Purpose To present a proposed health and wellness plan that complements the District s Vision 2016 academic strategic plan, because a healthier child is a better learner.

20+ years of wellness partnership 1992: Charleston County Medical Society (CCMS) and MUSC began supporting CCSD school health needs. 2005: CCMS and MUSC school partnership focus shifted to nutrition and fitness, in response to the 2005 SC Student Health and Fitness Act. 2010: Superintendent launches a district wellness initiative 2012: More than 50 community partners are supporting the Superintendent s Wellness Initiative throughout the CCSD.

THE NEED: SC is the 8 TH FATTEST STATE >30% of children and adolescents and >60% of adults in SC are overweight/obese Childhood obesity is one of 4 state priority initiatives for the Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children

We are currently educating the first generation of students who may NOT outlive their parents!

Why Schools? > 95% young people in schools Large portion of daily food and exercise occurs at school Ideal setting to teach about healthy lifestyle Can enhance academic performance and behavioral improvements (www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/keystrategies/why-schools)

Docs-Adopt: Matching a physician to each school wellness committee Physicians serve as the health resource for schools 79 doctors adopted 69/80 schools (86%) 60/80 school wellness councils were active (75%) Physician adoption only factor associated with effective school wellness committees

VISION 2016 WELLNESS MISSION CCSD is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children s health, well-being and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. Our mission is to promote wellness in all schools and for all students and employees in the district.

Vision 2016 Wellness Goals Provide healthy nutrition and adequate physical activity for all students Promote wellness policies and environmental changes at the district level and at all schools Monitor and evaluate wellness progress of individual students and schools

Objective 1: Increase # of schools with active wellness programs (including wellness committee, Docs-Adopt, and healthy policy/environmental changes) from 65% to 100%

Objective 2: Increase # of exemplary district wellness policies* from 44% to 80% * Office of Health and Nutrition, SC Department of Education 2012 Guidelines

Objective 3: Increase # of students evaluated for individual fitness (FitnessGram) among 5th, 8th and high school (once during high school) students from 46% to 100%
