Ready for any challenge ETERNUS DX The Flexible Data Safe

Are you ready for all the challenges of data management? More data per storage system To minimize the costs and complexity of IT operations, many IT decisionmakers have been focusing on storage system consolidation. But as more data is consolidated in one system, high performance and quality are an absolute must. Generally speaking, when two-thirds of the available storage capacity has been utilized, system performance tends to decline, and there are often issues related to limited bandwidth. In addition, there is a higher risk of data loss or data corruption stemming from read and write errors. It is essential that a storage system always ensures data integrity and data availability, even during unexpected system failures. The following points are important when choosing a storage solution: Performance for Big Data In today s business and research environments, the data sets generated are extremely large and complex. This trend toward Big Data calls for more and more High-Performance Computing (HPC). Quite often, however, some decision-makers fail to realize that the storage system must also pace and deliver top performance as well. Processor speed, memory and the performance of internal and external connections are extremely important. Storage operations under maximum loads The performance of a storage system is determined by how fast data can be written to the storage device and read by the application and this is where the integrated software functionality is significant because it must support consistent response times, even under the heaviest workloads. Flexible storage capacity Options for achieving efficient utilization of existing storage capacity, in conjunction with system scalability, are essential when it comes to storage flexibility. This is a prerequisite for flexible capacity management and to make sure that reserve storage capacity is not allocated to databases and applications that do not really need it. The growth pattern within a system and between different system models indicates that early investments in overcapacities, and the high costs of required upgrades or model replacements, can be avoided. Efficient storage management Modern storage systems offer a wide range of innovative functions that enable enterprises to cut costs, even when faced with higher and constantly increasing demands. For example, thin provisioning is one way to avoid up-front investments, and costs can be optimized through automatic storage tiering based on agreed service levels the use of energy-saving system functions will also save money by reducing energy consumption. Server virtualization heavily impacts storage Virtual servers are nothing more than files on a storage system, and in essence these server images are stored as data. This means that storage is crucial for efficient and reliable operation of virtual servers. Considerations for storage managers Performance matters There should be enough headroom to cope with rising server virtualization penetration. It can be said that storage systems delivering higher performance also achieve a higher level of packing density and are thus more cost-efficient. High availability is even more crucial, but new options are possible The availability of a storage system has a direct impact on the availability of the server environment. But as virtual server images are just data, storage system functionalities like snapshots and replication can contribute to implementing new high-availability and disaster recovery concepts that are less complex and more efficient. Integrated server and storage management Server virtualization blurs the borderlines between server and storage management. Tighter integration is key, meaning that storage management needs to be integrated in server virtualization management. And physical servers and storage devices also require uniform management. Disaster recovery concepts have become a must Recently there has been a wave of natural and man-made disasters, which have increased the awareness of how important disaster recovery concepts are. Considerations for storage managers Care for data copies at more than one site Efficient mechanisms for replicating data at remote locations are required. Check flexibility It is important to know how flexible the storage architecture is in terms of interoperability between different models of a product family. This also applies to data copy mechanisms and the level of automation. Flexible interoperability keeps data available and IT running by having data copies at more than one site. Focus on affordable and more efficient technologies In many cases concepts based on IP/Ethernet are low-cost alternatives to traditional solutions. 2

One system, but different applications with different requirements The more consolidated a storage environment is, the more varied the requirements a storage system must fulfill. Considerations for storage managers Balance speed, capacity and costs Mission-critical databases and transactional applications often require very high response times, whereas for other applications speed is not so important, but sheer capacity is. Typically speed is related to high-performance disks (e.g. SSDs on the high-end), but this also entails significantly higher costs, whereas disks with lower speeds and large capacities are available at much lower prices. Therefore, a system should provide the flexibility to mix different disk types. Automate service levels In dynamic environments with fast changing requirements, balancing speed, capacity and costs can also be automated to always provide the optimum service level. Service quality In consolidated environments it is difficult to consistently provide optimal performance for specific applications, user groups or data streams. However, if the storage system supports different prioritizations, IT departments can offer their customers individual service levels. Cloud-like infrastructures The short time needed for provisioning IT infrastructure resources servers, storage and network connections have made the concept of cloud computing very attractive. Traditional provisioning is a long and complex process, whereas provisioning from the cloud delivers specific configurations more or less instantly via the Internet. Larger organizations are also currently building their own internal cloud infrastructures for their own core data and applications this is known as a Private Cloud. Considerations for storage managers Scalable architectures with predictable performance Cloud users expect instant provisioning of storage systems as well as reliable service. This translates into scalable storage architectures in terms of capacity and high performance with predictable response times. Advanced automation functionalities can ensure that SLAs are fulfilled in line with the agreed cost limits. Mechanisms for optimizing the utilization of disk capacity deserve attention to keep costs under control. More than storage Storage as a service is one of many offerings available from the cloud. However, there is also high demand for the delivery of complete configurations consisting of computing and storage capacities along with LAN and SAN connectivity from the cloud. This is possible, but it requires having a comprehensive infrastructure management system to be effective. In essence, all storage system requirements are centered on two things flexibility and data safety. Flexibility Scalable capacity within a system. Easy upgrade and migration to bigger systems. Uniform system management. Mechanisms to increase utilization of disk capacity. Performance architecture with predictable response times enabling growth. Flexible configuration of disk types. Automated balancing of speed, capacity and costs for optimized service levels. Integration in server virtualization management. Integration in (cloud) infrastructure management. Data safety Comprehensive functionality to prevent data loss or to repair data corruption. Flexible support of disaster recovery concepts. Efficient data encryption. Robust system design. Strong quality assurance processes from the system vendor. Flexibility and data safety are the key principles that guided the design of the Fujitsu storage portfolio. Find out how the ETERNUS DX online disk storage family from Fujitsu fully embraces these principles. ETERNUS DX The Flexible Data Safe. 3

