s Office. Please note: an official transfer evaluation requires a minimum of three weeks from receipt of official transcript. For applicants enrolled at NC Community Colleges other than BRCC, the following courses will be substituted: BIO 168/169 for BIO 165/166. The BIO sequence (BIO 165/166 or BIO 168/169) must be completed at the same college or university in order to receive credit. All Biology courses (BIO 168/169 or BIO 165/166, and BIO 175 Microbiology must have been taken within the last five years prior to the start of the NUR curriculum. Applicants will not receive additional points for taking developmental courses or courses that are not part of their curriculum. Total Points for Ranking Adding together the grade points and additional documented experience will determine your score. Students with the highest total points will be accepted until the forty-four (44) available spaces in the program are filled. Then the next fifteen (15) will be designated as alternates. In the case of applicants with the same number of points, the applicant who submitted his/her BRCC Allied Health Program application first will be ranked higher. Notification Procedure Notification letters will be mailed on April 20, 2016. If you did not meet requirements, were not accepted, or declined your admission, you must submit a new application which will be available April 2016, attend another information session and complete the Phase II admission packet if you wish to be considered for the 2017 class. The forty-four selected students will be notified when to complete the following information: 1. Student Medical Form must be submitted at least 30 days prior to entering the Fall Semester 2016 nursing core classes. The medical form must verify acceptable levels of immunizations, physical health, and mental health. Failure to complete every aspect of the form may delay entry into the program. 2. Documented grade point average of 2.0 or better on all attempted college work by the end of Summer Semester 2016 in order to be admitted into the nursing core classes. 3. Clinical agency requirements include criminal background check and drug screening. This is a requirement of the agencies and not the nursing program. Information regarding the agency requirements will be provided at the time of registration for Fall classes. Clinical agencies reserve the right to deny a student access to the facility based on the failure to meet above requirements. * If a student is denied access to any clinical agency, the student will not be allowed to continue in the nursing program. BRCC reserves the right to change curriculum and admission requirements without prior notice. 6
