EFB Speaking Test Level 2 The Speaking Test is a test of English with a commercial and/or business focus. The topics are the same for all Levels of English for Business. The depth at which the Topics will be treated depends on the language level of the candidates. The language expectations and target population of each Level for the Speaking Test are specified in the syllabus and aligned to the appropriate CEF level. There are 8 Topics from which 5 specific questions will be prepared by LCCI as the context for the Test: 1. Earning a Living - wages, living standards - job types and roles - candidate s (intended) job - employee/employer relationships - organizational type/structure 2. Production, - distribution: origin and destination of products Sale of Goods - retail and wholesale/small shops/supermarkets and Services - new markets and products - consumer protection - customer service/quality 3. Trade - imports/exports - international markets - trade blocs e.g. EU 4. Money - methods of paying, purchasing - price changes - banking services - savings - pensions 5. Transport - problems, disadvantages - individual, commercial, industrial - local, national, international - improvements? - congestion - pollution 6. Communications - effects on business - effects on individuals - media: TV, radio, newspapers, Internet - IT, computers, PCs - telephone, email, fax, surface mail - advertising 7. Education - personal - education system - training - skills 8. Travel and Tourism - travel and the individual - tourism and local area - tourism in the nation s economy

LEVEL 2 TOPIC A SAMPLE Instruction to the candidate You have 5 minutes to prepare for your examination. The subject matter is given in the topic below. You have to discuss this topic with the examiner and you will be expected to do most of the talking. To help you in putting your ideas together, the topic is followed by some questions and suggestions for the basis of your conversation. However, you may introduce other ideas providing they are on the topic. You may keep this paper to help you during the examination. Give it back to the examiner at the end of the examination. Do not make any written notes during this preparation time. The Topic: SHOPPING (Syllabus Topic 2) Base your conversation on the following: Describe the shopping facilities in your country Are the shops small, large or a mixture of both? What is the difference between shops in the town and country? How does this affect the buyer? Can you see any future changes to this pattern? If so, describe them and the possible effects. For example, is the small shop being replaced by larger shops? Give examples. How do you think shopping facilities could be improved? (i) (ii) for those living in the country? for those living in the towns? Give examples of such improvements.

LEVEL 2 TOPIC B SAMPLE Instruction to the candidate You have 5 minutes to prepare for your examination. The subject matter is given in the topic below. You have to discuss this topic with the examiner and you will be expected to do most of the talking. To help you in putting your ideas together, the topic is followed by some questions and suggestions for the basis of your conversation. However, you may introduce other ideas providing they are on the topic. You may keep this paper to help you during the examination. Give it back to the examiner at the end of the examination. Do not make any written notes during this preparation time. The Topic: LOCAL TRANSPORT (Syllabus Topic 5) Base your conversation on the following: Explain how the transport systems in your country are used regularly by the ordinary person. Think of walking, cycling, bus, rail, river, sea and air. Which type of person commonly uses the various types and for which purpose? Talk about the cost of transport to ordinary people and what they can afford. Say to what extent you use local transport. Are you dependent on it? Offer any suggestions for improvement.

LEVEL 2 TOPIC C SAMPLE Instruction to the candidate You have 5 minutes to prepare for your examination. The subject matter is given in the topic below. Do not make any written notes during this preparation time. The Topic: TOURISM (Syllabus Topic 8) Base your conversation on the following: What is the value of travel to the tourist? Learning about: Getting to know people: Learning the language: The land, scenery and weather. Give examples. Visiting historical places and buildings. Can you name some famous ones? Different customs and food. Give examples. Is this important? If you were guiding a tourist in your country, what would you offer? You might consider special areas of natural beauty, historical sites and buildings or anything else which is special to you.

Level 2 Topic B - Local Transport Candidate You need to hire a mini-bus for a group of 8 businessmen visiting your company. Discuss with the representative of the Bus Company your specific needs, including dates and times of pick-ups. You should also check whether the bus has seatbelts and if the passengers are fully insured. Level 2 Topic B - Local Transport Examiner You are the representative of a company hiring out mini-buses with drivers. Obtain the necessary details and respond to questions concerning safety and insurance.

Level 2 Topic C - Tourism Candidate You are planning a visit to London in the near future. You meet with a representative of the British Tourist Authority at a Holiday Show in your home town. Tell them what sort of holiday you enjoy and enquire what they would recommend to do in England and when they would recommend you to visit. Level 2 Topic C - Tourism Examiner You are the representative of the British Tourism Authority attending a Holiday Show in the candidate s home town. Find out the type of holiday which would be appropriate and respond to questions concerning itinerary and timing.