ETERNUS DX The Flexible Data Safe The highest degree of flexibility ETERNUS DX is the strategic block-level storage system family in Fujitsu s Dynamic Infrastructures portfolio. This fully harmonized portfolio includes IT products, infrastructure solutions, cloud services and managed services that complement each other to give customers precisely the flexibility they need for their particular IT environments. The ETERNUS DX design is consistent across all models, from entrylevel to midrange and high-end systems. For example, central elements in the family concept include compatible product components and functions in all models, system interoperability, and the same system management software for deployment in all ETERNUS DX models. Thanks to their excellent scalability, the systems can be enhanced easily, allowing users to upgrade from one model level to the next. Data replication and data copies are also possible among the various system models these are all advantages that support flexible data management (central and decentral), data protection and data recovery concepts. ETERNUS DX is also an ideal choice for those who want to reduce the complexity of their storage environments while optimizing operations and maintenance processes at the same time. The consistent concept behind this product family is much different from various other market offerings that simply bundle diverse technologies in one portfolio. And that is the reason why more and more enterprises are choosing the efficient and reliable ETERNUS DX storage systems. Maximum data safety ETERNUS DX uniquely combines the greatest possible flexibility with maximum data safety. The product family supports uninterrupted operations at all levels from the physical systems to the realization of flexible disaster recovery concepts. Thanks to a wide range of guard and protection functions, the system family is like a bank safe for the reliable and uninterrupted management of enterprise data. Even the entry-level ETERNUS DX models offer the design and functionality normally expected of much larger systems. All key system components are redundant so that they can be replaced during running operations upgrades can also be carried out without interrupting any processes. The product family is developed according to the leading Japanese quality criteria adopted around the world. Having its origin in the mainframe segment, engineering is carried out in line with the same development and quality assurance processes that apply to mainframes. What s more, very few manufacturers of storage systems can match the engineering expertise of Fujitsu. For more than 40 years, the company has been developing disk storage systems for business-critical environments, while following a long-term product strategy with ETERNUS. Hardware and software are developed by an expert team of more than 1,000 storage specialists. That protects the customer against any unwanted surprises and unplanned investments that could occur during a sudden change in strategy or architecture. The long-term product strategy means that ETERNUS DX is a system that is always up to date, offering customers innovative and cost-effective options for their storage infrastructure in order to keep pace with changing business requirements. ETERNUS DX has been made available globally and is serving local, regional and international companies and organizations as core systems. ETERNUS DX The Flexible Data Safe 4

Flexibility means stability during change Seamless product family ETERNUS DX is a genuine family, not a patchwork family. Fujitsu has developed ETERNUS DX exclusively with its own experts, consciously caring for maximum interoperability and seamless integration of innovative functionalities. Flexible architecture The system architecture of the ETERNUS DX product family offers many different options for configuration and reconfiguration. For example, in all systems different types of hard disks can be mixed (SAS, Nearline SAS, SSD). Various kinds of connectivity (FC, iscsi, SAS, FCOE) are also supported and can be changed on-site. And when upgrading to a larger system model, all that is required is an update of the system controller. Hard disks and data, or even complete disk shelves, can be retained if so desired. Performance by design As more and more data from demanding applications are consolidated on one system, it is important to have enough performance reserves even under peak loads. The ETERNUS DX product family is ready for such challenges thanks to its performance-optimized architecture and almost real-time operating system. That makes the ETERNUS DX the system of choice for application scenarios that have very high I/O requirements. It features large caches, algorithms tuned for high performance and the fastest host connections. The systems even support huge databases and OLTP applications with high performance requirements. Customers have come to appreciate these strengths in daily data center scenarios ETERNUS DX makes a great impression with its fast and stable response times, enabling it to convincingly outperform comparable systems. This is proven by the numerous performance records and benchmarks set by the ETERNUS DX. Compatible product components ETERNUS DX Controller SAS Nearline SAS SSD Lechwerke AG is a regional utility company that demands the highest levels of performance and security» We are more than surprised by the high performance of Fujitsu s ETERNUS DX440 S2. Even the start-up process was completely straightforward and ran without interruptions that s something I have never experienced. «Werner Gruber, Systems Management, LEW Service & Consulting GmbH 6

