INTRODUCTION PERSONAL UMBRELLA The purpose of the North Star Personal Umbrella program is to provide personal catastrophe liability coverage in excess of an underlying insurance program for individuals, particularly executives, property owners, and retired people of considerable net worth. UNDERWRITING REQUIREMENTS 1. All eligible primary liability coverages must be placed in the North Star. (This includes liability on boats and motors and one and two family dwellings.) This is a requirement of our reinsurers. Also, the Underlying policy must provide "personal injury" coverage. 2. The policy must be issued in the name of an individual. 3. Personal Umbrella Liability Applications, for quotation or policy issuance, must be submitted to the Home Office underwriting for acceptability. The agent may not bind the coverage until an application has been submitted and agreed to by the Company and then is accepted by the insured. 4. A computer generated Personal Umbrella Renewal Questionnaire is provided by North Star with the Expiration List two months in advance. This Renewal Questionnaire lists all present coverages. Indicate any changes, additions or deletions, sign and return to North Star, and a renewal policy will be issued. 5. Primary coverages not written by North Star must be written in insurance companies with a Best s rating of B+ or better. PROHIBITED LIST The following exposures are not eligible for reinsurance under this program: 1. Assigned risk drivers. 2. Automobile drivers with more than 2 moving violations in a 3-year period or more than 2 chargeable accidents in a 3-year period 3. Automobile drivers with any convictions for reckless driving or driving while intoxicated. 4. Youthful Drivers ages 16 to 18 with any at fault accidents or moving violations. 5. Youthful Drivers ages 19 to 21 with any at fault accidents or more than 1 moving violation in the last 3 years. 6. Youthful Drivers ages 22 to 24 with any at fault accidents or more than 2 moving violations in the last 3 years. 7. Business Pursuits except as permitted under the Homeowners rules and policy. 8. Errors and Omissions Liability. 9. Judges. 10. Labor Leaders. 11. Law Enforcement Officials. 12. Newspaper or Magazine Reporters, Editors or Publishers. 13. Persons who represent a Moral Hazard or anyone who has been sued for libel or slander. 14. Politicians. 15. Professional Liability. 16. Prominent Figures: Actors, Actresses, Professional Athletes, or others who are in the public limelight. 17. Public Lecturers. 18. Radio and TV Broadcasters and Telecasters. 19. PRIMARY (UNDERLYING) INSURANCE MINIMUM REQUIRED LIMITS - PERSONAL UMBRELLA The following are the minimum limits required for the underlying policies: 1. Automobile Liability a. If North Star writes the underlying Automobile coverage. Cars, Pickups, Motorcycles, Motor Homes and Mopeds $250,000/$500,000 Bodily Injury and $100,000 Property Damage; or $300,000/$300,000 Bodily Injury and $100,000 Property Damage If any Youthful Drivers (New Business Only) $500,000/$500,000 Bodily Injury and $100,000 Property Damage b. If North Star does not write the underlying Automobile coverage Cars, Pickups, Motorcycles, Motor Homes and Mopeds $500,000/$500,000 Bodily Injury and $100,000 Property Damage; or $500,000 Combined Single Limit 2. Personal Liability, either as a separate policy or as a part of another policy. 3. Watercraft 4. Recreational Vehicles (Automated mode of transportation not licensed for road use) 5. Business Pursuits or Incidental Office POLICY TERM: One year POLICY LIMIT AND RETAINED LIMIT Basic contract limit is $1,000,000. The highest Umbrella limit available when youthful drivers are insured is $2,000,000. Limits of $2,000,000, $3,000,000, $4,000,000 and $5,000,000 are available - refer to Company for approval and rating. Provides $1 million ($2 million, $3 million, $4 million and $5 million options available - refer to Company for approval and rating) excess insurance over Auto, Homeowners, Watercraft, and other personal liability exposures. It also provides some coverages not available under basic forms, up to the limit purchased, over a small deductible of $250. 2. Pays the cost of legal defense where coverage is not provided by basic policies. 3. Umbrella automatically provides coverage for personal injury such as mental anguish, false arrest, false imprisonment, wrongful eviction, libel, slander, defamation of character, or invasion of privacy. The Underlying policy must provide "personal injury" coverage. 4. Includes employers liability for domestic employees not subject to Workers Compensation. 5. Coverage is world wide. Many underlying policies have territorial limitations restricting coverage to the U.S.A., its territories or possessions and Canada. 6. Can be used for both individuals in town and retired farmers owning farm land. Prospects would be business executives, retired farmers, property owners, retired people of means, etc. 7. Is not a complex policy and is easy to rate. 8. Cost is moderate when you consider the high limit, the broad nature of the policy and the potential exposures of the insured. * Refer to the policy or the Company for exact wording of any of these provisions. INTRODUCTION COMMERCIAL UMBRELLA The purpose of the North Star Commercial Umbrella program is to provide catastrophe liability coverage in excess of the underlying insurance program for businesses and your commercial accounts. UNDERWRITING REQUIREMENTS 1. The primary underlying coverages such as Commercial Multiline policies, Commercial General Liability policies or Business Protector policies must be written with North Star. This is a requirement of our reinsurers. 2. AGENTS MAY NOT BIND COVERAGE BY APPLICATION. Coverage is bound only after the application is received and accepted by the Home Office. 3. POLICY TERM: One year. POLICY LIMIT AND RETAINED LIMIT Basic contract limit is $1,000,000. The highest Umbrella limit available when youthful drivers are insured is $2,000,000. Limits of $2,000,000, $3,000,000, $4,000,000 and $5,000,000 are available - refer to Company for approval and rating. The self-insured retention (insured s retained limit) is $10,000 for all Commercial Umbrella Policies. Limits of $6,000,000 to $10,000,000 may be available refer to Company for acceptability and premiums. RATING PROCEDURE: Refer to Company *HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR COMMERCIAL LIABILITY UMBRELLA POLICY 1. Provides excess insurance for: a. Bodily Injury Liability; b. Property Damage Liability; and c. Personal and Advertising Injury Liability. 2. Pays those sums in excess of the $10,000 retention where underlying insurance does not apply and if coverage is not excluded in this policy. 3. Coverage is world wide, which is broader than most underlying coverages. 4. Includes contractual and independent contractors coverage. 5. Gives broad coverage at a moderate cost for the limit purchased. 6.
