Easter Sunrise Service April 8, 2012 6:30 a.m. FOURTH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NORTH MICHIGAN AVENUE AT DELAWARE PLACE

Prelude Rigaudon André Campra arr. Robert King Easter Affirmation Leader: This is the good news the grave is empty, Christ is risen. All: Hallelujah! Leader: This is the good news the light shines in the darkness and the darkness can never put it out. All: Hallelujah! Leader: This is the good news once we were no people, now we are God s people. All: Hallelujah! Leader: Christ is our peace, the indestructible peace we now share with each other. Hymn Jesus Christ Is Risen Today Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss, Alleluia! Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save, Alleluia! Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as God s love, Alleluia! Praise our God, ye heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, Alleluia! Easter Litany of Gathering Leader: Lord God, early in the morning, when the world was young, you made life in all its beauty and terror; you gave birth to all that we know. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. 2

Leader: Early in the morning, when the world least expected it, a newborn child crying in a cradle announced that you had come among us, that you were one of us. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. Leader: Early in the morning, surrounded by respectable liars, religious leaders, anxious statesmen, and silent friends, you accepted the penalty for doing good, for being God: you shouldered and suffered the cross. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. Leader: Early in the morning, a voice in a guarded graveyard and footsteps in the dew proved that you had risen, that you had come back to those and for those who had forgotten, denied, and destroyed you. Hallowed be your name. All: Hallowed be your name. Leader: This morning, in the multicolored company of your church on earth and in heaven, we celebrate your creation, your life, your death and resurrection, your interest in us; so we pray, All: Lord, bring new life, where we are worn and tired; new love, where we have turned hard-hearted; forgiveness, where we feel hurt and where we have wounded; and the joy and freedom of your Holy Spirit, where we are prisoners of ourselves. (a brief moment of silence) Leader: To all and to each, on his community and on his friends, where regret is real, Jesus pronounces his pardon and grants us the right to begin again. Thanks be to God! People: Amen. 3

The Peace Leader: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. People: And also with you. Scripture Lessons Isaiah 25:6 9 John 20:1 18 Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Sermon Go into the Tomb Hardy H. Kim Hymn Christ Is Alive! Christ is alive! Let Christians sing. The cross stands empty to the sky. Let streets and homes with praises ring. Love, drowned in death, shall never die. Christ is alive! No longer bound to distant years in Palestine, but saving, healing, here and now, and touching every place and time. Not throned afar, remotely high, untouched, unmoved by human pains, but daily, in the midst of life, our Savior in the Godhead reigns. In every insult, rift, and war, where color, scorn, or wealth divide, Christ suffers still, yet loves the more, and lives where even hope has died. Christ is alive and comes to bring good news to this and every age, till earth and sky and ocean ring with joy, with justice, love, and praise. 4

The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper Invitation Great Thanksgiving Leader: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Prayer Leader: It is indeed right and our highest joy...... we worship and adore your glorious name, praising you forevermore: All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory; Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Leader: All glory and blessing are yours, O holy God...... praise to you, Lord Jesus: All: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory. The Lord s Prayer (unison) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. The Communion 5

Prayer after Communion (unison) We thank you, O God, that through Word and Sacrament you have given us your Son, who is the true bread from heaven and food of eternal life. So strengthen us in your service that our daily living may show our thanks and proclaim the resurrection we celebrate this day to all the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn The Day of Resurrection! The day of resurrection! Earth, tell it out abroad; the Passover of gladness, the Passover of God. From death to life eternal, from this world to the sky, our Christ hath brought us over with hymns of victory. Our hearts be pure from evil, that we may see aright the Lord in rays eternal of resurrection light; and, listening to his accents, may hear, so calm and plain, his own All hail! and, hearing, may raise the victor strain. Now let the heavens be joyful, let earth the song begin, let the round world keep triumph, and all that is therein. Let all things seen and unseen their notes of gladness blend, for Christ the Lord is risen, our joy that hath no end. Easter Litany of Sending Leader: Today and tomorrow, All: today and tomorrow, Leader: lo, I am with you always, All: when we try to do your will, Leader: I am with you always, All: when we go where we do not know, Leader: I am with you always, All: when we meet one we do not recognize, Leader: I am with you always, All: where faith ends and doubt begins, Leader: I am with you always, All: and should we forget you, 6

Leader: I am with you always, All: today and tomorrow, today and tomorrow, you are with us always to the end of the world. Amen. Benediction Postlude Canzona per sonare no. 4 Giovanni Gabrieli arr.
