3 The Power of Two Policies We depend on others. They depend on us. That s why the loss of a primary wage-earner, second income provider, stay-at-home parent or caregiver can impair a family s financial future. In many cases, this protection need reduces over time. For example, the need is greatest as children grow and are educated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates it costs an average of $300,000 to raise a child to age 17, not including college tuition. 2 After the children are grown, a smaller amount of protection may still be needed to pay a mortgage or protect a spouse for example. That s why a family might require two levels of protection, and the power of two Colony Term policies can be a powerful solution. Here s How It Works A family needs protection for the next 20 years. In 10 years, the last child will finish college. Then, 10 years later, the parents expect to retire and pay off their mortgage. The challenge is to affordably provide a larger death benefit for the first 10 years, and reduce their protection for the next 10 years. Laddering two Colony Term policies is one answer. With Colony Term, you can ladder a $200,000, 20-year level premium period policy with a $500,000, 10-year level premium period policy. This arrangement answers their needs with $700,000 of term life insurance protection for the first 10 years, and $200,000 of protection for the next 10 years. The cost? For a 45-year-old male, the annual premium for the first 10 years, when both polices are in force is $770. Then, the annual premium decreases to $330 when only one policy is in force. 3 Laddering Coverage with Two Policies Over 20 Years Example: 45-Year old Male Potential Expenses First 10 Years Remaining mortgage $140,000 $0 College fund $40,000 N/A Final expenses (burial, credit card debt, etc.) Partial income replacement Second 10 Years $20,000 $30,000 $500,000 $170,000 Total Potential Need $700,000 $200,000 Annual Premium $770 $330 10 Year Premium Total $7,700 $3,300 Total Premium Paid $11,000 over 20 years 2 United States Department of Agriculture, Expenditures on Children by Families, 2011 3 All annual premiums shown are based on individuals who qualify for the Preferred No Nicotine Use premium class. After the level premium period, premiums are not guaranteed and increase annually. Includes $50 annual policy fee. Rates for other underwriting classifications are higher. No Nicotine Use excludes use of nicotine and nicotine substitutes. For non-annual payments spread throughout the year, we adjust the premium by a modal factor consistent with an annual percentage rate of 8.2% (semi-annual), 10.8% (quarterly) or 10.8% (monthly pre-arranged withdrawals only). The yearly premium cost will be higher if your client pays semi-annually, quarterly or monthly. In certain cases, your client may be able to obtain more coverage for the same or lower premium. Please confirm that your client is obtaining the most coverage for the premium paid.
