Cost-effective Technology for a Competitive Advantage Unlike most other professional audio applications, the challenge of cinema sound system design comes not from the acoustics of the exhibition space but from the program material itself: digitally mixed and encoded soundtracks. Today s soundtracks have a wider dynamic range, require higher fidelity, and their multiple-channel digital mixes require three different types of loudspeakers each optimized to its particular application. Main channel stage/screen loudspeakers must reproduce dialog, full range music and sound effects with equal power and clarity. Where surround channel loudspeakers once played only an ambient role, today they are asked to reproduce nearly as much information as the main channels. And subwoofers are pushed to the limits of human hearing with thunderous sound effects at sometimes earth-shaking volume levels. With Digital Cinema, the future requirements of the entire cinema sound system may be totally re-defined. Finally, all of these loudspeakers must be contained in cost effective systems capable of performing at or near peak output for 12 hours a day or more. Seven days a week. For years and years. In response to these demands, EAW has focused its total system engineering approach on the problems of cinema sound and has become a major supplier of cinema loudspeaker systems. By studying how a loudspeaker will be used, EAW Engineering has created a comprehensive line of cinema loudspeakers that are easy to install and use, offering cinema exhibitors cost-effective technology for a competitive advantage. 1804 / 06.00

CINEMA S YSTEMS THREE-WAY SCREEN SYSTEMS C S C 9 2 3 X The CSC923 full-range screen channel loudspeaker system brings 3-way design to the largest cinema exhibition spaces. This system provides extremely high output and must be powered by a minimum of three amplifier channels (triamplification). The CSC923 has been approved by the THX division of Lucasfilm, Ltd., for use in THXcertified theaters. The four component system includes 4x 15-in woofers in a push/pull configuration, one horn-loaded 10-in mid frequency cone and a horn-loaded 2-in exit high frequency compression driver. The CSC923 combines many of EAW s breakthrough technologies including a unique asymmetrical design mid/bass horn with EAW s patented VA 4 phase plug, push/pull low frequency technology and an asymmetrical high frequency horn. The push/pull configuration of the LF section reduces mechanically induced distortion at high output levels. To move air forward (away from the enclosure) half of the woofers push while the other half pull. The CSC923 s MF horn with VA 4 phase plug drastically reduces the horn-throat cancellation distortion that degrades the naturalness and intelligibility of dialog. By dividing the mid/high material between two horn-loaded subsystems, pattern control over the entire frequency range is enhanced. The HF element features a 2-in exit compression driver loaded with a two-dimensional asymmetric HF horn ensuring even distribution of HF information throughout the auditorium. The CSC923X contains an internal passive MF/HF crossover allowing for biamplified operation. C S C 7 2 3 The CSC723 full-range screen channel loudspeaker system is a scaled-down version of the CSC923 for large cinema exhibition spaces. This system provides high output and must be powered by three amplifier channels (triamplification). The three component system includes 2x 15-in woofers in a push/pull configuration, one horn-loaded 10-in mid frequency cone and a horn-loaded 2-in exit high frequency compression driver. The CSC723 combines many of EAW s breakthrough technologies including a unique asymmetrical design mid/bass horn with EAW s patented VA 4 phase plug, push/pull low frequency technology and an asymmetrical high frequency horn. The push/pull configuration of the LF section reduces mechanically induced distortion at high output levels. CINEMA SYSTEMS THREE-WAY SCREEN SYSTEMS C B 5 2 3 M The CB523M full-range screen channel loudspeaker system offers medium-sized theaters cost-effective access to the benefits of 3-way loudspeaker design. This triamplified system has been approved by the THX division of Lucasfilm, Ltd., for use in THX-certified theaters. The two component system includes a BV253C dual 15-in low frequency enclosure and an HK523M mid/high section. The low frequency enclosure uses optimally tuned enclosure venting to increase LF response while limiting driver excursion. The enclosure s shallow dimension allows convenient placement behind the screen. The HK523M mid/high section features a horn-loaded 10-in cone and a high power 1.4-in exit compression driver loaded with a 90 x 45 coverage pattern constant directivity horn. X The CB523MX features a biamplified powering option. Using a passive mid/high design lets it replace existing biamped two-way systems without requiring new electronic crossovers or amplifiers (electronic crossovers may require adjustment). C B 4 2 3 M X The CB423M offers small- to medium-sized theaters the same high output mid/high performance as the CB523M, but with a single 15-in low frequency section. This triamplified system has been approved by the THX division of Lucasfilm, Ltd., for use in THX-certified theaters. The CB423MX features a biamplified powering option. Using a passive mid/high design lets it replace existing biamped two-way systems without requiring new electronic crossovers or amplifiers (electronic crossovers may require adjustment). C B 1 5 3 The CB153 full-range screen channel loudspeaker system offers small theaters cost-effective access to the benefits of 3-way loudspeaker design. Its passive mid/high biamplified design lets it replace existing biamped two-way systems without requiring new electronic crossovers or amplifiers (electronic crossovers settings may need to be adjusted). The two component system consists of a BV154C low frequency enclosure and an HK153 passive mid/high system. The HK153 features an 8-in MF cone transducer and a 1-in exit high frequency compression driver loaded with EAW s patented WGP waveguide. The BV154C s optimally vented enclosure uses the enclosure s resonance to increase LF response while limiting driver excursion. Its asymmetrical enclosure design smooths response in the LF component s upper register and minimizes the potential for standing waves inside the enclosure. Left and right side enclosures can be placed flush to a back wall while still directing their output to the audience area. The enclosure can be inverted to provide a right or left-handed angle. X The CB153X is a full range passive version of the CB153. It features an internal passive LF/MF crossover/filter network allowing the entire system to be powered from a single amplifier channel with no external electronic crossover. 3

