SEBAMB Southeast District Bar Association Member Bulletin Bulletin MemberBullvnlsnglwnslsnlawBulletinBulletin Southeast District Bar Association and Lawyer Referral Service Issue 1 February 2012 This Month s Meeting - February 22 Join us for an evening with the Honorable James P. Gray He was once a determined drug warrior, but now former Assistant US Attorney and Superior Court Judge James P. Gray believes the time has come to take marijuana out of the black market and regulate it instead. James P. Gray has been a trial judge in Orange County, California since 1983. Before becoming a judge, he served as a Volunteer in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica, a staff judge advocate and criminal defense attorney in the Navy JAG Corps, a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, and a civil litigation attorney in a private law firm, in addition to being a Republican candidate for US Congress in 1998, and a Libertarian candidate for US Senate in 2004. Judge Gray has discussed issues of drug policy on more than two hundred television and radio shows and public forums all across the country. Using his experience on the bench and elsewhere, he has also authored a book on the failed War on Drugs, another Wearing the Robe about practical and ethical issues in being a judge, and has composed a musical that encourages young people to expand their horizons and live a fuller life. The former Orange County judge filed a new voter initiative that will regulate and tax marijuana like wine, keep it from those under 21 years of age and provide for billions of new dollars in state sales tax from the regulated sales of marijuana. A copy of Judge Gray's voter initiative and one minute video can be viewed at the Regulate Marijuana Like Wine website: regulatemarijuanalikewine.com. Page 3 SEBAMB Southeast District Bar Association Member Bulletin PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Last month we celebrated at the 49 th Annual Installation and Awards Gala. This was a great event thanks to the hard work and contributions of many including Past-President Del Hovden and Master of Ceremonies Mario Trujillo, and always supportive Southeast District bench officers such as Judge Yvonne Sanchez, Judge Peter Espinoza, and Judge John Torribio. When planning the Installation, I made a conscious decision to not have a keynote speaker. This was done to both keep the event within reasonable time parameters but more importantly, to focus the attention on the hard-working and dedicated attorneys and judicial officers of the Southeast District. It was a true pleasure to have our bar association recognize the well-deserving honorees: Attorney of the Year Lillian Vega Jacobs, Judicial Officer of the Year Commissioner Burt Barnett and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley. Each of these individuals has contributed to the professional yet congenial spirit enjoyed in our local Courts and provided excellent service to the community in the process. Our first general membership meeting of 2012 will be on February 22, 2012 at Rio Hondo Event Center. We are moving the meetings to an earlier time with the hosted social hour starting at 5:30 pm and the dinner & program starting at 6:30 pm. These meetings are a great opportunity to earn MCLE credits, network with other attorneys and simply enjoy the company of the attorneys and judicial officers of the Southeast District. Attendance at a minimum of 5 meetings is also mandatory for all LRS members. However, we all have work, families and other commitments to attend to as well. So this year it is one of my goals to be sure these meetings are completed no later than 8:00 pm (and hopefully closer to 7:30 pm). Our February Meeting Speaker is Superior Court Judge James P. Gray. Judge Gray was once a selfdescribed drug warrior, but now this former Assistant US Attorney and Superior Court Judge believes the time has come to take marijuana out of the black market and regulate it instead. Come join us to learn more on this controversial and current issue which is sure to spark some debate. Yours, Jennifer Lumsdaine
