CHANGES TO THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR 2014-2015 Office of Access and Enrollment 3
New for Fall 2014-2015! Students are assigned a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Last year: All eighth grade students who wanted to apply online had to first request a PIN through the online application site. New this year: PINs will be provided to all eighth grade students via the eligibility letter. The eligibility letter will also identify the programs for which you are eligible to apply, based on your seventh grade standardized test scores and/or final grades. CPS/Charter Students will receive their eligibility through their school counselor in September. Non-CPS Students must submit a Non-CPS Student Eligibility Letter Request Form (accessible at www.cpsoae.org click Apply ), along with their seventh grade scores and final grades. After the form is processed, an eligibility letter will be sent to your home. Office of Access and Enrollment 4

Online self-service scheduling Last year: All students first applied online and waited for OAE to schedule their Selective Enrollment exams, IB and Military information sessions, and Senn Performing Arts auditions. New this year: You will be able to use the online application site, www.apply.cps.edu, to schedule and reschedule your own appointments. NOTE: The scheduling process opens September 23rd. Applications are accepted starting October 1st. If you plan to apply online, you must schedule your appointments BEFORE you submit your applications. If you do not want to schedule/apply online, submit a paper application and your appointments will be scheduled by the Office of Access and Enrollment (or, in the case of Senn Fine and Performing Arts Program, by the school). You will receive letters notifying you of the dates, times, and locations of your appointments. Office of Access and Enrollment 5

Early Testing = Early Results Last year: All students, regardless of when they took the Selective Enrollment High Schools (SEHS) admissions exam, received their results in February with their notification letters. New this year: Testing will begin in October. If you take the test in October or November, you will receive their SEHS exam results within three weeks of the testing date. This will help inform your decisions regarding the schools where you want to apply. (If you take the test after the November test date, your test results will be in the notification letter you receive in February.) Office of Access and Enrollment 6

Application Process One application per student Admissions testing is required. Schedule your test before submitting application if you are applying online. Apply to up to six schools. Two ways to apply: online at www.apply.cps.edu OR submit paper application to OAE. If you submit a paper application, your test will be scheduled by OAE and you will receive a letter notifying you of the date, time, and location of your test. The Admissions Exam The Selective Enrollment High Schools admissions exam is approximately three hours long (unless you have an IEP/504 Plan that allows for additional time). The exam covers four subject areas: reading comprehension, vocabulary, language arts (grammar), and math word problems. Calculators are not allowed (unless this is specified in the accommodations on an IEP). Office of Access and Enrollment 13

Selection Process Selection is based on a 900-point scale derived from admissions test scores, ISAT scores, and final (cumulative) report card grades. Each of these three areas is worth a maximum of 300 points. Office of Access and Enrollment 15
Socio-Economic Factors The selection process for Selective Enrollment High Schools takes socio-economic characteristics into consideration. Each street address falls within one of four tiers. These tiers are used as part of the selection process. Selection Process NO sibling preference. NO consideration for proximity. First 30% of seats at each school are filled by rank score ONLY. Remaining seats are divided equally among the four tiers. The top-scoring students in each tier are selected. Office of Access and Enrollment 17
Applicant Pool Selective Enrollment High Schools do not have waiting lists. After students are selected, a pool of applicants remains, ranked by score. Students who decline offers, or who have not received an offer, remain in the applicant pool. If schools have seats remaining, it is possible for a student in the applicant pool to receive an offer in a subsequent round. (Note that most schools do not have a second round.) Principal Discretion Principal Discretion allows principals of Selective Enrollment High Schools to fill a designated number of seats, outside of the regular selection process, and in strict compliance with the Principal Discretion guidelines. The Principal Discretion process takes place in March, following the first round of regular selection. Information about the process is posted on the Office of Access and Enrollment website, www.cpsoae.org, in February. Only Selective Enrollment High Schools have Principal Discretion. A student does NOT have to decline an offer from a Selective Enrollment High School (or from ANY high school) in order to apply for Principal Discretion. Office of Access and Enrollment 19

Military Academies Offer rigorous and relevant college preparatory curriculum. Each academy focuses on a different branch of the military. There is no expectation for students to enter the military after graduation. Specific opportunities are provided for leadership, teamwork, and service. Office of Access and Enrollment 21

Schedule your appointment at an information session before submitting application if you are applying online. Selection Process Students are selected for seats in Military Academies based on a two-part questionnaire and a brief essay completed at the required Information Session -- along with their standardized test scores and final classroom grades from seventh grade. Students are given points based on their seventh grade final grades (100 points), seventh grade standardized test scores (100 points), the two-part assessment (100 points for each part), and the essay (100 points), for a maximum total of 500 points. Magnet Schools and Programs Offer specialty programs in areas including fine and performing arts, engineering, and agricultural sciences. Application Process One application per student An audition is required in order for students to be considered for the fine and performing arts program at Senn. If you plan to apply to Senn, schedule the audition before submitting application if you are applying online. Apply to up to eight schools/programs Two ways to apply: online at apply.cps.edu OR submit paper application to OAE. If you submit a paper application, you will be contacted by Senn regarding the date, time, and location for your audition. Office of Access and Enrollment 31
Additional Application Information If you are applying to Curie or Senn, select the type of fine and performing arts program in which you are interested. If you do not select a program type, you will not be included in the selection process. If you live in Curie s attendance boundary, you do not have to submit an application to apply to the fine and performing arts program. Office of Access and Enrollment 32
Additional Application Information If you are applying to Von Steuben, you can be considered for the Science Program or the Scholars Program. Additional documentation is required for the Scholars Program (visit www.vonsteuben.org for details.) If you do not qualify for the Scholars Program, or if you do not submit this documentation, you will be included in the selection process for the Science Program. There are two new magnet high schools, which opened in fall 2013: Disney II Magnet High School (Fine Arts and Technology) and RTC Medical Preparatory High School (Health Sciences) Office of Access and Enrollment 33

