Former Foster Youth Services Creating a Pathway for Academic Success Commitment to Prosperity Mission The Enriched Scholars Program is a support service committed to advocacy, providing personal growth and economic opportunity for its diverse student population through education. It is dedicated to student academic success, personal attention, and empowering our students to be successful in their educational endeavors. Values The Enriched Scholars Program values the potential to succeed and the formation of relationships. Providing assistance with academic resources, mentorship, financial needs and community resources puts the needs of former foster youth first by allowing them to pursue their educational goals. The Enriched Scholar Program is a one-stop center where students can get advice, access resources, and receive coaching on how to handle difficult situations. Most importantly, it will be a place where students are able to receive assistance from individuals who not only understand the needs of former foster youth students, but also believe in their success.

The Enriched Scholars Program provides support for the widely under-represented population of former foster youth attending Cosumnes River College. The program supports the California Community College Chancellor s Foster Youth Success Initiative (FYSI). Statics reveal that 70% of foster youth say they want to pursue some form of postsecondary education or training. Yet, only 10% actually enroll in college, compared to total U.S. college enrollment rates of 65%. Only 4% percent of former foster youth obtain any type of degree or certificate, and only about 2% earn a bachelor s degree or higher. The following are success stories from Cosumnes River College students who have beaten the odds and continue to work toward their academic goals.

Ar mone Clemmons Associate of Arts, Human Services Ar mone received an associate of arts degree in Human Services from Cosumnes River College (CRC) in spring 2010. Ar mone has been accepted to California State University, Sacramento for the fall 2011 term where he plans to complete a bachelors of arts degree in Social Work. His long-term goal is to have a career that helps other foster youth realize their dreams. His key to staying focused is keeping a positive mindset in everything that you do, stress is not what happens to us, it is our response to what happens. Ar mone says that this quote by John Quincy Adams encouraged him along the way and he wanted to share it with others, If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader. Anthony Day Associates of Arts, Film and Media Studies Anthony s ultimate goal is to become a film director, screenplay writer, voice actor, editor, and author. Anthony will receive his associates of arts degree in Film and Media Studies at the end of summer 2011 and has been accepted to California State University, Sacramento for fall 2011. Anthony said part of the key to his success has been staying focused on his goal to receive a bachelor s degree in his field of study. Anthony offered these words of encouragement for other students, No matter what, stick to your goals and don t let nothing and nobody, not even your past, get in your way of accomplishing your goals and being happy. Aujonique Dismukes Associates of Arts, Social Science Transferring to San Jose State University Aujonique will receive her associate degree in Social Science at the end of the spring 2011 semester. She has been accepted to San Jose State University for the fall 2011 term. Aujonique s long-term goal is to find a career that will allow her to help others. She has done volunteer work for both the Buena Vista Community Center and the No Youth Left Behind organization. The key to keeping her focused on accomplishing her goal is her desire to improve her life and that of her family members. Aujonique offers these words of encouragement to students, Get your general education criteria out of the way and take college seriously. Have fun, make friends, volunteer, and join a club.

Jeremy Edwards Jeremy has been accepted to transfer to California State University, Sacramento for the fall 2011 term. Jeremy s long-term goal is obtain a master s degree in History. Jeremy said that the key to staying focused on his studies were, The people in my life: Ashley Temple, Aselia Valadez (ESP Advisor), and Janet Alvarado (Financial Aid Specialist). He offered these words of encouragement, It s a marathon, not a sprint. The work isn t hard, but putting in the effort is. Sherina Hardie Associate of Arts, Social Science Transferring to University of California, Davis Sherina will receive her associate of arts degree in Social Science at the end of the summer 2011 semester. She has been accepted to the University of California, Davis for the fall 2011 term where she will major in Psychology. Sherina plans to obtain a master s degree and work as a Clinical Psychologist. The key to Sherina staying focused is, Being involved with others who have similar goals and being able to take myself away from environments and situations that may wrongfully affect my goals. I just have to stay focused. Going through the foster care system is tough and making sure I don t repeat the foster care experience to my children is very important to me. My biggest long-term goal is to become a hard-working, independent woman and the best mother and role model for my kids in the future. Sherina offers these words of encouragement to other students, The big secret in life is that there is not a big secret, whatever your goal is, you can get there if you are willing to do the work. Julie Her Julie has been accepted to California State University Sacramento for the fall 2011 term. Julie currently works in the computer lab at Cosumnes River College (CRC) where she has been employed during most of her time attending college. Her long-term goal is to obtain a bachelor s degree in Biological Science. She resides locally in Sacramento, where it is close to her family. The personal motivation that keeps Julie focused on her goals is the desire to create a better life for her family and her need to be out of poverty. Julie s words of encouragement to other students are, The journey we all travel in education may seem long and endless, but it s worthwhile when you know you are moving forward with it, not only that, but it will all pay off at the end, and even if the end is nowhere close by, it does exist.

Jessica Nguyen Associate of Arts, Social Science Jessica earned her associate of arts degree in Social Science from Cosumnes River College (CRC) in fall 2010. She has been accepted to California State University, Sacramento for the fall 2011 term, where she plans to study Behavior Science. Jessica is the full-time mom of two beautiful children. Her long term goal is to make a difference in the foster care system and support at-risk youth. Jessica said the key to keeping her focused on accomplishing her goals is, When school becomes overwhelming, I remember that I was once homeless and living on the streets. I think of all the kids out there right now who are homeless, hungry and being abused, and are just straight up alone in this world. And then I tell myself, without an education you can t help, without an education you can t make a difference. Jessica s words of encouragement to students, When you feel like giving up, remember why you held on for so long in the first place. HEATHER ROSE Heather has been accepted to California State University Sacramento for the fall 2011 term. Heather s long-term goal is to obtain an elementary teaching credential so that she can teach second grade. The key to staying motivated in accomplishing her goals is, Staying focused and never giving up, accepting the challenges placed in front of me and having the determination to overcome any obstacles. Heather said this quote provided words of encouragement for her and hoped it would do the same for other students, The man who makes a success of an important venture never wails for the crowd. He strikes out for himself. It takes nerve, it takes a great lot of grit; but the man that succeeds has both. Anyone can fail. The public admires the man who has enough confidence in himself to take a chance. These chances are the main things after all. The man who tries to succeed must expect to be criticized. Nothing important was ever done but the greater number consulted previously doubted the possibility. Success is the accomplishment of that which most people think can t be done C. V. White. THUY TRUONG Transferred to California State University, Sacramento Thuy was admitted to California State University, Sacramento in spring 2011 and is working toward a bachelor of arts degree in Psychology. Thuy s long-term goal is to attend graduate school and earn her master s degree in Psychology. She plans to work with kids and young teens as a guidance counselor. Thuy s comment is, I want to make a difference in providing the correct type of counseling because I never got the right counseling when I was younger. When asked what the key was to staying focused on her goals Thuy replied, I watched my entire family struggle through life and I want to make a change for my younger siblings; I want them to attend college. They have motivated me and kept me focused on accomplishing my goals. I am never giving up until I reach my goal. Thuy s words of encouragement are, If someone tells you that you can t, show them you can! Set a big goal and achieve it.
