3. Programme Description 3.1 Overview In studying BA (Hons) International Business at Lincoln Business School, students explore a range of business disciplines that will enable them to understand and identify the needs of business operating in a global context. The programme is made up of four main streams of academic thought: Economics, Finance, and Marketing. Level 1 provides a foundation for these streams of academic thought. Moving on from this, in the final year students specialise in a range of international business subjects that have a strong focus on international trade and related issues. Students also have the opportunity to study a modern foreign language if they choose at all levels. The programme is designed to prepare students for a career in international business and to increase their geographical mobility. There is opportunity to study or work abroad as part of this programme, in locations such as North America, China, France, Spain, Germany, Finland and Sweden. Study placements take place in the second half of Level 2. Students wishing to undertake a work placement will do this in the year between Level 2 and Level 3. The placement experience offers a unique opportunity for students to gain an international perspective of practical business and study that complements their course at Lincoln Business School. The programme team recognises the importance of enhancing employment opportunities for our students and continues to develop employability enhancing resources and programmes. The Faculty also has an Employment Engagement Manager and a Placement Coordinator. There are many opportunities for students to participate in a range of employment enhancing initiatives. The Lincoln Award, for example, arranges mock interviews for students, as well as making use of guest speakers. There are also centrally organised workshops via Enterprise @Lincoln and a Faculty Business mentoring programme. In addition the PDP programme with small groups of students and the Personal Tutor / Academic Year Tutor system all seek to promote graduate employability. The programme incorporates contemporary approaches to pedagogic practice by incorporating the Student as Producer philosophy into its teaching and learning. Students will acquire personal, transferrable skills in an environment which supports independent learning and encourages personal development, which is extremely attractive to future employers. For example, in the module Critical HRM: Managing Diversity, the students work as researchers, producing and sharing knowledge on a research topic such as ethnicity or gender. Students work within a research environment of peer support and look for ways to creatively exhibit their research work. In the module Organisational Behaviour 1: Perspectives of (OB1), students are required to form a group and are set a problem-solving activity on the student experience and integration and are required to organise an activity of their own choosing. The International Business programme also requires students to undertake Personal Development Planning (PDP). Students engage in individual research for all aspects of the formative assessment for PDP, initially by researching for an essay that is relevant to their degree discipline and determining the skills and abilities that are required for their future career, then later in the semester by reflecting on their own skills and personal development for an individual presentation. Another example of Student as Producer is found in Organisational Behaviour 2: in Context (OB2) where students are required to prepare a Learning Resource: the brief is that it is "by students, for students" and must be something that would help other students or potential students. The Learning Resource may take any format, but must be tangible, substantial, sufficient and adequate and may be a handbook, a CD-rom, a video/dvd, a website, a game, or any other suitable means of presenting information for students/potential students. This assessment has provided a Page 5/44

number of excellent materials, some of which will be able to be used at Open Days. International students will benefit from the support and services offered by the International Office in terms of meeting students on arrival, themed events and so on. The Welcome Week will focus in particular on the needs of international students and ongoing support will be provided via student representatives, the Student Union and personal tutors, as well as support via participation in the Peer Programme for Global Graduates launched in 2011-2012, where UK students and international students work together, to support one another in the pursuit of global graduate identity. Modes of teaching, learning and assessment will vary within modules and across programmes. All Level 1 students will engage in the Personal Development Planning (PDP) process and will be supported by their respective personal tutor / academic year tutor for academic guidance and advice. International students will also be supported via the English Language Centre at the University. The Centre specialises in offering support to students in terms of their learning experiences and assessments. Additional support for assessment will be made available via workshops organised by the Academic Librarians Academic staff in the Business School have proven experience of dealing successfully with the challenges of international students studying abroad. BA (Hons) International Business responds to the United Kingdom QAA benchmark statements for the Undergraduate Awards in Business and. The benchmarking analysis provides a detailed specification of the relationship between this programme s curriculum and the relevant QAA benchmarks. Programme Structure The total number of credit points required for achievement of this award are 360 credit points. The total number of credit points required for achievement of each level and exit award within this programme are 120 credit points. There are two pathways to the programme, a 3 year pathway and a 4 year pathway. In the 3 year pathway, the students study abroad in the second half of Level 2. The Study Period Abroad is available as a compulsory element. However, students can apply for exemption from the compulsory study period abroad. Students will normally apply for exemption to the Faculty Placements Board in the year preceding their second year. Students will be granted exemptions if they can demonstrate that they have achieved the same learning outcomes (at Level 2) outlined in the module specification for the Study Period Abroad, or can achieve them through the satisfactory completion of 60 Credits of Level 2 study at Lincoln University. These students who stayed in Lincoln in Level 2 (terms 2 and 3), would take the same modules as those students on the 4 year pathway of the programme. In the 4 ywar pathway, the students have a one year international work/study placement between Levels 2 and 3. On the 3 year pathway of the programme the students will study the following modules at Level 2: Contemporary International Issues for Business (15 credits) C Critical HRM: Managing Diversity (15 credits) C Study Period Abroad (60 credits) C Page 6/44

5. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategies 5.1. Learning and Teaching Strategy Student as Producer will be introduced across the university over the next three to five years. Student as Producer is now the organising principle for teaching and learning and informs the content of the BA International Business programme. The Student as Producer will be supported with funding from the Higher Education Academy from 2010 to 2013. Student as Producer Principles (for Teaching, Learning and Assessment): Discovery: Student as Producer Technology in Teaching: Digital Scholarship Space and Spatiality: Learning Landscapes in Higher Education Assessment: Active Learners in Communities of Practice Research and Evaluation: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Student Voice: Diversity, Difference and Dissensus Support for research based learning through expert engagement with information resources Creating the Future: Employability, Enterprise, Beyond Employability, Postgraduate Students are expected to gain and develop a wide knowledge and understanding of the key areas of Business and, the relationships between these and their application. Hence early modules will commence with presenting the basic tools within the wider business environment. Later modules will build upon the general tools acquired and will allow for module choice and a degree of specialism within the curriculum. These later modules will enable the demonstration of a command of subject-specific and intellectual skills including the application of knowledge and the adoption of a more critical and analytical approach. The modules will utilise methods of teaching and learning which are appropriate to undergraduate level study, as set out in the QAA Benchmark statement for Undergraduate Programmes in Business and. Where possible modules will be presented in a discovery mode. This may take a variety of formats, and use a range of established methods of achieving this, such as a focus on problem-based or enquiry-based learning. The programme is committed to developing learners as autonomous and independent co-constructors of knowledge, who are able to undertake research. A student can expect to network and work collaboratively with other students, with some modules introducing aspects of peer review. Students on this programme will experience a rich research learning experience.which required them to appropriate information resources, making use of the full range of relevant material to support their learning. Information relating to each module, including the module synopsis, learning outcomes, week by week teaching programme, reading lists and assessment will be provided in the form of a module handbook. Sessions in learning support areas such as Library, Blackboard, using the internet and information technology will be incorporated in the programme and will be supported by the Academic Librarian. Page 11/44

These will enable students to gain practical experience in their application. 5.2. Assessment Strategy Throughout the programme assessment will take place independently for each module. A variety of assessment modes will be used to promote the development of the student s learning experience including individual assignments such as essays, projects and case studies, group presentations, in-class tests and formal examinations. Such a variety of assessments is intended to develop and prepare the students skills for the workplace environment via the integration of theory and practice.
