Praying the Rosary: The Glorious Mysteries 2014

2 THE ROSARY

The Rosary The rosary is a devotion for all the children of God, young or old, learned or unlearned, in sickness or in health. To use it one must be able to picture the mysteries of our Lord s life, and know the prayers which follow. PREPARATION Start by making the sign of the Cross. + In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen On the cross at the end of the beads, say the Apostles Creed as an act of faith. APOSTLE S CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Sprit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, + the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. On the first large bead say the Lord s Prayer, thinking of the intention with which you are going to say the rosary. THE ROSARY 3

THE LORD S PRAYER Kneel Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen. On each of the three small beads say a Hail Mary asking our Lady by her intercession that we may be: 1. given the increase of faith 2. given the increase of hope 3. given the increase of charity which are the true conditions of all real prayer. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, Blessed are thou amongst women and Blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death, Amen. On the chain, say the Gloria Patri as an Act of Thanksgiving to the Blessed Trinity for the gift of Mary through whom we have been found worthy to receive the author of life. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, in now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. THE FIVE DECADES On each large bead is said the Lord s Prayer, on each small bead the Hail Mary (meditating on the mystery) and on the chain after each decade of ten small beads, the Gloria Patri. 4 THE ROSARY

THE FIRST GLORIOUS MYSTERY: THE RESURRECTION Our Father 1. Truly, Truly, I say to you, / you will weep and lament, / but the world will rejoice; / you will be sorrowful, / but your sorrow will turn into joy. (Jn 16:20) Hail Mary 2. But I will see you again, / and your hearts will rejoice, / and no one will take your joy from you. (Jn 16:22) Hail Mary 3. At the early dawn, / they went to the tomb, / taking the spices which they had prepared. (Lk 24:1) Hail Mary 4. For an angel of the Lord descended from heaven / and came and rolled back the stone, / and sat upon it. (Mt 28:2) Hail Mary 5. Do not be afraid; / for I know that you seek Jesus / who was crucified./ He is not here. (Mt 28:5-6) Hail Mary 6. For he has risen, as he said. / Come, see the place where he lay. (Lk 24:6) Hail Mary 7. He is going before you to Galilee; / there you will see him. (Mt 28:7) Hail Mary 8. And [the women] went out and fled from the tomb / with fear and great joy, / and ran to tell his disciples. (Mk 16:8; Mt 28:8) Hail Mary 9. I am the resurrection and the life; / he who believes in me, / though he die, / yet shall he live. (Jn 11:25) Hail Mary 10. And whoever lives and believes in me / shall never die. (Jn 11:26) Hail Mary Glory be to the Father ~ THE ROSARY 5

THE SECOND GLORIOUS MYSTERY: THE ASCENSION Our Father 1. Then [Jesus] led them out as far as Bethany,/ and lifting up his hands he blessed them. (Lk 24:50) Hail Mary 2. And Jesus came and said, authority in heaven and on earth / has been given to me. (Mt 28:18) Hail Mary 3. Go, therefore / and make disciples of all nations. (Mt 28:19) Hail Mary 4.... baptizing them in the name of the Father / and of the Son / and of the Holy Spirit. (Mt 28:19) Hail Mary 5.... teaching them to observe/ all that I have commanded you. (Mt 28:20) Hail Mary 6. He who believes and is baptized / will be saved. (Mk 16:16) Hail Mary 7. But he who does not believe will be condemned. (Mk 16:16) Hail Mary 8. And behold, / I am with you always, / to the close of the age. (Mt 28:20) Hail Mary 9. And when he had said this, / as they were looking on, / he was lifted up, / and a cloud took him out of their sight. (Acts 1:9) Hail Mary 10. So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, / was taken up into heaven, / and sat down at the right hand of God. (Mk 16:19) Hail Mary Glory be to the Father ~ 6 THE ROSARY

