Kindergarten-2nd March 2-3, 2013 Jesus and Zacchaeus Luke 19:1-9 (Pg. 1224 NIrV) Jesus love changed Zacchaeus Hang out with kids (10 minutes): Ask kids about their week. Get kids into groups and play games together. Large Group (30 minutes): Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. And don t be afraid to redirect kids who aren t! ***This is a brand new template! Check out the Small Group section to see how it s changed. Instead of Question/Activity columns, we combined all of small group into one section. Just follow the instructions in chronological order! We hope you ll find it simpler than jumping from column to column. Small Group (20-30 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, remind them to tell their parents why they got a smiley face ring! Today we re talking about change and how Jesus love changed Zacchaeus! Read Luke 19:1-10 to brush up on the story ahead of time. *If you ve got extra time at the beginning or end, play the song from the LAST slide in the Keynote. We re not singing it in large group, but it s a fun song that retells Zacchaeus story!

Goal: to retell the story and apply it to kids lives Why? One of the things this story shows is the appropriate response to Jesus love the response we should all have. Tip: Go through the objects in order. Pull them out one by one and make sure you get them back at the end! CONNECT 1. Tell me your name and one way you ve changed! (can be anything an example from large group is fine, but help kids think of new ideas, too. like how time made them grow taller, medicine made them healthy, or even Jesus love made them start treating others better, or obeying their parents, etc. like Zacchaeus!) REVIEW ACTIVITY SAY: Remember, Zacchaeus in our story changed, too! Let s see what we can remember about Zacchaeus. 2. Pull out the following items from a bag in order and ask kids what parts of the story it reminds them of: a. Ruler--He was short. b. Fake dollar bill (any amount) He stole people s money. c. Angry face image People were mean to him; nobody liked him. d. Tree Zacchaeus wanted to see Jesus, so he climbed a tree. e. Fake food Jesus went to HIS house for dinner! f. Heart Jesus LOVED Zacchaeus. g. Smiley face eraser Zacchaeus was changed by Jesus love: he started being nice to people and became a part of God s family. SAY: There are a couple more things in here, but you re going to have to wait to see them! REVIEW QUESTIONS 3. How did Zacchaeus change in today s story? (was mean to others but started showing love) 4. What made Zacchaeus change? (finding out that Jesus loved him) (MORE on following page!!)

5. How was Zacchaeus able to start being nice to people who were mean to HIM? (Zacchaeus knew Jesus loved him, even though HE had been mean) SPECULATE/APPLY 6. Why do you think finding out that Jesus loved him made Zacchaeus change? (Discuss with kids; you can suggest that Jesus loves us all so much that he even died to rescue us it s a love that is perfect and never hurts us; Zacchaeus had never experienced that before) 7. Hmm, let s see that LAST thing in our bag. (Pull out the mirror): What do you think this reminds you of? (That Jesus loves YOU, too!) 8. What s one thing you can change now that you know Jesus loves you? (try to get kids to give specific examples of changed behavior, like: a. They disobeyed their parents last week, so they will say they are sorry b. They were mean to a sibling, so they will give that sibling a hug to show love c. They didn t share with a friend, so they will let that same friend go first) 9. Oh wait! (Rummage in the bag) I have ONE more special thing in this bag! To remind you that YOU are loved by Jesus this week, I have a smiley face ring for each of you! (Pull out the smiley face rings). Wear it and remember that Jesus loves you and that you really can show love to others. Jesus love changed Zacchaeus. And it can change us! *Pray together, thanking Jesus for his love and asking him to help you each show love to others this week (try to refer to specific examples the kids have given). **If you have extra time, practice retelling the story! Be creative! Here are some ideas: Give each kid a prop, go around the circle in the order the props are listed above, retelling the story. Ask if there is one kid who can retell the story at lightning speed. Have kids compete, but remind them of salient details (Zacchaeus was changed by Jesus love!) Have kids use the props and act it out together.

