Timeline of Events Completion of Creation and Day of Rest Satan s fall, cast down to earth Temptation of Eve and then Adam Decision of Adam subsequent consequence Quote from the book Angels of Death battle of Gettysburg "What a piece of work is man in action how like an angel!" And the old man, grinning, had scratched his head and then said stiffly, "Well, boy, if he's an angel, he's sure a murderin' angel." One of the most tragic and sad chapters in the Bible Gen. 3 Disorder, Chaos, Pain, Suffering, Tragedy, Death, Destruction, Loss Pain of every description and Evil unimaginable now part of the human story Of course with the greatest tragedy is the greatest victory o Grace wins the day I. The Temptation Satan s tactics are still the same Genesis 3:1 13 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, Indeed, has God said, You shall not eat from any tree of the garden? Satan will always question God s Word o Indeed has God said o Any tree of the garden 2 The woman said to the serpent, From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.
Eve adds to the directive from the Lord Perhaps well intentioned etc but we must be careful in adding to God s Word much less neglecting it 4 The serpent said to the woman, You surely will not die! 5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. Satan now directly contradicts the Word of God o There is still a bit of truth in that Satan had sinned and not physically died o I believe he knew this and used this info in order to twist truth Clearly spiritual death is the primary death with the physical to follow 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. Eve remains, which is not good we are told to Flee Her senses are appealed to and she makes a decision contrary to God s command she sins. Immediately she takes the fruit to Adam and he does the same Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
1 John 2:15 16 15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. Wiersbe In v. 6 (NKJV) we see the tragic operation of the lust of the flesh ( good for food ), the lust of the eyes ( pleasant to the eyes ), and the pride of life ( desirable to make one wise ) Everyone here has been, is being, and will continue to be impacted by Sin II. The Consequences The impact of sin o Broken relationship with the Lord and one another o The curses given to the serpent, Eve and Man o The impact on the universe/animal kingdom/earth Lost Fellowship Gen 3.8-13 8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, Where are you? 10 He said, I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself. 11 And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? 12 The man said, The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate. 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done? And the woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
Fear of God (in Christ perfect love casts out fear I John 2.18) Blame, never taking responsibility for one s actions A desire to justify oneself, give a valid reason for the actions What are the consequences that God imposes? Genesis 3:14 24 Serpent - The Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel. Woman - 16 To the woman He said, I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you. Pain in childbirth Desire for your husband to overtake his role Husband will rule over you with his strength Man - 17 Then to Adam He said, Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat from it ; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return. Hard work now replaces the role in Eden given to Adam as ruler
The ground was cursed and would make it hard to produce food Romans 8:18 22 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. Paradise Lost 20 Now the man called his wife s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. 24 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life. Here we see the Lord providing garments for Adam and Eve out of animals at the same time rejecting the ones they had made out of the leaves The picture is of a sacrifice where blood is shed and the garments more appropriate to the relationship with the Lord garments are a picture of salvation throughout Scripture and blood is necessary for forgiveness
This would foreshadow the shedding of the blood of Christ which is eternal, once for all The Lord also drives Adam and Eve out of the Garden placing cherubim at the entrance to keep them from returning an act of Grace as had they eaten of the tree of life they would have lived in their sinful state forever Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Ephesians 2:1 3 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. Dead in sin Eph. 2.1 Under the prince of the power of the air Eph. 2.2 Children of wrath Eph. 2.3 Living in the lusts of the flesh and the mind Eph. 2.3 Engaged in evil deeds Col. 1.21 Without Hope Eph. 2.12 III. The Salvation Message of Hope Did this catch the Lord by surprise? o Slain before the foundation of the world o The lamb blood of Christ foreknowledge of God
Immediate pronouncement of the Gospel and declaration of victory Gen 3.15 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel. Wiersbe This is the first Gospel declared in the Bible: the good news that the woman s seed (Christ) would ultimately defeat Satan and his seed. Revelation 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. With death, sorrow, broken fellowship and role God s grace still triumphs above all Romans 5:15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.
