What is Operational Business Intelligence? Operational Business Intelligence is different from regular strategic and tactical BI existing in most organizations. Traditional BI used to have valuable insights on past activities, which happened weeks or months ago and help users to modify the operational approach in the existing operations after evaluating. By the time you detect an operational problem with your traditional BI, you have already missed the opportunity. Strategic BI is not concerned with achievement of immediate business goals by making rapid decisions whereas Operational BI optimizes daily business operations which require fast action time. Strategic decisions are mostly made at corporate level whereas Operational decisions are made by Line managers. The table below summarizes the usability of BI across the enterprise for Strategic Management, Senior Management and Business Users. Strategic BI Tactical BI Operational BI Objective Increase market Share Increase Customer spending Campaigns Launches Product Pricing Discounts to increase sales Outstanding Credit payments BI needs Market share analysis Revenue analysis Customer analysis Retail analysis Real time sales analysis Fraud analysis Period Months Weeks Intra-day Users CEO Strategic Planner Senior Manager Line Manager Operations Manager Table 1: BI Usability across the Enterprise 3

Operational BI : Right-time BI Operational BI can automate operational data integration and management; it can also report and notify certain decisions or actions. For example, if Survey conducted has a unexpected decline of response from certain demographic groups, an alert is sent to the research manager. The research managers can react rapidly to solve business problems at the operational levels. The root cause can be analyzed immediately by drilling down to the underlying problem areas. The data can be drilled in multiple ways: - By Geographic location - By Demographic group Based on the results, management can prioritize activities such as marketing campaigns instantly rather than waiting for the opportunity to get lapsed. This need for an Operational BI has been encouraged by the need for real-time visibility of performance. Being able to quickly "slice and dice" all the data captured from Enterprise Applications leads to a much better understanding. Business Analysts look at what has happened in the past, figure out why it has happened, and make changes for future strategies. Operational BI is not only intended for business analysts, but mainly for line managers, executives, analysts, employee, partners, suppliers, and customers. Sales managers and customer support staff need information to be presented in a form that relates to the business tasks and activities they perform in their everyday jobs. They not only need information, but also workflows and guided analyses that help them interpret and analyze this information. This requires a process-centric, rather than data-centric approach to BI processing. Operational Business Intelligence guarantees significant business benefits and extends to a wide user audience. 4

Types of Operational BI Processing Operational BI processing can be broadly classified into the following: 1. Operational Data Integration application collects and integrates operational information for analysis from operational databases. The purpose is to reduce data latency. 2. Operational Reporting generates reports from operational data. The purpose is to reduce reporting latency. 3. Operational Decision Automation notify user for urgent actions to be taken by business users. The purpose is to reduce decision latency. 4. Operational Performance Management delivers the analysis and the action to be taken to business users from operational data integration. The purpose is to reduce analysis latency. Essentials for Operational Business Intelligence Organization capabilities can be fully utilized if organizations know-how of critical processes, it s operations, critical levels and thresholds can be configured through exception alerts, delivery and publishing agents and interactive dashboards. Capabilities to schedule, deliver and publish up to date analysis and report objects to users or groups of users at the right time in the way they prefer via email or file repository or portal is the key. Automation of data gathering & Integration: Operations Business Intelligence coupled with Enterprise Applications, Data storage applications, Business Process activities etc. and automation of data gathering from operational databases and its integration. Updates of analysis and report objects: Automatic updates of analysis, reports and other objects based on this updated data Delivery and Publishing of information: Automation of analysis, reports based on updated data from sources and provided to various staff members as per responsibility. Benefits by Operational Business Intelligence Make meaningful tactical decisions: Operational BI is helpful in making tactical actions like timeliness of business decisions, accuracy of business decisions, improvement of operational efficiencies, and overall helps present accurate, timely and meaningful operational view to management. Improve real time performance: Operational Business Intelligence can improve performance with real time or near real time information on key factors like customer satisfaction & retentions, product marketing, advertisements, manufacturing, inventory turns, invoice & payment, Product Pricing, agile operational decision making. ( look at capitalization for some of the key factors here). Identify and direct operational business drivers: Operation BI can identify operational business drivers and specific operational processes that needs to be addressed. It helps organizations to establish visibility to key business processes for operational users, create an on-going process for operational performance review and re-alignment, and align operational KPIs with line-of-business goals. 6

Conclusion Taking organizations to the next level of Business Intelligence and connecting it with Enterprise Applications; forms the base for Operational BI. The objective of Operational BI is to make more timely business decisions, enabling real -time or near real-time BI processing. Operational BI aims to fill the gap between operations and analytics, creating a process-action structure. The main advantage of using Operational Business Intelligence for organizations will be to have interlinked integration for faster delivery of information in form of analysis, reports and actionable alerts to people with different responsibility. 7
