Surface: Brush Holder Box, #62763 Misc. Supplies: DecoArt MultiPurpose Sealer #87392 Palette Paper Pad #70560 Large Sanding Pad, Fine/Medium #70796 1 Foam Brush Set of 4 #70171 Tack Cloth #70104 Gray Graphite Paper #70141 DecoArt DuraClear Varnish Matte #87395 DecoArt Drying Time Extender #83131 JoSonja White Gesso #83101 Paper Towels Boardlines - Make line with liner or chisel edge of small comb brush. Foliage - Worn out soft flat brush. Brushes: Papillon by the Artist s Club Comb, size ¼ #20152; size ½ #20153 Liner, size 0 #20146 Round, size 1 #20157 Shader, size 2 #20125; size 6 #20127; size 8 #20129; size 10 #20130; size 12 #20131 Deerfoot Stippler Set #20167 Glaze Wash, size ¾ #20102 Always use a brush that is compatible in size to the area that you are working on. Using a brush that is too small will give too many brush marks; if the brush is too large, it will be difficult to paint the fine details. Preparation: Sand the piece with a sanding pad. Wipe away the dust with a tack cloth. Seal the piece with DecoArt MultiPurpose Sealer. Sand again when dry. Basecoat the painting surface with one coat of Gesso. Sand lightly with the sanding pad. Basecoat the entire piece with Light French Blue + a touch of Driftwood. Sand lightly again. Transfer the main pattern lines using Gray Graphite Paper. 1

WORKSHEET: I have painted a worksheet for you. Refer to it often as you paint this design. Painting Instructions: Inside of the barn: Paint the dark open spaces of the barn with Lamp Black using a size 8 Shader brush. Go around the branch and raccoons. Repeat this step if necessary. Dry brush inside the barn with Driftwood using the same brush. Allow this to dry. Foliage (left corner of the barn): follow the illustration: Start out with the purple mixture. Tap with a Deerfoot brush. This is mainly to form the edges of the tree clusters. Next add Burnt Sienna, then Black Forest Green next to this. Yellow Ochre follows + a touch of Cadmium Orange with a touch of Warm White. You can put the colors into it that you want but make sure that the colors are not directly on top of each other or they will make mud. Next take a round brush and make a few individual leaves. Make sure you connect these to each other so that they are not floating in the air. To make it easier for you I decided not to add limbs or branches but the leaves should still look like they belong to one cluster of foliage. A sample is illustrated for you on the worksheet. Hay under baby Raccoon: Basecoat the hay with Burnt Sienna with a size 1 Round brush. While this is still wet, paint the highlight with strokes of Yellow Ochre on top of this. Vary the length of the individual strokes and make sure you do not cover all the Burnt Sienna up. You will lose depth if the basecoat does not show through. Raccoons: Before painting the raccoon remember to always paint animal fur in the direction it naturally grows, the same direction you would pet an animal. BLOCKING IN LIGHT AND DARK AREAS: Before painting the raccoons in solid with Lamp Black and Warm White, paint the lines of the eyes and pupils with Driftwood. This allows the lines to show up. There is a sample of this on the worksheet. Next, fill the inside and around the eyes with Lamp Black. Now, color-book in all of the raccoons including the baby. The baby and the raccoon sitting up is Lamp Black and Warm White, the one crawling on the log has shades of brown worked into it. Use a touch of Burnt Umber + Warm White and touches of Burnt Sienna here and there if desired. Follow the sample shown on the worksheet. Leave narrow spaces unpainted to indicate body sections and remember to follow the natural hair growth pattern. Paint the inside ears, 2

3 the black face, the nose and the black stripes in the tail with Lamp Black. The following areas are painted with Warm White: white mask, the muzzle, the white in the tail, the outside white trim around the ears. Add touches of browns in the second raccoon. When applying the base colors, stroke in the direction that the hairs would naturally be growing. Paint the outer edge of each ear with a slightly heavier coverage of Titanium White or Warm White using the size 2 Shader brush. Remember to put a highlight on the nose with Light French Blue. INDIVIDUAL HAIRS: Starting at the top of the head, stroke individual hairs between the ears and forehead, using Light French Blue + Warm White. For the most part, I used a liner and thinned the paint down with water. Add a few brownish hairs with Burnt Umber on the white mask (forehead). Make sure the hair strokes are not even or do not look like you can count them. Use a ¼ inch comb brush vertically for the rest of the hair and a small round brush for the tail. There are areas around the chest, back of the leg where I used heavier application of paint. Add touches of Winter Blue here and there. I have made only indications of feet, very little detail. I added touches of browns in the tail. BRANCH: Base the branch in with Traditional Burnt Umber with a size 12 Shader brush. Highlight the branch using with the following colors added with a touch of Warm White; Black Forest Green, Burnt Sienna, Lavender Mix at the very bottom. Make the knothole by leaving a dark space (Lamp Black) and painting colors around it. Barn Boards: Take a size ¾ Glaze Wash brush and put one thin coat of Drying Time Extender over the entire barn. Refer to the color photo, notice spaces, grooves, in the boards. Notice, I have placed larger grooves in the wood slots that separate the sections of brushes in the brush caddy. Make lines with the liner brush with thinned down paint and water using darker grey blue made by adding a little Lamp Black to the Light French Blue. Using the chisel edge of a comb brush add touches of Driftwood any colors that are in the background foliage. The lightest colors are in the center of the barn and the colors are Yellow Ochre + a touch of Warm White. Chisel edge these board lines with heavier paint using the comb brush up and down. Feel free to experiment with oranges, reds, yellow, sienna s, and golds anything that is in the barn. Make sure you do not make the board lines with even strokes.

Very few older barns have perfect even lines. WHISKERS: Remember to add the whiskers to the raccoons. Thin the paint to writing consistency and use a liner brusher. Practice on palette paper before placing them on the raccoon. Hold back on the brush and avoid pressing hard on the surface. This will help you get nice thin lines. Finishing: Finish with DecoArt DuraClear Varnish Matte. Racoon #1 Base log in Racoon #2 Whiskers: Thin paint to writing consistency. Chisel Colors in the with the chisel edge of a flat brush 4

Eye: Paint pattern lines. Then fill with Lamp Black around eye. Pattern at 100% 1 x 1 To ensure your pattern is at 100%, this box should measure 1 x 1 when printed. 5