1 Today, we re telling the story of Zacchaeus because we want kids to see that Jesus love changes us! Before kids come in, hide the blanket and pillow, so when you pull them out as props, they ll be surprised. And when you use them in the Intro Game, be as DRAMATIC as you can. The more overthe-top you are, the more engaged kids will be! WELCOME Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids Club! So great to see you! We ve talked about how treating Jesus as our King is even BETTER than finding an AMAZING treasure! And today, we re going to hear a story that shows us how great Jesus love can be. See, when we treat Jesus as King and know we are loved by him, we change! INTRO GAME But before we get started, let s talk about some little ways we change. Let s play a little game to help us think about what it means to change! First, pretend I am very, very cold. (Shiver, be dramatic; then grab the blanket from where it is hidden behind the stage). Well, if I put on a blanket (Say, ahhhh! and pretend to have warmed up completely.) I CHANGE! How do I feel now? (Let kids say: warm! ) That s right! How about if I m really, really hungry? (Rub your stomach) My belly hurts because I want food! (Show picture of food.) Well, then, I eat a HUGE meal! After that, I CHANGE! How do I feel now? (Let kids say: full or stuffed ) Yep, I felt hungry, but after eating I changed--and felt full! Well, what if I m tired (yawn and stretch) and I lie down for a nap (be dramatic take the blanket and pillow and lay down on the stage you can even pretend to snore!) Then I wake up! I felt tired but I CHANGE! Now how do I feel? (Let kids say: awake or not tired. ) Yes, and today we re going to hear about a guy in the Bible who changed. But a blanket or food or a nap didn t change him Jesus love did! And this change lasted FOREVER!

NOBODY LIKED ZACCHAEUS (Show picture of Zacchaeus.) So let me introduce you to Zacchaeus. Can you guys say, Zacchaeus? (Let kids respond.) Now, Zacchaeus didn t have many friends. He wasn t nice to people. He took their money! And they weren t nice to him either. Let me see your mean face (make a mean face and cross your arms). Oh, great job! You guys look pretty mean. JESUS LOVED ZACCHAEUS! Well, one day, Jesus went to Zacchaeus town. And guess what? Even though Zacchaeus wasn t a very nice person, Jesus LOVED him! And when Zacchaeus realized Jesus loved him, he CHANGED! Let s watch a video to see how Zacchaeus changed. In the beginning, Zacchaeus was mean (make mean face) to everybody. As you watch, see if you can figure out how Zacchaeus treated people after he found out Jesus LOVED him! Video: God s Story / Zacchaeus Wow, what a great story! So after Zacchaeus found out Jesus LOVED him, how did he treat people? (Let kids say: nice or he loved them or he gave them back their money, etc.) Yes, when Zacchaeus realized Jesus LOVED him, he starting loving OTHERS! ZACCHAEUS LOVED OTHERS (Show image of Jesus and Zacchaeus.) After Jesus was nice to Zacchaeus and went to his house, Zacchaeus knew what it felt like to be loved. It felt good! So he CHANGED! Instead of being mean (make a mean face), he started being nice to other people! Let me see your nice face (make a silly grin and a couple of thumbs up let kids follow suit). Wow, great job! When Jesus loved Zacchaeus, Zacchaeus started loving others! Give somebody next to you a high five because that s pretty awesome! JESUS LOVES US! Now, I want YOU guys to stand up if Jesus loves YOU. (Make sure every kids stands or is invited to stand.) That s right, Jesus loves ALL of us, just like Zacchaeus! Even if we ve been mean like Zacchaeus or if nobody else likes us, Jesus LOVES us! Let s yell as LOUD as we can Jesus loves me! Ready? 1-2-3: (Yell Jesus loves me with kids). WORSHIP Now let s sing together and thank Jesus for loving us and always being with us! Music Video: Jesus Loves Me (do hand motions while kids watch) Song: Bravery (live lyrics with hand motions) (Continued on next page)

PRAY Ask somebody to come and thank Jesus for loving all of us, no matter what we ve done. EXTRA SONG (The LAST slide in your presentation is for room leaders to play at the beginning or end of the service to retell the story. If you have extra time and want to try playing it for the kids or are in a room that doesn t allow music during small group very easily feel free to play it before the kids leave! It s called The Ballad of Zacchaeus. )
