THE HEART OF THE MATTER At the Bayfront Heart Center, the leading cardiac facility in the area, we are fully equipped to treat all aspects of cardiovascular disease the number one health risk in the U.S. today. From diagnosis to treatment and recovery, we are your partner when it comes to matters of the heart. The James Heart Center offers a sophisticated array of diagnostic tools to help physicians identify the presence and extent of heart disease. In the main hospital, our inpatient cardiac units offer expert care from a dedicated team of nurses and healthcare professionals. And, patients who require surgical intervention can be confident in Bayfront Heart Center s cardiac surgery program, new state-of-the-art operating suites, and private recovery rooms. To encourage faster recovery, programs like the Mended Heart support group and the hospital s cardiac rehabilitation center add valuable resources for patients and their families.
Diagnostic Services and Treatments To detect conditions quickly and accurately, the newly expanded James Heart Center offers a complete array of cardiac exams and procedures. Our scope of non-invasive cardiac diagnostic procedures includes EKG, stress testing, nuclear stress testing, holter monitoring, echocardiography, 3D echocardiography, and transesophageal echocardiography the largest diagnostic facility in our community. When a condition calls for a more invasive approach, procedures are performed in our state-of-the-art catheterization laboratories. Each of our full-service diagnostic cardiac catheterization laboratories are staffed by a specialized team of physicians and healthcare professionals. Electrophysiology studies are done in a cardiac catheterization laboratory, as well as the standard angiogram, a valuable test to evaluate the extent of heart disease. During an angiogram, also called a cardiac catheterization, physicians insert a catheter into the patient s coronary artery system under the guidance of X-ray. They can then see if the coronary vessels are narrowed which reduces blood flow and whether the heart has suffered any damage, especially after a heart attack. An angiogram is also useful to determine if surgical intervention is required. Bayfront s cath lab technology offers patients minimallyinvasive treatment options, such as the placement of drugeluting stents. The patient receives the benefits of more invasive surgery, without the associated risks. Cardiac Bayfront Heart Center Staff
Surgical Suites Bayfront Medical Centers recent surgical expansion includes 10 new operating suites outfitted with the latest technological advances. All of our new rooms, including two suites specially equipped for cardiac procedures, come standard with Stryker video integration systems, which give surgeons instant access to radiology images, lab results and patient information all at the touch of button. The 1,400 square feet of dedicated operating space for adult cardiac surgery offers our expert cardiac surgeons the ideal space for performing open heart surgery. The surgical suites are located steps away from our diagnostic facility to optimize convenience and safety. Endovascular Surgical Program Bayfront Heart Center's comprehensive endovascular surgical program treats conditions throughout the vascular tree. This cutting-edge program is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional vascular surgery. Our expert team of physicians has the ability to treat from head to toe including aneurysms in: the brain, thoracic and abdominal aortic region and lower extremities. Cardiac Intensive Care Unit Our recent surgical expansion project not only resulted in 10 state-of-the art operating suites, but a brand-new Cardiovascular Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Our CVICU, containing six completely private rooms, provides the ideal environment for patients to recover from cardiovascular surgery. All six rooms are equipped with the latest advances in patient care. The one-to-one patient-to-nurse ratio guarantees that each patient receives a caregiver s undivided attention. The unique set-up of the room, with all equipment raised from the floor, allows for flexibility of movement for the patient. Since nurses are able to take care of all documentation from the bedside monitor, the patient is
attended at all times. Visitation from family and friends is encouraged 24-hour-aday. Our patient-focused philosophy supports open visitation when it is beneficial for the patient. Cardiac Rehabilitation Bayfront s successful three-phase cardiac rehabilitation program builds confidence, improves fitness and encourages patients to pursue a healthy lifestyle. A skilled team of cardiac rehabilitation specialists offers instruction in nutrition, stress management, exercise and provides the medical guidance needed for a healthier future. Our center is complete with state-of-the-art equipment and all the tools necessary for a successful recovery. Phase I begins while the patient is still recovering in the hospital and includes education and limited exercise with clinical supervision. Phase II continues on an outpatient basis with a structured, medically-supervised program of education, guidance and support. In this stage, patients wear a cardiac monitor to track their progress. Phase III is a maintenance program that encourages long-term healthy lifestyle changes through regular fitness sessions. Bayfront also offers similar three-phase programs in vascular and pulmonary rehabilitation.