THE THIRD GLORIOUS MYSTERY: THE DECENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Our Father 1. When the day of Pentecost day had come, / they were all together in one place. (Acts 2:1) Hail Mary 2. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, / and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (Acts 2:2) Hail Mary 3. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, / distributed and resting on each one of them. (Acts 2:3) Hail Mary 4. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit,/ and began to tell the mighty works of God. (Acts 2:4, 11) Hail Mary 5. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, / devout men from every nation under heaven. (Acts 2:5) Hail Mary 6. But Peter, / standing with the Eleven, / lifted up his voice and addressed them. (Acts 2:14) Hail Mary 7. And Peter said to them, / Repent, and be baptized every one of you / in the name of Jesus Christ / for the forgiveness of your sins; / and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38) Hail Mary 8. So those who received his word were baptized, / and there were added that day about three thousand souls. (Acts 2:41) Hail Mary 9. end forth your Spirit, and they shall be created;/ and you shall renew the face of the earth. (Pentecost eluia) Hail Mary 10. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful;/ and kindle in them the fire of your love. (Pentecost eluia) Hail Mary Glory be to the Father ~ THE ROSARY 7

THE FOURTH GLORIOUS MYSTERY: THE ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY INTO HEAVEN Our Father 1. My beloved speaks and says to me: / Arise, my love, / my dove, my fair one, / and come away. (Songs 2:10) Hail Mary 2. For behold, the winter is past, / the rain is over and gone. (Songs 2:11) Hail Mary 3. Let me see your face, / let me hear your voice, / for your voice is sweet, / and your face is comely. (Songs 2:14) Hail Mary 4. Then God s temple in heaven was opened, / and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple; / and there were flashes of lightning, / loud noises, peals of thunder, / an earthquake, and heavy hail. (Rev 11:19) Hail Mary 5. And a great sign appeared in heaven, / a woman clothed with the sun. (Rev 12:1) Hail Mary 6... with the moon under her feet, / and on her head a crown of twelve stars. (Rev 12:1) Hail Mary 7. The daughter of the king is decked in her chamber / with gold-woven robes; / in many -colored robes she is led to the king. (Psalm 45:13-14) Hail Mary 8. (Judith 13:19) Hail Mary 10. You are the exaltation of Jerusalem, / you are the great pride of our nation! (Judith 15:9) Hail Mary Glory be to the Father ~ 8 THE ROSARY

THE FIFTH GLORIOUS MYSTERY: THE CORONATION OF OUR LADY IN HEAVEN Our Father 1. Who is this that looks forth like the dawn, / fair as the moon, / bright as the sun? (Songs 6:10) Hail Mary 2. Like the rainbow gleaming in glorious clouds; / like roses in the days of the first fruits. (Sir. 50:7-8) Hail Mary 3. I am a rose of Sharon, / a lily of the valleys. (Songs 2:1) Hail Mary 4. My throne was in a pillar of cloud, / and for eternity I shall not cease to exist. (Sir. 24:4,9) Hail Mary 5. Come to me, you who desire me, / and eat your fill of my produce. (Sir. 24:19) Hail Mary 6. Like a terebinth I spread out my branches, / my teaching is sweeter than honey. (Sir. 24:17,20) Hail Mary 7. And now, my sons, listen to me; / happy are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise. (Prov 8:32-33) Hail Mary 8. Happy are those who keep my ways,/ watching daily at my gates. (Prov 8:32,34) Hail Mary 9. For he who finds me finds life / and obtains favor from the Lord. (Prov 8:35) Hail Mary 10. Hail, Queen of mercy, protect us from the enemy,/ and receive us at the hour of death. (Queenship of the B.V.M., Gradual) Hail Mary Glory be to the Father ~ THE ROSARY 9

CONCLUSION It is usual to add these prayers after the recitation of the rosary. Hail, Holy Queen, mother of mercy; hail our life, our sweetness and our hope, to thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the Blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let us pray. O God, who by the birth, life, death and resurrection of thy son, hast given to us the reward of eternal life, grant that as we meditate upon these mysteries, in the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise through the same, thy son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, forever and ever. Amen. Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any who fled to thee for thy protection, implored thy help, and sought thine intercession, was left unaided. Encouraged by this assurance, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my mother, to thee I come, before thee, I present myself, sinful and sorrowful. O mother of the Incarnate Word, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer them. Amen. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy upon us. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy upon us. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy upon us. 10 THE ROSARY
