BUSINESS STRENGTH BANDWIDTH Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet is a uniquely flexible, high-speed, layer 2 networking solution that links customer LANs across two or more sites in point-to-point and multipoint configurations. It enables customers to design, build and manage high-speed data networks based on Ethernet technology in the backbone/core, access network or both. Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet gives customers an access service to their networks, provides backbone networks between sites, and connects customers sites. Customers gain access to scalable bandwidths and are able to run bandwidth-hungry corporate applications such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM) and host back-up, disaster recovery, multi-media and VOIP. Our Ethernet products utilise a gigabit Ethernet-switched metropolitan area network, with Points of Presence (PoPs) in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Additional PoPs will soon be rolled out in other selected capital cities and regional centres. Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet is for service providers, carriers and other customers who want to offer fully managed, point-to-point and multipoint, layer 2 Ethernet services to their customers. It can be used for: access services to service provider networks stand-alone services between service provider sites services between third party sites backbone connections back-up or Storage Area Network (SAN) networking disaster recovery FEATURES A wide range of routable network protocols are supported including TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, DECnet, AppleTalk and VINES. Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet can be used to transport non-routable protocols such as NETBIOS, NetBEUI and LAT. State-of-the-art switches deployed in buildings provide ready-to-use Telstra Wholesale Ethernet service delivery points. 1
Three types of Ethernet service configuration point-to-point, multipoint and aggregated. CUSTOMER BENEFITS PRODUCT FEATURES STREAMLINED Streamlined operational processes for ISPs, system integrators and carriers with implementation ease and minimal capital investment. EXTENSIVE COVERAGE Coverage extending to wireless mobile subscribers on all domestic networks and selected international networks. COST EFFECTIVE Direct Connect SMS is a fast, cost-effective and simple way to deliver messages to end users or staff. ADD VALUE Resources can be directed to where they add value. REVENUE OPPORTUNITIES Differentiated market offerings create new revenue opportunities. POINT-TO-POINT ETHERNET Our standard Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet service provides a point-to-point service between two sites (one Telstra VLAN, two sites). This service places both the A-end and B-end in a dedicated Ethernet segment, with the two sites transmitting unicast traffic to one another only via a native Ethernet connection. When using point-to-point networks, it is recommended that both sites operate at the same access rates. MULTIPOINT ETHERNET This allows connection of more than two sites to the same Telstra VLAN service. Three sites are connected to the same Telstra VLAN and unicast traffic can be directed from any of the three sites to any other. Using the multipoint network allows a number of sites to be connected over a single LAN segment. The multipoint network allows direct layer 2 and any-toany connectivity between the sites for greater throughput and site aggregation. Multipoint Ethernet ensures that traffic between remote sites meet desired traffic scenarios. 2

ETHERNET Q-in-Q (802.1q-in-802.1q) With either a point-to-point or multipoint network topology, a VLAN or an 802.1Q tunnel service can be activated on all ports. It offers simplicity in service activation and management procedures. It also reduces the risk of broadcast storms that may occur in a large multipoint network. When this feature has been activated, the TWE port will transport 802.1Q tagged Ethernet frames originating from a customer s sites transparently across their network. VLAN stacking will be used to tunnel the customer s assigned VLANs across the TWE network. BENEFITS Highly robust platform with extensive reach across CBD, business and metropolitan exchange zones. Highly scalable, which means customers can expand their networks without having to invest in additional network infrastructure. 4
Usually no need to invest in additional equipment to connect to Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet. We manage and maintain the network for our customers, leaving them free to focus on their customers. Allows our customers to offer their customers a secure solution with our VLAN management, freeing them to focus on their core business processes. COVERAGE Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet is currently a metro-based service. Regional coverage is available in some areas. Zone tables supply further information. PREREQUISITES There are no product prerequisites. A Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet customer is required to sign either a Customer Relationship Agreement (CRA) or an Electronic Customer Relationship Agreement (ecra). Each service has a minimum term of 12 months. General information on contracts is available on our website www.telstrawholesale.com. CONFIGURATION The Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet service will supply a Cisco 3550 switch at the customer s site. The switch is connected via a 1000 Mbps backbone uplink to the TWE network. A port on this switch is allocated to the customer and activated to the requested configuration. When data is sent to this port, the data is placed into a unique Telstra Wholesale virtual local area network (VLAN), which securely passes it through the Telstra Wholesale Ethernet (TWE) network. When the data reaches the destination port, the Telstra Wholesale VLAN is removed at the TWE receiving port and the data is presented back to the customer. For detailed information on product configuration, customers should contact their account manager or solutions engineer to request a Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet technical specification. BILLING All services are billed one month in advance. All Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet charges are included on the customer s standard Telstra bill. Each service allocates a full national number (FNN) for every port and VLAN. Charges are then allocated via code to the FNN, which appears on the bill. Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet is a rebillable, resellable product. DELIVERY The lead times for wholesale business grade Ethernet activation fall into five categories, depending on existing infrastructure: No build = 4 days Category 1 metro = 8 days These orders can include minor work at the customer or exchange end that can be done at the same time as the visit to install jumpers. Minor work includes installation of network terminating equipment and the installation of new cards in existing racks. This target also includes situations where minor FFS work is to be undertaken in conjunction with the activity mentioned above. Minor FFS work is defined as less than a 30-metre cable run on the same floor of a building requiring no mechanical aids and no third party negotiations. Category 2 metro = 20 days This covers orders that require external transmission plant, substantial internal plant or substantial FFS work, but do not require an ISA (Infrastructure Shortfall Advice) to Infrastructure Services (IS). Examples are: any installation of new transmission or switching equipment; where substantial internal cabling is required; a mux or sub-rack needs to be installed; or a Cisco switch install is required. Category 3 metro = 25 days 8
These orders are identical to Category 2 but can only occur when the end of a single-end service, or both ends of a two-end service, are located within the metropolitan area. At least one end requires statutory authority and building owner/manager approval. Category 4 metro is on a case-by-case basis For the delivery of Category 4 wideband orders in metro areas, it can take up to four days for the sales and assessment stage. At the end of the fourth day, Telstra Wholesale will advise if IS FOR CUSTOMERS WHO WANT TO OFFER FULLY MANAGED, POINT-TO-POINT AND MULTIPOINT, LAYER 2 ETHERNET SERVICES TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. this particular service order falls into the definition of a Category 4 (or wideband extensive). Further work is required to determine the committed date for this service order. An additional five days is needed - ie nine working days in total - before we can give a committed date for the delivery of the service. (Metro refers to the greater metropolitan area including all CBD and business zones.) The minimum terms for Wholesale Business Grade Ethernet are: standard pricing: 12 months discounted pricing: the discounted term, ie two or three years OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE We provide a help desk service for new installations.