Easy, consistent and powerful: ETERNUS SF Storage Management Storage operations generate a huge workload in data center administration. This is where ETERNUS SF helps with its standardized storage management for the entire ETERNUS DX system family. If you know how to operate one storage device of the family, you are able to run any of them! This is possible with ETERNUS SF, a cross-model, consistent and intuitive storage management program. Useful wizards, system data visualization and automated routine administration tasks help reduce the monitoring and management workload. It is based on a three-step operations concept: Select the type of action you want to perform from a well-structured menu, check the status and execute the task. Innovative advanced functions help to increase operational efficiency. With thin provisioning for example, the administrator can assign virtual capacity to applications so that the real, existing capacity can be pooled. There is no need to invest up front in disk capacity, which is just reserved for future demands in specific cases, without productive short-term usage. And Eco-Mode is an innovative feature that stops the rotation of the hard disk when it is not needed, and contributes to more energy efficiency. Integration of server and storage management Server virtualization blurs the borderlines between server and storage management. Tighter integration is key, meaning that storage management needs to be integrated in the server virtualization management. ETERNUS SF management software offers tight integration with server virtualization offerings such as VMware. It enables storage systems and servers to work together with on-site failovers during disasters, and it enables servers to offload tasks to the storage system, for example provisioning, cloning or the replication of virtual machines. As a provider of Dynamic Infrastructures, Fujitsu goes several steps beyond storage and virtual server management. Server virtualization is one key element for the flexible provisioning of infrastructures. However, it does not cover the physical server, storage and network world. ServerView Resource Orchestrator is a powerful tool for administrators that supports complete infrastructure configuration in an instant. Data Safety that ensures business continuity Made for safe data management Even the entry-level ETERNUS DX models offer the design and functionality normally expected of much larger systems. All key system components are redundant so that they can be replaced during running operations upgrades can also be carried out without interrupting any processes. Overview of features that support secure data management with ETERNUS DX: Cache Protector safeguards the data in the RAID controller cache to prevent data loss during a sudden power outage. The data is written to a non-volatile flash memory and safely stored there, no matter how long the power outage lasts. The Cache Protector also accelerates the reboot to bring the system up to full power quickly. Redundant Copy solves the problem of dangerously slower recovery times within a RAID group, which occurs when the capacity on the hard disk drive increases. Hard disk drives are automatically restored using parity information from the RAID group at the first sign of an error or failure. Redundant Copy drastically reduces the risk of data loss. Data encryption with the ETERNUS DX protects confidential data from unauthorized access effectively and affordably. The data encryption method is controller-based and/or disk-based (SED). SEDs are so-called Self-encrypting Drives that automatically encrypt data before it is written to the hard disk. These hard disks are ideal for ensuring compliance with stringent business and legal regulations governing data protection and data encryption. What s more, SEDs reduce the costs and work involved in disposing of the disks when they reach end of life. ETERNUS DX supports 128-bit AES encryption. As an alternative, Fujitsu also offers its own encryption technology, which requires fewer system resources and has a minimum impact on system performance. Data Block Guard: As the volume of stored data increases, data corruption caused by write or read errors becomes more probable. ETERNUS DX prevents this with Data Block Guard on its internal controller. Data Block Guard assigns a check code to the data before the data is written to the cache or the hard disks. Using this check code, the system can determine if the data has been changed in any way. As soon as the data has been read and verified, ETERNUS DX removes the check code. RAID Migration simplifies the management of storage classes during the dynamic transmission of data from LUN to LUN when the systems are running online. Swapping data to faster or lowcost drives to balance fluctuating loads is easy and secure with RAID migration. The ETERNUS SF AdvancedCopy Manager controls the various fast volume copy functions such as Remote Copy and Local Copy. Remote Equivalent Copy is a function based on remote mirroring and provides disaster protection by quickly restoring the data volumes of the productive site. In addition, synchronous and asynchronous copies can be made between primary and secondary storage systems over long distances. Flexibility and security simplify backups and disaster recovery: The consistent flexibility and security in the design of all the systems in the ETERNUS DX product family provides enterprises with very cost-effective ways of implementing data backup and disaster recovery concepts. For example, since data can be copied between the various systems in this product family, it is possible to backup data from several small systems on one large system. With ETERNUS DX data copies can also be written to various system models that are located at different geographical locations. This means that system resources can be used globally for backups and disaster recovery.
