Your MBA for the 21 st Century The Henley Flexible Executive MBA EFMD Nespresso
Can you seize 21 st century opportunities with 20 th century approaches? Pure factual knowledge no longer suffices in the 21 st century. Personality and business have to come together and their interplay has to be practiced in the real world. That s why the core of the Henley Flexible Executive MBA is the reflective application of current business knowledge in practice. And not just any practice but in your relevant practice, in your job. Governed by rules in a black-and-white setting: the situation in the 20 th century We at Henley Germany observe every day how our world is changing. Structures of the 20 th century that stood firmly dissolve and the challenges of today no longer can be dealt with using conventional black-and-white thinking and concepts. At the same time, the traditional concept of a compliant career is being replaced by a multitude of creative and colourful opportunities that we can seize if we know ourselves very well. We will be successful if we manage to express the individual potential contained within us. This assumes preparedness and openness for reflection. Along with the learning of new tools and concepts that help you make sense of various business situations, we encourage you to reflect on behaviours and emotions as well, in a non-prescriptive (we don t tell you what to think) and non-judgemental (we don t judge what you say) way. This allows room for individual insights in a safe environment, and helps you explore your unique and remarkable capabilities. 2
Knowing how to reflect becomes the key success factor in the 21 st century. Nespresso A multitude of creative and colourful possibilities: the situation in the 21 st century Reflection enables us to align head (thinking), heart (energy) and gut (feelings). Our research shows that people are ready to take on responsibility if alignment is achieved. This does not mean that head, heart and gut always have to agree completely everyone should learn to judge for themselves which decisions they feel comfortable with and where their comfort zone lies. We support you in recognising which factors contribute to your individual decision-making and how that translates into your interaction with others, i.e. during change processes or simply in day to day collaboration with your colleagues and team members. Reflecting by oneself is a first step, but external feedback is equally valuable if you know how to use it. That s why we at Henley Germany have developed a scientifically founded approach for reflection. In addition to current research of our faculties, practical experience from businesses as well as input from coaching and neuro-sciences have been integrated. The basis is always a nonjudgemental and non-prescriptive environment, which we help provide throughout your Henley Flexible Executive MBA journey. Using this approach, we at Henley Business School help you build the bridge from discovering your individual capabilities to putting them into professional practice and finally integrating them in the context of your organisation. We support leaders and managers in experiencing how it feels when you act from an inner alignment: content and full of energy. Reflection... makes us human beings stand out, every human being is capable of reflection with some guidance and dedication... was mostly neglected in the industrial age and hardly appears in our traditional education system... enables us to surprise ourselves and discover our true individual potential... improves business results by an average of 10 to 25 percent... is a key for suceeding in the 21 st century 3
Reflection is a core element in the Henley Flexible Executive MBA Over the course of 2,5 years with an average time investment of 12 hours/week, you learn to understand, evaluate and use currently relevant and accepted management theories, models and approaches. At the same time, you reflect on how they fit your professional environment and personal style and how you want to develop yourself as a manager. Know and understand yourself Your first day on the Henley Flexible Executive MBA will be dedicated to you. You will start reflecting on what brought you where you are now, where you want to go and how your MBA will contribute to you achieving your goals. Day one is just the start of a Personal Development journey that we hope will last way beyond the day you graduate. During the programme, supported by expert faculty and your personal tutor (a certified coach who will accompany your group on the learning journey) as well as your peers, you develop a good understanding of yourself, your values, beliefs and behaviours. You learn how to make decisions that you can execute with energy and conviction while knowing how to take others along on the journey. This will include being open with yourself and learning from failure when it happens. In essence, you will develop a reflective practice that we believe you will benefit from for the remainder of your life both professionally and in private. Know and understand the theory that fits you In the black-and-white thinking of the 20 th century, theory was often presented as the truth and the best practice. This happened in spite of many of these best practices proving to be not that good after a short period of time. In the 21 st century, theory still exists. However, we at Henley Business School firmly believe, that best practices no longer exist: who decides what is best? In what context? Are there more innovative ideas out there already? What does my own experience say? That s why we at Henley present theories, tools and approaches to you in a non-prescriptive way: you will get to know many concepts, frameworks, models and theories but you are free to choose which ones work for you, which ones make sense for your situation because you feel they add value, which ones you would like to try out and keep using in future. And if there are some you only use once and never again because they simply don t work for you - this is also a good finding: we all know that if we do things half-heartedly, we usually are not successful. 4
Develop your very own management and leadership toolbox through practice application There are nine core module areas covered in your Henley Flexible Executive MBA. Each of them includes an applied assignment, which is essentially a mini project in your own business environment that you summarize and reflect on in writing. After nine modules and one larger final project, you will have gotten to know yourself well through reflection and have developed your very own and unique management and leadership toolbox that you can build on in future. Also, you will have discovered your organisation thoroughly and become more visible by creating direct value for different areas and departments. What we mean by Management : the actions, processes and procedures involved in steering a company and its employees. What we mean by Leadership : a combination of personality and behaviour of an individual that inspires others to follow him/her and actively support their ideas The practice project as central element of reflection: over the course of 30 months the programme is linked ten times to the organisation through applied practice projects. We give managers and leaders the necessary space to become aware of their always existing capabilities. Why? Because we know that these capabilities will be decisive in leading an organisation successfully in the 21 st century. Felix Müller Managing Director, Henley Business School Germany 5
