UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON GEOLOGY and ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGY

Meet the Geology Department... 10 Full-time Faculty & Staff 5 Part-time Faculty The Department of Geology at the University of Dayton seeks to prepare the citizen-scientists of tomorrow to understand and meet the evolving challenges of a complex planet. 25-40 student majors and minors Coursework and research in: structural geology paleontology remote sensing mineralogy glaciers GIS climate sustainability water 2

Academics The Geology Department offers two tracks of academic study. Each track offers students opportunties to explore the dynamic, ever-changing world around us. Our Geology and Environmental Geology majors are joined by a Geology minor, as well as the College s newest minor in Sustainability, Energy, and the Environment (SEE). SEE is an interdisciplinary minor that brings together faculty, staff, and students from across the University. In addition, our undergraduate majors now have an exciting opportunity to pursure a graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The University has amazing opportunties for all majors, including the... and River Stewards Program, which identifies select undergraduate students from all disciplines, offering resources and opportunities that focus on understanding water resources, the environment, and community. Explore... N Where will you go? In the summer of 2010, geology students Anthony Asher and Jared Stoffel joined faculty mentor Allen McGrew to scale precipitous Chimney Rock in the East Humboldt Range of Nevada to collect a sample that proved to be the oldest rock ever documented in the state of Nevada. (See full image on the cover) S During the Colorado Field Course, students work together to decipher the nearly 2.0 billion year history of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, as well as the environmental impacts of human life in such a dynamic landscape. From the historic gold deposits to Dinosaur Ridge to the glacial features of Rocky Mountain National Park, students experience firsthand a wide diversity of geologic environments. In Dec. 2013, UD geol explored the diverse a geologic environment plate boundary in New exploring active volca glacier, students expe the titanic forces tha through time. 4

Less than 30 minutes drive from the UD campus, environmental geology major Shayn Roeder collects a sediment core to investigate the soils of the Silver Lake Wetlands restoration site. UD geology major Todd Longbottom accompanied faculty advisor Umesh Haritashya on an expedition to investigate the retreating glaciers of the central Himalaya near the headwaters of the Ganges River. ogy students nd dynamic s of an active Zealand.
