Candidates must indicate in the application: a) the family name and the name; the place and date of birth, the nationality; b) that they hold the academic degree specified in art. 4, with indication of the degree program, of the University or Academic Institution that has granted it, of the graduation date and of the grade, whether applicable (candidates specified in art.4, comma 2, must indicate in their application, the graduation date, the type of degree and the University or Academic Institution that will grant it); c) whether they intend to benefit from the funding specified in art. 10; d) the domicile or the address to which communications related to the competition should be sent, with the commitment of informing the School of any change in residence;

The application must be accompanied by: a) the academic record with the full list of courses and grades; b) a complete curriculum vitae, covering scientific training, professional experiences, publications and all other information that might help in the evaluation of the candidate; c) the graduation thesis whenever required in the education system of origin and other publications (works written in languages other than Italian, English, or French must be accompanied by a summary in one of the above languages); d) two recommendation letters offering a comparative evaluation of the learning achievements, research potential, maturity, and professional inclinations of the candidate and assessing whether the knowledge of the English language by the candidate is adequate to attend a post-graduate course. Candidates that obtain less than 70/100 in the evaluation of titles will be excluded from the general ranking in merit. 2. The Evaluating Commission preliminarily establishes the criteria to partition the maximal scores to attribute to the different categories of titles and then examines the applications and on the basis of the grades reported for the degree and in the single exams, the time needed to obtain the degree, the title, the curriculum, the research project and any

other enclosed information, evaluates the research and professional potential of the candidates, relating it to the availability of adequate resources for research supervision in the areas proposed by the candidates themselves. In case it is not possible to infer the grades obtained in the degree and/or in the single exams, the Commission will make use of the principle of corresponding qualitative evaluation. 3. For those candidates who have not yet obtained their degree on the deadline of the announcement, the Commission will consider, as an alternative to the non available degree grade, the mean of passed exams. 4. For those candidates that compete for admission to the Second Year, the Commission will evaluate, in addition to the criteria in point 1, also the relevance of the academic training already completed and of the research project presented, to the research areas of interest to the Program. 5. The general ranking in merit will be posted in the 'Albo' (Official Board) of the School after winners are appointed and will also be available on the School web site no later than 7th July 2003. 9. The ranking mentioned in the previous comma will contain explicit indication of those candidates included in the list with reservation under comma 2 of art. 4. In that case, they must, under penalty of loss of the same list, communicate to the School the specified information, before the mandatory deadline of 31st July 2003. 10. The research activity of each student is supervised by a Committee including the main supervisor- composed of both internal and associated faculty. 5. At the end of the research activity the students have to pass a final exam to obtain the 'Diploma di perfezionamento', in all respects equivalent to the 'Dottorato di Ricerca', in English Ph.D. (Philosophy Doctor). The exam consists in the discussion of a written dissertation presenting the results of an original and scientifically relevant research project, adequate in standard to publication on the best international journals in the field. Art. 9 (Master of Philosophy M. Phil.) 1. Students that successfully complete the mandatory classes can obtain a certificate, assimilated to the foreign title M.Phil. (Master of Philosophy), under art. 6 of the Charter of the School.

The students must inform the competent organs of the School whether they are engaged in work or research activities and whether they receive an income on those activities, if the total annual remuneration exceeds Euro 10.000. 6. The Council of the Academic Class of Social Sciences, after the proposal of the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program, decides on the compatibility of the work and research activities with the full time engagement in the Doctoral Program. Moreover, in that circumstance, the Class Council, after the proposal of the Coordinator, decides on a possible redefinition of the contributions assigned to the student. Art. 11 (Stays abroad) 1. The School, thanks to national and international relations with universities, scientific institutions, research laboratories or public and private institutions, encourages the students to spend visiting periods in other institutions, even foreign ones, and to participate in Summer Schools and similar training and scientific activities, and in conferences under the valid regulations. 2. To that purpose, the students can benefit, in addition to the funding for the participation in the Program, from extra funding for stays abroad to be assigned on the ground of what regulations specify.