Eligibility Requirements - Exceptions Chicago HS for Agricultural Sciences: requires a minimum stanine of 5 in reading comprehension, 5 in total math, AND 5 in science. Von Steuben Science program: requires a minimum stanine of 5 in reading comprehension, 5 in total math, AND 5 in science. Von Steuben Scholars program: requires a minimum stanine of 7 in reading comprehension, 7 in total math, AND 7 in science. In addition, you must submit teacher recommendations and an essay to your elementary school counselor. For additional information, see Von Steuben s website, www.vonsteuben.org. Selection Process For most Magnet High Schools and Programs, students are selected through a computerized lottery. Siblings are accepted first. There are two exceptions: Senn Arts Program: Eligible students are selected through an audition and/or portfolio process. Von Steuben Scholars Program: Eligible students are selected based on test scores, GPA, teacher recommendations, and an essay. Office of Access and Enrollment 37

Waitlists After available seats are filled, nonselected students are placed on waitlists. Waitlists are managed by the school. As offers to selected students are declined, the seats are filled from the waitlists, according to category. Office of Access and Enrollment 39
INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE HIGH SCHOOLS Office of Access and Enrollment 40
International Baccalaureate High Schools Beginning in fall 2013, CPS will offer two types of IB High Schools: MYP-for-All IB High Schools this is a new type of CPS IB High School. MYP refers to the IB Middle Years Programme. Diploma Prep + Diploma Programme IB High Schools this is the current type of CPS IB High School. Office of Access and Enrollment 41
International Baccalaureate High Schools IB MYP-for-All High Schools Neighborhood students do not need to apply in order to enroll. Non-neighborhood students may apply if space is available. All students in ninth and tenth grade participate in the IB Middle Years Programme. Diploma Prep (ninth and tenth grade) + Diploma Programme (grades 11-12) is provided for students who apply in eighth grade and are offered a seat. Office of Access and Enrollment 42
International Baccalaureate High Schools Diploma Prep + Diploma Programme IB High Schools Students must apply while in eighth grade and must meet application eligibility requirements. Diploma Prep is offered to students in ninth and tenth grade and may be provided through the IB Middle Years Programme or a specific program of study designed by the school. The IB Diploma Programme is offered to students in grades 11-12 who have successfully completed Diploma Prep. Office of Access and Enrollment 43

Application Process One application per student Attendance at an Information Session is required by each IB School. Students must be eligible to attend an Information Session, based on their seventh grade test scores and grades. Each school sets it own cutoff score to determine eligibility for attendance at its Information Session. You must attend an Information Session at each school where you are applying and meet the Information Session cutoff score. Each school s Information Session cutoff scores are posted at www.cpsoae.org under Programs>International Baccalaureate>Information Session Cutoff Scores. Also at the site is a scoring rubric that can be used to calculate student scores. Office of Access and Enrollment 46

Selection Process Each school identifies a minimum cutoff score for selections and applicants meeting or exceeding this score will receive an offer. (NOTE: this cutoff score may be higher than the cutoff score for the Information Session.) If you are enrolled in an IB school s Middle Years Programme partner school or Academic Center, and you meet the minimum application requirements and attend the school s Information Session, you will be automatically admitted to that school. If you live in a school s attendance area or overlay boundary, you will receive 50 additional points after attending the Information Session. Office of Access and Enrollment 50

Eligibility Requirements The Lottery Academies do not have minimum eligibility requirements. The Selective Academies require that students not be repeating eighth graders nor have been pushed from sixth grade into eighth grade. Jones requires minimum stanines of 5 in both reading comprehension and total math on 7th grade ISAT in order to be eligible. Selection Process Lottery Academies: select students through a computerized lottery, with preference given to students with minimum stanine scores of 5 in reading comprehension and total math (or stanines that equal 10, for students with an IEP or 504 Plan). Selective Academies: (Health Sciences, Law & Public Safety, Pre-Engineering, IT Cisco and IT Database Programming) select students based on points. Other High Schools These schools : (1) do not fit into one of the groups of high schools previously discussed (Selective Enrollment High Schools, Military Academies, Magnet Schools and Programs, IB High Schools, and CTE-College and Career Academies), OR (2) offer magnet, IB or CTE-CCA programs but also accept students through an open enrollment process. Some of these schools accept the Standard High School application, and some require applicants to submit a school-specific application. Online Application Process Online site: apply.cps.edu Eighth grade students will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) in their eligibility letter. The PIN can be used for applications for all children in the family. If you do not have computer access, you can contact your school for access and assistance in utilizing the online application site. Schedule your appointments (test, information sessions, audition) based on the programs to which you plan to apply. After you schedule your appointments, you will receive a Confirmation Page. Print this page and keep it in a safe place; you will need to take the Confirmation Page with you to your appointments this is your entry ticket. Submit your applications after your schedule your appointments. Print your email confirmation as proof that you submitted your applications. Office of Access and Enrollment 64
Paper Application Process Obtain paper applications from www.cpsoae.org (click Apply and Application Materials ), your school counselor, or OAE call (773) 553-2060 or email oae@cps.edu. Select choices. Have your parent sign the application and mail or hand-deliver to OAE. If your email is listed, you will receive an email confirmation. If you enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard/envelope, it will be returned to you as confirmation. If admissions screenings (i.e., admissions test, information sessions, audition) are required for the schools to which you apply, OAE will schedule your appointments and notify you by mail of the dates, times, and locations.