CINEMA SYSTEMS SURROUNDS C R 8 2 The CR82 two-way, passive, full range cinema surround loudspeaker system the highest sensitivity surround loudspeaker on the market has been approved for use in THX -certified theaters. The CR82 produces 8 15 db more output than traditional surrounds. Its unique coaxial design provides ultimate time alignment between the high and low frequency sections for enhanced fidelity throughout the audible range. Its 12 Ohm impedance lets system designers safely "daisy-chain" several surrounds off a single amplifier channel. The CR82 is specifically engineered to cover a larger seating area with higher quality, higher output sound than traditional cinema surrounds. With 250 Watts AES standard power handling and a 90 conical coverage pattern, it can be mounted higher and cover more seats than traditional surrounds. Higher placement lets the systems cover a larger area across the room creating a larger area of stereo surround coverage than traditional surround placement. The front baffle is angled down 15 to accommodate overhead mounting. Four threaded mounting points on the rear accept several industry standard wall brackets. The passive crossover/filter network included in the CR82 is so complex that it goes beyond merely dividing the signal and actually performs critical equalization functions. This means it will provide more detailed, more natural reproduction of any sonic event occurring in the 360 aural arena. C R 5 8 The CR58 two-way, passive, full range cinema surround loudspeaker system is engineered to reproduce today s stereo full bandwidth digital surround tracks. It features a 15-in woofer and a 1-in exit compression driver loaded with a wide dispersion constant directivity horn. The CR58 is specifically engineered to cover a larger seating area with higher quality, higher output sound than traditional cinema surrounds. With 500 Watts AES standard power handling and a 90 x 70 coverage pattern, it can be mounted higher and cover more seats than traditional surrounds. Higher placement lets the systems cover a larger area across the room creating a larger area of stereo surround coverage than traditional surround placement. The system produces 8 15 db more output than traditional surrounds. The front baffle is angled down 20 to accommodate overhead mounting. The passive crossover/filter network included in the CR58 is so complex that it goes beyond merely dividing the signal and actually performs critical equalization functions. This means it will provide more detailed, more natural reproduction of any sonic event occurring in the 360 aural arena. 10

This system is approved by the THX division of Lucasfilm, Ltd., for use in THX-certified theaters. With 150 Watts AES standard power handling and a 110 conical coverage pattern, the CR72 provides a seamless ambient surround field throughout the seating area. The WGP s extra wide dispersion pattern lets CR72 s be used in cinemas with low ceilings without sacrificing coverage of fringe seats. Four threaded mounting points on the rear accept several industry standard wall brackets. The passive crossover/filter network included in the CR72 goes beyond merely dividing the signal and actually performs critical equalization functions. This means it will provide more detailed, more natural reproduction of any sonic event occurring in the 360 aural arena. S U R R O U N D B R A C K E T S EAW provides cost-effective u -type wall brackets for all EAW surround speakers. These brackets provide a safe and simple method for quickly mounting EAW surround speakers to theatre walls. In addition, EAW and Allen Products Company have teamed up to allow customers to drop ship bracket components to EAW for partial mounting to the surround speakers, saving installation and labor on the job site. CINEMA SYSTEMS CX300 CLOSE COUPLED CINEMA PROCESSOR The new CX300 brings EAW s Close Coupling to cinema applications with a line of dedicated cinema Close Coupled Electronic Crossovers. The CX300 must be factoryconfigured to control a specific EAW cinema screen channel system. Rather than develop generic crossover settings that provide substandard system integration, EAW tightly aligns (Close Couples ) each crossover configuration to the specific loudspeaker it controls. These cost effective, single rack space, analog electronic crossovers are designed for use in biamplified or triamplified applications. The CX300 Close Coupled Electronic Crossover is available as a three-channel configuration, so a single device will provide crossover, equalization, and time-offset functions for a Left, Center, and Right (3-channel) cinema system. Each model comes preconfigured from the factory. This removes the burden of setting up from the end user and assures optimum system performance of every bi or triamplified EAW Cinema screen channel loudspeaker system.
